Neuralink's monkey can play Pong with its mind. Imagine what humans could do with the same technology
https://theconversation.com/neuralinks-monkey-can-play-pong-with-its-mind-imagine-what-humans-could-do-with-the-same-technology-158787
Some weeks ago, a nine-year-old macaque monkey called Pager successfully played a game of Pong with its mind.
While it may sound like science fiction, the demonstration by Elon Musk’s neurotechnology company Neuralink is an example of a brain-machine interface in action (and has been done before).
A coin-sized disc called a “Link” was implanted by a precision surgical robot into Pager’s brain, connecting thousands of micro threads from the chip to neurons responsible for controlling motion.
Pager was first shown how to play Pong in the conventional way, using a joystick. When he made a correct move, he’d receive a sip of banana smoothie. As he played, the Neuralink implant recorded the patterns of electrical activity in his brain. This identified which neurons controlled which movements.
The joystick could then be disconnected, after which Pager played the game using only his mind — doing so like a boss.
This Neuralink demo built on an earlier one from 2020, which involved Gertrude the Pig. Gertrude had the Link installed and output recorded, but no specific task was assessed

The square where George Floyd was murdered by ex-Minnesota cop Derek Chauvin now has a sign with special rules for white people.
The placard at the entrance of George Floyd Square in Minnesota calls it “a sacred space for community, public grief, and protest,” telling visitors to “honor the space as a place to connect and grieve as caring humans.”
But most of the instructions are listed under five orders “for white people in particular.”
“Decenter yourself and come to listen, learn, mourn, and witness,” the first bullet points reads, adding, “Remember you are here to support, not to be supported.”
“Be mindful of whether your volume, pace, and movements are supporting or undermining your efforts to decenter yourself,” the second orders says.

With nearly 900,000 followers, Majid Padellan (known as @mmpadellan, Brooklyn Dad Defiant, or just Brooklyn Dad) is one of Twitter's most vocal supporters of Joe Biden. It comes with some confusion, though, as the account prides itself on being a whistleblower and steadfast liberal. But during the past election cycle, Padellan received backlash from leftists for, among other things, urging Bernie Sanders to drop out of the presidential race and discrediting Tara Reade's allegations of sexual assault. Now, he's facing renewed backlash amid revelations that he accepted tens of thousands in donations from a Democratic PAC.
There are also the inevitable jokes about Brooklyn Dad getting paid to tweet comments on the Bidens' sex life and strange critiques of Phoebe Bridgers' recent SNL performance. He was also mocked for likening Dr. Jill Biden to a "mommy."
Since Biden took office, Padellan has continuously tweeted out his support for the new administration and defended the president from criticism surrounding the rollout of stimulus checks, the fact that he hasn't yet held a solo press conference, and more.
Some don't think this is at all controversial news: public figures and influencers are often paid to share certain content on social media, and Brooklyn Dad's supporters argue that his job with Really American is no different. "Am I the only one who doesn't give a shit if Brooklyn Dad (and all the others on both sides of the fence) get paid to share their opinions?" one user wrote. "Isn't that the goal of all influencers?"
However, influencers typically disclose when they're getting paid to promote a product or service. According to his website, Padellan's account was born of a "passion for sharing his thoughts and knowledge, and for truth-talking whilst rebuking nay-sayers, about the U.S. political climate and its key and corrupt figures." No matter what, exactly, Brooklyn Dad is being paid to do, critics argue that his lack of transparency calls this aim into question.
The controversy's grimmest implication, of course, relates to Brooklyn Dad's most questionable tweets: his criticisms of Reade, and his since-deleted suggestions that Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been accused of sexual harassment, might be the victim of a smear campaign.
Although Padellan often rightfully calls out Donald Trump and the GOP for their abusive policies and personal behavior, he's been criticized for failing to hold other Democrats accountable for the same things. Brooklyn Dad hasn't directly responded to the backlash, but he has retweeted several posts defending his right to be compensated for his work. Refinery29

Washington Post reporter has revealed British troops helped her and her Afghan team get to Kabul airport so they could board US evacuation flights — as the Biden administration faces mounting criticism for not allowing forces to go out and rescue stranded Americans.
Reporter Susannah George wrote about her “treacherous journey” to flee Kabul with her colleagues and their families, including eight young children, just two days after the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan.
In a follow-up interview after being evacuated, George told MSNBC: “The only reason I was able to get to the airport with my team was because there was a large British evacuation going on … and also because I was with my team. I am an American passport holder.”
“The danger of going to the airport is so incredibly high at the moment.”
Given the deadly chaos outside the airport in the days after the Taliban came to power, George said she and her team rented armored cars driven by private security in a bid to protect themselves as they plotted how they were going to get into the airport.
