In this video we'll be designing a multi functional cart on castor wheels which slides underneath a fixed desk and can be rolled out and used in different configurations.
The briefing session resulted in a cart with 3 outcomes: A compact storage unit, a desk for use with a chair and a standing desk. Spinning a disc raises and lowers the height of the table surface and two table leafs can be folded up to increase the table height.

Making a counter from start to finish for the Bundoora Homestead Arts Centre's cafe.
The counter was made from plywood and has decorative vertical timber battens that reference the decorative archways located within the space.
I started out by visiting the site and using my iPhone 14 Pro to scan the space and create a 3d model. Once the design was approved I ordered plywood cut to size, and assembled the cabinet with screws. American ash was ripped in to strips and attached to the outside of the counter.
The counter has a couple of neat features like kick plates that are held in place with magnets, a sliding access panel for cable management, and spare shelf pin storage.
Tools used in this video include Festool Vac-Sys, Festool OFK700 trim router, Festool DF500 domino, Mafell MT55cc track saw, Metabo TS 254M table saw and Makita 12v drill / drivers.

In this video I show the process of putting together a custom fitted bar and shelving unit for a new record bar in Brunswick. The space is made up of a front room which is the bar area and a retail space in the back. During the initial site visit I noticed that there was a non load-bearing wall partition at the back of the space so we decided to open up the wall to allow for a visual connection between the two spaces.
The cabinets are made from black filmface birch with exposed layered edges. The back wall is made up of stacked boxes with 50mm or 2-inch gaps which were covered in old vinyl records that I cut up in to small strips.
Rob is still working on the bar but he plans to open early next year, make sure to stop by and say hi at 666 Sydney Rd, Brunswick in Melbourne :)

Ako and James opened the popular Ima Project Cafe in Carlton back in 2018. The cafe quickly gained a reputation for serving up quality Japanese food and delicious coffee.
They recently made the decision to move to a new space and open a full-fledged restaurant. They sold the leasehold for Ima Project cafe to a local business and are now gearing up to open not one, but two new ventures at the Nightingale Village in Brunswick. They'll be opening a restaurant in one space and a pantry in the other.
I had the opportunity to build the cabinetry and do the woodwork for the original Ima Project Cafe in Carlton. And now, Ako has invited me back to help bring their new Ima Pantry in Brunswick to life.
In this video I'll be sharing the entire joinery process with you, from start to finish. Join me as we document the cabinetry process and create a beautiful, inspired space for Ima Pantry in Brunswick.

My friend Adam Markowitz is a furniture maker and architect. We shared a workshop for over 5 years but now he is heading out into a new space.
The workshop is in a great location near Northcote and is full of natural light. This is a big improvement over the previous space which was underground with no natural light. The space is much bigger too with high ceilings and some great woodworking machines lined up.
Adam wanted a hand with building cabinets and removing a wall partition so I offered to help.
We stated out by ripping 4 x 8 plywood sheets down to size then cross cutting to the final dimensions. Whilst Adam assembled the cabinets I did some demolition work and then made a couple of plinths for the cabinets.
The wall panels were removed, studs cut to accept a lintel and the lintel installed. The studs and bottom plate were cut out and the opening was looking good.
We placed Adam's cabinets on top of the plinths and screwed them in place.
Finally we installed some upper cabinets and the job was complete!

I made curtain hanging brackets by using masking tape to hold the two pieces of wood together then cut the slot with the festool domino as usual. Remove the tape and you get two half-slots, perfect for this application!

Take 2 of casting Jesmonite shelves, original video can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/NH6uX0thsVc
Whilst the first method worked okay, I struggled with getting a consistent thickness, and some of the shelves had problems with de-lamination between the two layers of Jesmonite as well as warping (cupping) in the finished shelves.
To address these issues I went with a plywood core instead of MDF, 18mm thick core instead of 9mm, One single pour instead of two, and the use of temporary cauls to hold the core flat during the casting process.
Also worth mentioning - whilst I didn't get a shot of this, a grid of grooves (approx. 3mm depth) were cut in to the shelf cores on the table saw to allow the Jesmonite more surface area to 'bite' in to.
This resulted in consistent thickness shelves, minimal movement and a much better outcome overall :)

In this episode I install the timber lining panels. We decided to go with plantation grown and FSC certified Radiata Pine timber panels as they came in dimensions that we were after and were a cost effective solution. In addition we like the look of white-washed pine. Rabbets were cut in the pine boards with a handheld router using a 1/2" or 12.7mm router bit and taking multiple passes. Aluminium french cleats were cut to size and attached to the back of the panelling.
To install, the panel is offered up to the wall and lowered on to the wall mounted cleat. There were some tricky bits including the panel located under the switchboard which needs to be shifted bit by bit from the side until it arrives at its final position. Another issue encountered was one panel which was only 280mm wide as opposed to the 285mm that the rest of the boards were. This panel was replaced with another. And finally one board had some edge damage during transit so this was fixed by taking 4mm off the edge.
