The Forth Road Bridge is an iconic landmark in Scotland, located near the city of Edinburgh. It spans the Firth of Forth, a large estuary that separates the Scottish counties of Fife and Edinburgh. The bridge is a vital transportation link, connecting the two regions and providing a crucial route for vehicles to cross the estuary.
Construction of the Forth Road Bridge began in 1958, and it was officially opened on September 4, 1964. The bridge was designed by Sir William Arrol & Co., and it was a significant engineering achievement of its time. The total length of the bridge is approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles), and at its highest point, it stands about 156 meters (512 feet) above the water, allowing tall ships to pass underneath.
At the time of its opening, the Forth Road Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world outside of the United States. It became an essential part of the road network in Scotland, providing a direct and convenient route for traffic between Edinburgh and Fife, replacing the older and more limited ferry services that were used before its construction.
The Forth Road Bridge played a crucial role in the economic development of both Edinburgh and Fife, enabling faster and more efficient transport of goods and people between the two areas. In this video I’ll show you around the Croatian town of Sukošan and show you what we saw when we visited.
The town is located around 10 kilometres south of Zadar main bus station. Liburnija’s bus route 140 takes around 30 minutes and runs regular services during week days, but less often at the weekend. You arrive on the busy main road through Sukošan, called the Adriatic Highway which continues all the way to Split. There’s a Tisak beside the bus stop on the southbound side, and there’s a bakery, supermarket and other shops near the bus stop on the northbound side.
We also saw this interesting, crumbing monument but we weren’t quite sure what it was for. Anyway let’s head into the old town, away from the busy road.
You’ll soon pass this unmissable bright yellow private hospital building, and right next door a Konzum supermarket. But if you continue on this road you’ll reach the heart of Sukošan, the main square.
The most significant building here is the Church of Our Lady of Mercy
Which was built in 1650 during the Siege of Candida. It features interesting pre-Romanesque door posts that date further back to the 9th and 10th century. So, an early form of recycling! The church faces onto The Upper Gate. This is the only remaining part of the old city walls that were built by the Venetian authorities between 1468 and 1470. Passing through it you can lose yourself in a maze of narrow streets of old Sukošan.
Eventually though you’ll end up at the Church of St Cassian a beautiful stone church and bell tower with Romanesque and baroque details thought to have been built in 1642. Let’s continue on down to the waterfront. Here you’ll spot Sukošan’s most famous tourist attraction, the ruins of the Palac Archdiocesan Mansion. It was built on this man made island in the 15th century to serve as a summer retreat for the Zadar church dignitaries. Perhaps poor building standards, or just the ravages of time, have left it in the ruins you see today, which you can swim or kayak to from the shore for a closer look. Also here at the waterfront you’ll find this statue of the locally famous donkey called Viola. Every year a comical donkey race is run in honour of Viola right here at the sea front. This is a great place to relax and enjoy local food and drink and you can also find the modest Sukošan sign here on the quayside affording you a memorable photo of your visit. I’ll leave you now to enjoy some more views of Sukošan and its lovely coastline.

See the city in style in these old vintage trams! Lisbon is famous for its little yellow tram cars winding their way through narrow streets.
In this video you'll see a number of these trams, and the red tourist tour trams too. You'll also see a little footage of what it's like on board as it rattles along the tight twisty streets that Lisbon is famous for.
For tickets, the best way I found was to buy a 24hr ticket at any Metro station (6.50 Euro at time of my visit in Jan 2023) as this allows unlimited travel on all buses and trams within Lisbon, including the iconic E28 route. This allows you to hop on and off as you wish.
