Today we are going to look at how stimulant medications actually work, things to consider when stopping or starting stimulant medications, and how too much screen usage is actually linked to symptoms of ADHD in children and teens. The number of kids being diagnosed with some form of attention issue is growing every year. I believe that parents have the right to make decisions for their kids, but I believe that those decisions need to be informed by research and facts that many parents are not aware of. It is your job as a parent to research and learn so that you can make the best decisions for your child. My hope is that this podcast will be a helpful and encouraging starting point for you.
Today I’m interviewing another colleague of mine from Brain and Body Rehabilitation Specialists (BBRS). This week’s episode features occupational therapist Kendra Noel. Kendra always wanted to work in healthcare and her passion for seeing patients reach their maximum potential is evident. Early on in her career, Kendra realized the limitations of a traditional healthcare system and felt frustrated with seeing patients max out without reaching their fullest recovery. When healthcare providers just focus on their own piece of the puzzle and don’t take time to collaborate with others and view the patient’s whole body and brain, patients just aren’t getting better and their treatment is disjointed and ineffective. Kendra’s goal in working at BBRS is to help patients continue to get better and better and not just maintain their initial progress.

The human gut takes approximately two years to fully mature and the human immune system takes about three years. That means the foods and germs a child is exposed to in their first few years of life will have a strong impact on your child’s overall health and development.
It is essential that we take a look at what your are feeding your children. As parents and caregivers, your need to be hyper-aware of the ingredients used in foods and the effect of these ingredients on your children. Each ingredient a child consumes will either support or oppose their gut health and immune system.
Additionally, the way we serve and prepare food also matters. Heating up leftovers in the microwave or drinking water out of a plastic bottle can actually be damaging to your child’s health. The way we eat absolutely contributes to the way our brains develop.

Food is probably the biggest struggle for people, especially parents with children that have struggles, and nutrition can become incredibly complicated and overwhelming. Here in my practice I have a 3-tiered approach of Mechanical, Chemical, Brain. So when we talk about nutrition, it’s going to be about the chemical piece – the part that runs you and I as human beings. In today’s Nutrition 101 episode, we explore three questions on nutrition: Why should I focus on Nutrition? Why is it so difficult? And why does it demand such an aggressive approach in order to make a change? I discuss where your food comes from, oral health, gut health, and how to start your journey to a healthier lifestyle through your nutrition.

ADHD is a condition has become more and more common and unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation out there about it. My goal in these two episodes is to really give you an overview of what ADHD actually is, the history surrounding it, and what the medications used to treat it are doing to a person’s brain.
I recently listened to a podcast focused on medications for kids with ADHD and how these medications were generally okay for kids to take. However, when kids are taking this type of medication during open windows of development, this will impact their cardiovascular, digestive, and immune systems, as well as their brains!
In part one we dive into the history of the ADHD diagnosis – when it first came to attention, how it’s classified, and how the perception of it has changed. We’ll also take a look at ritalin, one of the most common ADHD medications out there, and some of the incredibly dangerous effects of ritalin withdrawal.
If you or your child are being treated for ADD or ADHD, please take the time to listen to this podcast. Education is power and in order to really make the best decisions about your care it is essential that you understand how the medical system is designed to work and what some of the issues are with how ADD and ADHD are handled today.

In this episode I talk about paying attention to developmental milestones and what these milestones can tell us about our kids. I also dive into the use of screen time, the way it physically changes kids’ brains, and how those changes affect our kids in the long term. I also talk about movement patterns and why things like learning to crawl and learning to walk are not just physical milestones – they’re also important for a healthy brain – and if your child is doing these things atypically, it can actually lead to faulty wiring in their brains. But don’t worry – the earlier we catch these things, the easier they are to fix.

Neurofeedback is not just about fixing problems or dysregulations but can also be used to help an individual reach optimal performance.
The way we spend our time and the things we think about have a strong influence on the patterns in our brains. Anxiety and stress are normal human emotions but are not meant to run our lives. We should be able to feel stressed or anxious and then shut that feeling off when the threat or stressor has passed. In a chronic stress situation, these responses are never shutting off and cause long-term damage to our brains and bodies. You can do a few things to change these patterns, but I think neurofeedback is one of the most incredible tools out there. If you can see what’s going on in your brain then you can change it. With neurofeedback, we can literally train our brains!

We are born fully formed but not fully functioning. In the first weeks, months, and years of life, there are tons of events happening in our bodies and brains as we grow and develop. These events are all interconnected and a lack of timely and proper development in one area of our bodies can have a significant impact on development in other areas. The good news is, that we can actually identify where interruptions have occurred and move forward, allowing children to get their childhood back.

Today’s episode is the last one in our case study series. My hope is that this series has helped you see places in your own child’s life where a behaviour might actually be caused by a brain that didn’t get wired up correctly because the good news is that you can retrain a brain! I want parents to know that there are people like me who really focus on development and help children (and adults!) navigate the path to get things back on track!
Today I will be focusing specifically on chronic stress and the stress-response evaluation. I started using this evaluation in 2008 as a way to quantify stress in an individual and see how the system is actually working. In this episode I go through the stress-response evaluation in detail, explaining how it works and what it can tell me and I talk about how chronic stress literally changes the brain.

In today’s episode we’re going to take a look at the clinical case of a child I worked with who came in to my clinic experiencing high levels of stress and overwhelm. There are many children that have very heightened emotional reactions, but how do we navigate this? Children don’t have a point of reference to tell us if something is wrong, so if you are concerned it’s always a good idea to get an evaluation. In the case of this child, at first glance it seemed like he was developing as expected, but on a closer look, it became clear to me that he had a retained Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR). The ATNR is such a far-reaching reflex and it was no wonder this child was experiencing so many emotional difficulties. This wasn’t a kid having behaviour issues, this was a child demonstrating something faulty was going on. The good news is that the earlier we can recognize this in a child, the earlier we can change it!
