13.-Pixies---Brick-Is-Red
***”Pixies”*** are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986 in **Boston, Massachusetts**. Until 2013, the band comprised ***[Black Francis](https://cutt.ly/xng3x37)*** (vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter), ***[Joey Santiago](https://cutt.ly/Jng3zxi)*** (lead guitar), ***[Kim Deal](https://cutt.ly/nng3b1L)*** (bass, backing vocals) and ***[David Lovering](https://cutt.ly/hng3Wy6)*** (drums).
The band disbanded acrimoniously in 1993, but reunited in 2004. After Deal left in 2013, Pixies hired ***[Kim Shattuck](https://cutt.ly/Qng3OIr)*** as a touring bassist; she was replaced the same year by ***[Paz Lenchantin](https://cutt.ly/6ng3SPH)***, who became a permanent member in 2016.
Combining jagged, roaring guitars and stop-start dynamics with melodic pop hooks, intertwining male-female harmonies, and evocative, cryptic lyrics, ***"Pixies"*** are one of alternative rock's most influential bands.
They turned conventions inside-out, melding punk and indie guitar rock, classic pop, surf rock, and stadium-sized riffs with bizarre, fragmented lyrics about space, religion, sex, mutilation, and pop culture. No matter how much lyrics may have been impenetrable, the music was direct, forceful, and laid the groundwork for the alternative explosion of the early '90s.
In the days where the pop charts were ruled by bad metal and horrible synth pop, with their first album, ***”Surfers Rosa”, ***"Pixies"*** showed something different to the world. They gave originality and heart where others just copied and imitated.
For each blazing piece of punk, there are softer, poppier moments. Francis' warped sense of humor is evident in the lyrics *"He bought me a soda and tried to molest me in the parking lot/Yep yep yep!"*.
***"[Pere Ubu](https://cutt.ly/9nhg7Vq)"*** is not the only influence here, but it is the most obvious as both bands have maniacal, hefty lead singers and their debut albums shine with bizarre complex song styles.
The album is crafted well from start to finish, with moderate rockers, screaming anthems, and even some softer ballad-like songs that influenced generations to come; Kim Deal’s sole writing credit ***“[Gigantic](https://cutt.ly/xnkWYz1)”*** being a perfect example of this new kind of power "indie rock" ballad.
***”Brick Is Red”*** is thirteenth and the last song on band’s debut album ***"[Surfer Rosa](https://cutt.ly/znkmZnk)"***, released in March 1988 on the British label ***"[4AD](https://cutt.ly/dnhfevT)"***, and produced by ***[Steve Albini](https://cutt.ly/OnhfydK)***.
