Elderberries contain a variety of flavones, isoflavones, flavanols, anthocyanins, phenolic acids, lectins, and many vitamins. The active chemicals include anthocyanins. These immune-boosting compounds are antiviral, antibacterial, anti-diabetic, antitumor, antioxidant and antidepressant. The antiviral properties include activity against coronaviruses and influenza viruses. The active compounds attach to H1N1 cells and stop them from entering our cells. Elderberry juice blocks influenza and viral proteins and triggers our body's immune response. Studies have shown that elderberries decreases respiratory symptoms and decreases duration of viral infection.
