Wat Mahannapharam Worawihan or Wat Mahan, commonly called Wat Mahanop วัดมหรรณพ, is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok Thailand. The first state school for general public in Thailand was established at the temple in 1884. Wat Mahannapharam Worawihan was constructed in the reign of King Rama III by Prince Annop, a son of Rama III. The construction began in 1850 with the king donating 80,000 baht. It was only completed in the reign of King Rama IV when the new king donated another 80,000 baht. The name of the temple means "the great abode of water", referring to the Sea of Samsara, the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth. The first public school in Thailand was established at Wat Mahannapharam by the abbot of the temple after an instruction was issued by Rama V encouraging temples to set up new schools for common people in 1884. It was the beginning of mass education in Thailand. A statue of Rama V was later erected at the temple to mark the centenary of the founding of the school. The main Buddha image in the ubosot is Luang Por Bunyarit หลวงพ่อบุญฤทธิ์, sculpted during the reign of Rama III in the Ayutthaya style. The Buddha image in the wihan is Pra Ruang Thong Kam พระร่วงทองคำ, cast in the Sukhothai style. Pra Ruang is much older, dated back to Sukhothai period and made from 60 per cent gold. The temple is near Khao San Road and a good stop for anyone that enjoys seeing the temple architecture or learning a little bit of the history of the area. This is a must place to visit in Busan. The night market offers numerous types of street food. The food on offer is very delicious, affordable and worth to try. BIFF Square, known as Busan International Film Festival, is easy to access and very near the bus and metro train station. It is also within walking distance to other attractions in the city like Jagalchi Market, Busan Tower, Gukje Market and Fashion Street. The whole atmosphere of the night market is great. There are lots of people here eating street food, hanging out with their friends and enjoying the evening. In addition to street food there are regular restaurants as well as coffee shops along the narrow streets surrounding the market area. Wat Sangkatan is an old temple. It is assumed that it used to be called Wat Sarikho. It was built near the end of the Ayutthaya Era and was abandoned around the year 1700. After it was abandoned an orchard grew up around the old temple. All of the buildings collapsed leaving only one ancient cement Buddha image called "Laung Pho Toh." This is an image in a cross-legged sitting Subduing Mara posture, in the U Thong style, inside the old wooden Sala. Even with the temple being abandoned, local people and people and others would still came to pay respect to Laung Pho Toh. This made the local people have to ask monks from temples nearby to come to the temple for the Sangkatan ceremony (offering food and necessary things for monks.) Since then the people have been called this temple "Wat Sangkatan". Luang Pho Sanong Katapoonyo was the monk who restored this temple in 1968. He CD some to the conclusion that the temple site was suitable for Buddhist teaching and meditation. He came back again in 1974 and with the cooperation of novices and local people to begin renovating the "Laung Pho Tor" image in the following year. In 1993, he ordered the removal of the old Sala where Laung Pho Tor was exhibited in order to build a new Main Hall for the temple. This new main hall is made of glass and took a year and a half to build. The hall consists of two stories. The upper floor is used for ordination and an area for praying and meditation. The ground floor is a room for donation and contains the library. The temple is designed to be a forest temple with nature surrounding the entire meditation area. Monks' houses are different from ones at other temples as they are in the shape of boats. The temple also has project for women's ordination (Nekkamma). The principle ceremony of Wat Sangkatan is the offering food to monks ceremony and takes place each weekend in the morning. There are large numbers of Buddhist that join the ceremony. After the ceremony monks and people residing at the temple eat and participate in Dhamma mediation. The temple is very interesting and contains some amazing buildings.
