If you’re getting ready to defend face masks let me remind you that this is my video and I’m using it to let off some of my steam. I’m not asking you to agree with me and I don’t really care whether you do or not, but you are very welcome to use the comments below to express your views for and against the face nappies, or better still, make a video of your own. We can agree that yes, there’s a virus and yes, it can kill people. My view is that the response to this threat is all out of proportion to the actual risk and that consequently, thanks to the power we have given up to our government and their scientific advisors, we have caused far more damage to society and ourselves than would otherwise have happened with a different response. With that said, face masks, how do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways. 1. Face masks represent all that’s gone wrong in the world. They are a symbol of the pain and anguish of countless people and children during one lockdown after another; the suicidally desparate, the victims of domestic and child abuse, the dead and the dying due to late or no diagnosis, the children who’ve lost valuable education and play time, and all those with all hopes and dreams crushed by financial woes. 2. Face masks are worn by celebrities and politicians who make videos telling us to stay at home and that we’re all in this together. Well, no we’re not. You’re not a single parent with two children under 10, living in a small flat in a tower block in which the lift smells of wee and from which the route to the nearest park means you have to run the gauntlet of feral gangs of knife-wielding 14 year olds, while the mayor of city is busy forming committees tasked with decolonising statues. 3. Face masks litter our streets. They lie discarded in the gutters and on the pavements, reminding us that there are now billions of them and that consequently they’ve become a new source of dangerous pollutant to the natural world. Now, it’s not just the plastic from a six pack of beer that ends up around the neck of a cormorant or a turtle, it's a face mask as well. Thank you, homo sapiens. The term "crop circle" was coined when most of those that appeared were circles of flattened corn, wheat, barley, or some other crop. As the years passed these circles developed into complex geometric patterns and pictograms. Crop circles have appeared for tens and perhaps hundreds of years all over the world but it was the proliferation and variety in those that appeared in Southern England during recent decades that has created a huge upsurge of interest in this phenomenon. A crop circle industry has been generated. They have sparked the interest of amateur and professional researchers, the media, and the Ministry of Defence. Books, films, and lecture tours are available for anyone wanting to know more. I have included some links to useful websites in the description area below this video. Who is creating them? Well, you tell me. Personally, I don't buy the story that they are all made by hoaxers and artists. There is more to this than that. There is ample scientific evidence that suggests other forces are at work. Let's just say non human intelligences may be involved. But enough of that for now. Here are my suggestions for how to use a drone to capture images and film. First of all we have to adhere to The Law and make safety our top priority. You can't fly over the land without the land owner's permission and you can't fly higher than 400 feet. So your first task is to obtain permission to fly over the field. This may involve a certain amount of detective work either online or in the vicinity of the crop circle. Ask in the nearest shop or pub, or stop and ask anyone who looks like they live and work in the area. It shouldn't be too difficult to find out who the farmer is as he or she will probably already be alerted by the buzz of activity that the crop circle generates. The land owner may also make themselves known as they might spot the opportunity to make some money charging curious visitors a small fee for entering the field. For most people achievements like cycling around the world, rowing solo across the Atlantic ocean, or climbing Mount Everest, would be proof enough of their drive and commitment to a project and overcoming all and any obstacles in their path. But James Ketchell has done all three. James is a serial adventurer, motivational speaker and Scouting ambassador. In February 2014 he became the first and only person to have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean (in 2010), successfully summited Mount Everest (in 2011) and cycled 18,000 miles around the world in what the media dubbed “The Ultimate Triathlon”. Now he's starting his next adventure - a flight around the world in a custom built Magni M16 autogyro. Starting from the Popham Airfield in Hampshire, England, James will fly through France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and into Russia. He'll then fly across Russia from west to east. From Russian he'll cross the Bering Straits to Alaska, and travel across Canada, the USA, Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands before heading back to the UK via Scotland. The journey is expected to take about 10 months and it has taken three years of planning. Along the way, in each country he will be giving talks in schools and to youth organisations, sharing stories of fun and adventure which will no doubt inspire his audiences to seek out adventures of their own. I had the pleasure of meeting James at Popham Airfield a week before his departure and we went for a flight in his M16 gyrocopter. We flew south east towards Emsworth then south over the Solent before tracking west to take in the views of the Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. We then flew north over the Beaulieu river and back over the open countryside towards Popham. Just a short flight - now imagine flying 37,000 kms, some of it over hundreds of kms of open water! For the open water stretches James will of course be wearing a survival suit and carrying a life-raft along with a personal locator beacon (PLB). Like so many other people I was captivated by the sight and sound of a Vulcan at air shows during the past three decades. Seeing a Vulcan fly and hearing that distinctive howl leaves an impression that cannot be forgotten. Avro Vulcan XM655 was third from last of the Vulcan bombers produced for the Royal Air Force, being delivered in late 1964, and was part of the UK’s nuclear deterrent force throughout the 1960s and 1970s. It is now owned by Wellesbourne Airfield and is looked after by the XM655 Maintenance and Preservation Society, a volunteer organisation of Vulcan enthusiasts.
