“Some people here don’t have citizenship…”.
They’re targeting the younger generation, and so should we. Get your family together, nieces, nephews etc, educate them on how the VTP will impact their future and the future of their indigenous friends. Leave no stone unturned, their future depends on a majority NO.
In loungerooms and at kitchen islands across Australia in the next six weeks, young supporters of the Indigenous voice to parliament will start conversations with their grandparents on the referendum.
And some will have their work cut out.
This month, an exclusive Newspoll found retirees were among those most likely to be opposed to recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Constitution through an Indigenous advisory body.
That is one reason why young Australians are workshopping strategies this weekend at the Hands on Heart Youth Voice National Conference in Sydney.
Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe has called for the cancellation of the country's proposed parliamentary Indigenous "voice" referendum, calling it "window dressing."
As one of Australia's leading Indigenous politicians and an independent upper house member, Thorpe expressed her dissent towards the initiative during a presentation at the National Press Club in Sydney on Wednesday.
"The voice is the window-dressing for constitutional recognition," she told reporters. "This is just another attempt by a colonial government to make clear that it has power over us and force its rules upon us."
