Excerpts: Ancient Greek and Roman Theatre and its influence on Shakespeare
Ancient Greek and Roman Theatre and its Influence on Shakespeare and Elizabethan theatre was profound, having arrived across the channel via the renaissance theatre models of Italy and France. In this excerpt we take at a look at the structure of Greek and Roman Theatre models to gain a background for the style and approach that Shakespeare would master and transform for modern political and social purposes. An excerpt from our controversial documentary revisiting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte - a much maligned figure of European history, who nevertheless implemented radical social, political and institutional changes that have a direct relationship to modern European Union. In this clip we briefly address the common misperception that Napoleon was a racist, based not on reality, but on Allied propaganda, that would stop at nothing to remove this threat to their own power. One of the interesting aspects of Islam is its insistence on each person performing a pilgrimage (or Hajj) to Mecca at least once in their life if at all possible. It forms part of the Five Pillars of Islam; and in the medieval Muslim world, it enabled individuals to travel across borders, relatively unmolested and supplied with shelter, food and gifts by the rulers of the lands they passed along the way. This created incredible opportunities for people to mix, and to seek opportunities away from their homelands, in ways that were unimaginable for Christians of the time. In this short clip we touch on the 5 pillars, and get a sense of the pilgrim's journey during the 14th century. You can watch the full length video of the incredible adventures of medieval pilgrim-turned-traveller Ibn Battuta

Most people are unaware that before his voyages of Pacific exploration, James Cook served as Master aboard a Naval vessel during the British assault on Quebec, and cut his teeth as a cartographer in the dangerous waters of Newfoundland. Most people are surprised to learn that very little direct evidence exists for the literary career of poet and playwright William Shakespeare, of Stratford upon Avon (1564 - 1616). All of the extant documentation recorded during his lifetime pertains solely to his business dealings. This paucity of information has led to a growing body of sceptics and alternative authorship scholars who refer to themselves as "Anti-Stratfordians". This diverse group of researchers have spawned an entire literature of alternative candidates, from Sir Francis Bacon, Edward DeVere the Earl of Oxford and even Queen Elizabeth I herself. This short excerpt from our video -Brutus: Liberator of Rome or Traitor to Caesar is a composite of lines from players performing Shakespeare's famous play "Julius Caesar". The setting is Caesar's funeral. Brutus, formally Caesar's best friend and protégé had been convinced to participate in eliminating him by the other senators after Caesar had himself declared Dictator for life. In the mind of the conspirators, Caesar was viewed as a tyrant who had overstepped his boundary and was looking to destroy their beloved republic. Brutus shares his conflicted emotions with the crown and outlines why he participated in the coup against his friend and benefactor. In the full length video we look at some of the complex issues facing the Roman republic and Caesar's dictatorship; the historical portrayal of Brutus as a "bad guy", and Shakespeare's (and other's) rehabilitation of Brutus as a tragic figure torn apart by grief and internal conflict.

Sir John Franklin, a decorated Royal Navy Officer, had already led two previous arctic expeditions to chart the northern regions of Hudson’s bay in Canada. His first, the Coppermine River expedition in 1819, was plagued by vague orders, poor organisation, unreliable supplies and a dependence on guides with whom there was no solid relationship they could depend on. Additionally, the members of the expedition were completely unschooled in Arctic travel and survival, such that the project ended in complete disaster, with over half of the party perishing, while the remainder were barely rescued in time by Yellow-knife indigenous tribesmen. Despite his brush with disaster and criticism from some quarters, Franklin’s harrowing account of the ordeal became a best seller and any suggestion of incompetence was brushed off as bad luck. Indeed, Franklin himself appeared to have learned little from this experience apart from the conviction that it would have fared better if more money, men and supplies had been thrown at it (as opposed to cultivating a relationship with the natives and adopting their survival techniques). Indeed, Franklin viewed the failure as being largely the result of an overreliance on external support, rather than self-sufficiency and good-old British derring-do. He firmly believed such expeditions should be the domain of well provisioned and disciplined Navy men who would operate as cogs in a juggernaut machine that would overcome all obstacles through sheer determination and improvisation. This attitude would come to define the British approach to exploration in general, and Polar exploration in particular

Australian history is replete with strange stories of both heroes and rascals, sacrifice and bravery, triumph and failure. None more so than that of the struggle of indigenous Aboriginals to resist their displacement by a rapidly expanding colonization by Europeans. In this tragic landscape, strange alliances were often made, between desperate convict escapees (many of whom were political prisoners rather than petty criminals) and the outgunned indigenous people. This excerpt is from our video on Pemulwuy, the Aboriginal guerrilla warrior who almost broke the British. You can view the entire video here: https://youtu.be/euqzzoECwF4

Many people are unaware that Napoleon Bonaparte was actually Corsican, not French - and proudly so: his parents being partisan fighters against France's occupation and annexation of the Republic of Corsica. His father, a local official and member of the Corsican nobility, negotiated an amnesty for the family, and Napoleon would go on to finish his schooling in France, under constant humiliation by the French elites who viewed him as a provincial hick. It was to have a profound effect on the young man, and influence the course of his psychology for the rest of his life.
In this short excerpt, we look at the Pre-Napoleonic history of Corsica, from its Tuscan and Genoese colonisation, to the founding of an enlightened Republic, led by the enigmatic leader Pasquale Paoli, and its fight for independence from French Domination. To understand Napoleon, is to first understand the history of Corsica. You can view our full video on Napoleon, including the history of Corsica here: https://youtu.be/-yFK1UHPbsM

Vice Admiral Robert FitzRoy is one of the forgotten heroes of the mid eighteenth century. An aristocrat of the old school, he became an outstanding naval officer, rapidly rising through the ranks. He became most famous, as the taciturn and melancholy captain of the Beagle - taking the young and inexperienced Charles Darwin, as a mere companion, on the journey that would inspire his evolutionary theory of Natural Selection that changed the course of science, and history. But as a fundamentalist Christian, he struggled with the societal shockwaves the theory would send through Britain, and his role in motivating and encouraging Darwin. But quite aside from his incredible relationship with Darwin, FitzRoy went on to become governor of the young nation of New Zealand, championing indigenous Maori rights against the expansion of settlers, Then, most notably, being the developer of a series of barometers and warning stations across the United Kingdom, gathering data and establishing the first meteorological office in the world and publishing the first ever weather forecast- his system of charts and warning reports being the foundation of weather forecasts in use all around the world to this day, saving the lives of countless sailors and fishermen. Battling his entire life with what we would now diagnose as Bipolar disorder, his incredible feats of navigation and charting of some of the most treacherous seas in the world, as well as gathering weather data for stations across Britain, contrasted with his regular bouts of deep and debilitating depression, that would eventually see him take his own life, due to an illness that had no treatment any aroused very little sympathy.
