This version has been updated to a format that was developed a few episodes later. We previously had all of the comedic mash-ups at the end of the video similar to the style of one of our favorite channels called CinemaSins. However, we decided to mix the mash-ups in throughout the 10 facts where appropriate to illustrate some of the concepts discussed in the video.
Ps... I also feel like this is one of my worst episodes. Most of the facts are rushed and there are a few places where the audio sounds funky because I made a mistake while recording my voice overs, and instead of going back to fix them, I just clipped audio togther to make it work. Maybe one day I will revisit this album and add a few things while fixing others.
The Colour And The Shape Foo Fighters | Fun Facts Rock Episode #3 (Updated)
10 Fun Facts About The Colour & The Shape by Foo Fighters
Did you know that frontman David Grohl originally wanted to put a therapist's couch on the cover of the band's second album? Or that the album was named because of an old bowling pin? What about the drummer who left the band due to creative differences with Grohl?" Stick around and we will answer these questions and more!
1. Drummer Drama
Original drummer William Goldsmith left the band due to creative differences with David Grohl.
The band originally record the album at in Washington state at Bear Creek Studio in November of 1996. However, in February of 1997 David Grohl decided to take the songs to Hollywood's Grandmaster Recorders to re-record most of the album with Grohl performing the drum parts.
In 2011, Grohl confessed to an interviewer backstage at Oxegen; "There were a lot of reasons it didn't work out... but there was also a part of me that was like... I don't know if I'm finished playing the drums yet... I wish that I would have handled things differently." - David Grohl, Oxegen 2011 - Foo Fighters David Grohl, RTE2fm (Jul 10, 2011)
2. Taylor Hawkins
Taylor Hawkins makes a cameo appearance.
Although Hawkins joined the band after Grohl had already recorded the drum tracks, the band were kind enough to let him appear in the music videos for the album's singles.
3. Thrift Store Inspiration
The Foo Fighters' second album's title was inspired by a bowling pin purchased at a thrift shop.
The band's tour manager Gil Norton was known to rummage around at thrift stores and come back with odd knick-knacks and memorabilia. At one point he purchased a bowling pin with red and white stripes because he enjoyed "the colour and the shape" of it. The band found the phrase memorable and humorous enough to use it as an album title. Complete with the British spelling of "colour" with a "u" in homage to Norton who is British.
4. Ordinary Heroes
Grohl wrote "My Hero" as a tribute to ordinary everyday heroes.
"Heroes are a funny thing. When I was young I had KISS posters and I listened to Rush and thought the Beatles were magicians. But the real heroes in my life were people that I was close to. Pete Stahl who was the singer of Scream (Grohl's pre-Nirvana band) was one. I was 17 years old when we hit the road and that guy showed me the ropes, so to me he was a hero. And family members ...my mom's a saint. She raised two kids with no money and we managed to be a happy family, so she seems like a hero to me." - Grohl, How To Write A Rock Anthem, Morat, Kerrang! (June 2006)

NO ROYALTIES for Steve Albini In Utero
Nirvana Steve Albini Took 0% Royalties For Working On In Utero
Producer Steve Albini refused to take a percentage of the album royalties, electing to work only for a flat fee. Ok, so that fee was $100,000 dollars which is no small amount to an average person. But considering that the album would go on to sell well over 15 million copies, $100k is chump change compared to what he could have collected with even a mere 1% cut. Albini felt that it would be unethical to demand a percentage of royalties from the band, especially considering that Nirvana intended to produce a "minimalistic" album with very little input from anyone who wasn't named Kurt, David, or Krist. Even going so far as to say “I think paying a royalty to a producer or engineer is ethically indefensible” in a four page proposal he sent to the band when requesting to work on the album. As the producer himself explains:“All of the people that were carping at the band from the outside about what a mistake they’d made with this record, that pretty accurately represented what they wanted to do with their music… all of those people [are] parasites... They weren’t involved in making the record. They want, somehow or another, to claim authorship of the creative output of these other people who are actually doing the heavy lifting for their career. I can’t have any respect for somebody like that, who’s not involved in the creative process but then decides that they wanna snipe at it from the outside and manipulate people into doing things to suit them. F*** every one of those people.” - Albini, Read Steve Albini's Four page Proposal..., Kyle McGovern, Spin (Sep 26, 2013)
