Religion has often been used as a tool for control and oppression throughout history. Though faith can provide comfort and community for many, rigid dogma and hierarchical power structures within religious institutions have also enabled the manipulation and subjugation of people. By claiming divine authority, religious leaders have justified slavery, restricted rights, suppressed dissent, and bred intolerance. Systems of belief that cannot be questioned make people vulnerable to abuse. Coercion masquerading as salvation contradicts the very notion of a loving God. True spirituality empowers; it does not enslave. We must be vigilant to prevent religion from being weaponized as a means of domination, and ensure it remains an uplifting force for good, promoting liberation, justice and human dignity for all. The way forward is not to abolish faith but to reform rigid ideology, eliminate abusive hierarchies, and center the ethics of empowerment, equality and love.
