A slight reworking, I introduced some breaks in this version, instead of just verse, verse, verse. As a listener I can hear the advantage, as the writer I prefer - slightly - the all-word structure, as (which nobody seems to have picked up on yet) the lyrics detail the atrocities and lack of humanity in increasing severity. This is a song that other people are taking on in any case, probably for the music - the riff, that G-Dm-Am-Em with a doubleback on the G string each time, is a guitarists' dream - and pretty much any cover of this is going to be better than mine. That happens sometimes, you write a song and you know straight away that it's out of the nest as soon as you have composed it.
This is Take 2 from a mini-session, Take 18 overall. It's almost impossible for me to play for longer than 10 minutes a day now, and I wouldn't do that if I didn't need the endorphons and the validity of life it gives me, so there's no way to fine-tune anything. Hit 'record' and hit the chord.

I wrote this summer 1991, in the presence of one of Australia's most talented artists, Jahara Rhiannon (I know not if the lady is still active, but an incandescent talent - some of her works are included in the accompanying 'video'). In the UK, we were coming off of one recession and headingm into another, so fast you couldn't see the join. Some of this is direct, some of it parable.
The version here was recorded at HomaGe Studio (a pun-filled name for my home studio), for the 'One Day In May' album - literally, all the songs on it were recorded in one day, 22 May 1998. Some old material, some written that day. I am uploading them all, they will be under the relevant playlist. By 'album', it was a gig-album, by then home studios and recordable CDs were coming down in price, if you had the former, you could get 100 of the latter pressed up to sell at gigs. No, I don't still have 99 left...
This is, rhythm aside, nothing like I played the song live. I never did this with any of my bands, it was always solo acoustic. Why I decided to overdub it here, I will never know. I don't dislike it, but I think I might have to try and cut an acoustic version. It's not as if we aren't in another recession. This cut has the original lyric, which I updated slightly for inclusion in my poetry/lyric anthology 'Songs Without Music'.

Hello, thank you for coming to this video. This is one of the "Lost Lyrics" manuscripts, found in box 5. A somewhat tumultuous vortex of a lyric, it was not a surprise to find this amongst the 'Kurt Suite', the set of songs I was working on in December 1994. You're staring into the open casket of someone's heart here.
I'm afraid to say I don't read this as well as I would have wished. Quite simply, the disease has spread through my facial muscles as well now, and only one side of my mouth works. No wonder I'm not getting many dates...
I am trying to put together a final anthology from the latest cache of Lost Lyrics, focussing on the period December 1994 and August 1995. Provisional title is "Painting Rainbows Out Of Tears". I'd like to see the 'Kurt Suite' out there, mainly because of the fact that I am living [cough] proof that one can pull free from such a deep quicksand of emotional pain and despair. As I say frequently - what wouldn't I give, today, to go back to the problems I thought I had back then? There are just too many people, especially youngsters, harming themselves in all kinds of ways, thinking they are standing on the crossroads of Desperation Boulevard and Nowhere Avenue, with the only bus out of town having the Devil in the driving seat. Tomorrow morning is always better than your last night.

Hello, thank you for viewing this video. This is a remake of 'Outside/Inside?', a song who's lyrics I only rediscovered a few days ago, after 32 years (I'm not one for housework).
I was not unhappy with the original verson, cut yesterday, but as with all my new - in this case, 'new' - songs, I like to test their malleability. Here, I have compressed the verses, and variated the chord pressure, the intent to try and make the whole rather more claustrophobic, given the subject matter (juxtaposing a family dysfunction with the impact upon it of wider social bigotry).
I didn't quite pull off what I aimed at, tripping over microphone cables not helping one's concentration, but it's nice to know this song works several ways (I have since recorded a power-chord electric version, which takes it even further).

From a CD found in a box of studio session and demo discs, this was composed on the spot in-between cuts of 'Danielle's Ballad'.
I must take exception to my comment to the engineer at the end of the song, about it being "rubbish" - there's some good lines in this, and I wish I had worked it further, such as putting an Am/F break into the melody line.

The session was recorded on 2 cameras, and here, the footage is from the 'room' camera; videos 1308 with a 'b' are from the 'PoV' camera. As well as the alternate angle and distance, the sound mixes are slightly different on each.
