# ***Sonic Youth Biography***
***Sonic Youth*** was an American rock band based in *New York City*, formed in 1981.
Founding members ***[Thurston Moore](https://cutt.ly/AOmudDl)*** (guitar, vocals), ***[Kim Gordon](https://cutt.ly/LOmujx4)*** (bass, vocals, guitar) and ***[Lee Ranaldo](https://cutt.ly/GOmuz5Y)*** (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while ***[Steve Shelley](https://cutt.ly/OOmubhc)*** (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up.
***[Jim O'Rourke](https://cutt.ly/eOmuRjF)*** (bass, keyboards, guitar) was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005, and ***[Mark Ibold](https://cutt.ly/bOmuPsq)*** (guitar, bass) was a member from 2006 to 2011.
Their inventive use of alternate tunings, dissonance, and feedback, which they combined with the intensity of *hardcore punk* and the performance art aesthetic of New York's *avant-garde*, created a new sonic landscape with an impact that lasted for decades.
> Similar to ***[“Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star”](https://cutt.ly/4O2Ldy7)***, on eleventh studio album ***“NYC Ghosts & Flowers”***, ***Sonic Youth*** have again written a collection of shorter songs, focused primarily upon lyrics and song structuring rather than guitars.
>
> On the album, the influence of *beat poetry* on the band was strongly evident: The lyrics to most songs resembled the beat style; ***[Lenny Bruce](https://cutt.ly/oOKa3ss)*** and ***[D. A. Levy](https://cutt.ly/7OKa7vn)*** was name-checked, and the cover art was based on a painting by ***[William S. Burroughs](https://cutt.ly/pOKsrb9)***.
>
> Never before has the group sounded so consciously mature. For some fans, this album will sound refreshing, but for the many ***SY*** fans still in love with the confrontational attitude of ***["Death Valley '69"](https://cutt.ly/mO2BAIJ)*** the charged feel of ***["Teenage Riot"](https://cutt.ly/sO2Xs1I)*** or the epic scope of ***["The Diamond Sea"](https://cutt.ly/7O2V0WR)*** this album may sound tired.
# ***The Song***
***“Small Flowers Crack Concrete”*** is the fourth song on the band’s eleventh studio album ***[“NYC Ghosts & Flowers”](https://cutt.ly/MO2LH1P)***, released on May 16, 2000 by ***[DGC Records](https://cutt.ly/bOGhjh7)***.

***”The Cardigans”*** are a Swedish rock band formed in Jönköping, Sweden, in 1992 by guitarist ***[Peter Svensson](https://cutt.ly/SvRKLps)***, bassist ***[Magnus Sveningsson](https://cutt.ly/bvRLXDh)***, drummer ***[Bengt Lagerberg](https://cutt.ly/zvRLM53)***, keyboardist ***[Lars-Olof Johansson](https://cutt.ly/rvRL7Yj)*** and lead singer ***[Nina Persson](https://cutt.ly/WvRZtjw)***. Post-hiatus shows since 2012 have been with ***Oskar Humlebo*** on guitar instead of Svensson.
***”The Cardigans”*** are one of the most pleasing pop groups of the alternative era, started when guitarist ***Peter Svensson*** met bassist ***Magnus Sveningsson** in a hardcore group, though he had previously trained in music theory and jazz arranging. The two later grew tired of metal and decided to form a pop band with vocalist ***Nina Persson*** - an art-school friend who had never sung professionally.
***"Emmerdale"*** is the Cardigans debut studio album, released in Sweden on 18 February 1994 and on 24 September 1994, produced by ***[Tore Johansson](https://cutt.ly/IvRVs2e)***.
Though the sky is sunny on the cover, ***"Emmerdale"*** is quite a melancholy affair, capturing a depressed mood which conflicts with the mostly upbeat and positive arrangements.
In keeping with the fact that two of the original songs were written by a converted metal fan, bassist ***Magnus Svenignsson***, the cover of ***"Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"*** shouldn't surprise anyone. Though its clever arrangement and the touching vocals of ***Nina Persson*** - even though she's throwing around ***Ozzy Osbourne*** lyrics - render the song practically unrecognizable.
In the end, the battle between positive arrangements and melancholy lyrics creates a wistful mood that suits the ***”Cardigans”*** well.
***”Our Space”*** is the seventh song on The Cardigans debut album ***"[Emmerdale](https://cutt.ly/UbA9lh6)"***.

***"The Breeders"*** are an American alternative rock band based in **Dayton**, **Ohio**, consisting of members ***[Kim Deal](https://cutt.ly/emsxaWe)*** (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), her twin sister ***[Kelley Deal](https://cutt.ly/umsxddq)*** (lead guitar, vocals), ***[Josephine Wiggs](https://cutt.ly/JmsxgPF)*** (bass guitar, vocals) and ***Jim Macpherson*** (drums).
***"The Breeders"*** genesis came during the ***"[Pixies](https://cutt.ly/qmsxWk6)"** 1988 European tour alongside ***"4AD"*** labelmates ***"[Throwing Muses](https://cutt.ly/Umsxn7T)"***, when ***"Pixies"*** bassist ***Kim Deal*** and ***"Throwing Muses"*** guitarist ***[Tanya Donelly](https://cutt.ly/0msxYll)*** opted to team up for an extracurricular side project.
The band’s fifth album ***"All Nerve"*** isn't so much a conscious attempt to re-create the past as it is the rekindling of a special chemistry. That chemistry is especially strong when the ***”Breeders”*** try new things. ***Wiggs*** gets her first lead vocal on an album track with ***"MetaGoth"*** and her unflappable cool gives it a dark, restless post-punk beauty that isn't like anything else in the ***”Breeders”*** songbook.
The band even finds creative ways of dealing with the feelings of mortality and history that accompany this kind of reunion on ***"[Walking with a Killer](https://cutt.ly/6mhtaPm)"*** a deceptively pretty tale of murder in the cornfields, and ***"[Blues at the Acropolis](https://cutt.ly/zmhtW1m)"*** which superimposes modern junkies and drunks with dead heroes of the past.
The decade-long gap between ***”All Nerve”*** and ***”[Mountain Battles](https://cutt.ly/OmhtOlF)”*** was the ***”Breeders”*** longest hiatus yet, but it was time well spent - this is one of the band's finest blends of sugar and swagger, space and noise.

"***New Order***"are an English rock band formed in 1980 by vocalist and guitarist ***[Bernard Sumner](https://cutt.ly/9b9XrVA)***, bassist ***[Peter Hook](https://cutt.ly/9b9XrVA)*** and drummer ***[Stephen Morris](https://cutt.ly/eb9XiCi)***. The band formed after the demise of post-punk band ***"[Joy Division](https://cutt.ly/eb9XiCi)"***, following the suicide of lead singer ***Ian Curtis***; they were joined by ***[Gillian Gilbert](https://cutt.ly/mb9XsDe)*** on keyboards later that year.
***”New Order's”*** integration of post-punk with electronic and dance music made them one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s.
Embracing the electronic textures and disco rhythms of the underground club culture many years in advance of its contemporaries, the group's pioneering fusion of new wave aesthetics and dance music successfully bridged the gap between the two worlds, creating a distinctively thoughtful and oblique brand of synth pop appealing equally to the mind, body, and soul.
***"Republic"*** is the band's sixth studio album released on 3 May 1993 in the United Kingdom by ***"CentreDate Co Ltd"*** in association with ***"[London Records](https://cutt.ly/db4ygrV)"*** and on 11 May 1993 in the United States by ***"[Qwest](https://cutt.ly/ib4yjWS)"*** and ***"[Warner Bros. Records](https://cutt.ly/ib4yjWS)"***.
Pulling back slightly from the raw, dance-oriented ***”[Technique](https://cutt.ly/enevoJj)”***, ***”New Order”*** took a break for four years and then crafted another slice of prime guitar pop. In keeping with previous work, ***”Republic”*** simply borrows elements of contemporary innovations in club music to frame a set of effortlessly enjoyable alternative pop songs.
The album is just soaked in a culture of breakbeats, synth stabs, and pulsating electronic basslines, just another dividing factor, but one that really ups the ante for those who love it.
***"New Order"*** had become practically the polar opposite of their Ian-Curtis-fronted selves by the time of ***"Republic"***. The album marks the point in which the band had truly hit a 180 degree turn, though, when you consider that it’s not exactly sunshine and dance tunes all the way through, it may have been more like 179. (***Log S***, ***”[SputnikMusic](https://cutt.ly/vb4Lwkj)”***)

***"The Smiths"***were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. Consisting of vocalist ***[Morrissey](https://cutt.ly/7vnQKtF)***, guitarist ***[Johnny Marr](https://cutt.ly/XvnQXo2)***, bassist ***[Andy Rourke](https://cutt.ly/yvnQVIJ)***, and drummer ***[Mike Joyce](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Joyce_(musician))***,
critics consider the band one of the most important to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s.
Based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr, the Smiths' focus on a guitar, bass, and drum sound, and fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk, were a rejection of the synthesiser-based dance-pop of the time. The friction between Morrissey and Marr resulted in a flurry of singles and albums over the course of three years that provided the blueprint for British guitar rock in the following decade.
***"The World Won't Listen"*** is a band's second of three compilation albums , released on 23 February 1987 by **"[Rough Trade Record](https://cutt.ly/FvmyIRL)s"**.
The album was conceived as a collection of the band's singles and their B-sides from 1985 to 1987.
All tracks are written by Morrissey/Marr, except ***"Money Changes Everything"*** and ***"Oscillate Wildly"***, written by Johnny Marr, and ***"Golden Lights"***, written by ***[Twinkle](https://cutt.ly/FvmyIRL)***.
