Sufferers Make Strong Believers
It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
Lamentations 3:27.
This is as good as a promise. It has been good, it is good, and it will be good for me to bear the yoke.
Early in life I had to feel the weight of conviction, and ever since it has proved a soul-enriching burden. Should I have loved the gospel so well had I not learned by deep experience the need of salvation by grace? Jabez was more honorable than his brethren because his mother bare him with sorrow, and those who suffer much in being born unto God make strong believers in sovereign grace.
The yoke of censure is an irksome one, but it prepares a man for future honor. He is not fit to be a leader who has not run the gauntlet of contempt. Praise intoxicates if it be not preceded by abuse. Men who rise to eminence without struggle usually fall into dishonor.
The yoke of affliction, disappointment, and excessive labor is by no means to be sought for; but when the Lord lays it on us in our youth, it frequently develops a character which glorifies God and blesses the church.
Come, my soul, bow thy neck; take up they cross. It was good for thee when young; it will not harm thee now.

The Reason for Singing
The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
Zephaniah 3:17.
What a word is this! God The Lord in the center of His people in all the majesty of His power! This presence alone suffices to inspire us with peace and hope. Treasures of boundless might are stored in our Lord, and He dwells in His church; therefore may His people shout for joy.
We not only have His presence, but He is engaged upon His choice work of salvation. "He will save." He is always saving: He takes His name of Jesus from it. Let us not fear any danger, for He is mighty to save.
Nor is this all. He abides evermore the same, He saves, He finds rest in loving, He will not cease to love. His love gives Him joy. He even finds a theme for song in His beloved. This is exceedingly wonderful. When God wrought creation He did not sing but simply said, "It is very good"; but when He came to redemption, then the sacred Trinity felt a joy to be expressed in song, Think of it, and be astonished! Jehovah Jesus sings a marriage song over His chosen bride. She is to Him His love, His joy, His rest, His song. O Lord Jesus, by Thine immeasurable love to us teach us to love Thee, to rejoice in Thee,
and to sing unto Thee our life-Psalm,

Comfort En Route Home
And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Genesis 50:24.
Joseph had been an incarnate providence to his brethren. All our Josephs die, and a thousand comforts die with them. Egypt was never the same to Israel after Joseph was dead, nor can the world again be to some of us what it was when our beloved ones were alive.
But see how the pain of that sad death was alleviated! They had a promise that the living God would visit them. A visit from Jehovah! What a favor! What a consolation! What a heaven below! O Lord, visit us this day; though indeed we are not worthy that Thou shouldest come under our roof.
But more was promised: the Lord would bring them out. They would find in Egypt a cold welcome when Joseph was dead; nay, it would become to them a house of bondage. But it was not to be so forever; they would come out of it by a divine deliverance and march to the land of promise. We shall not weep here forever. We shall be called home to the gloryland to join our dear ones. Wherefore, "comfort one another with these words."

The Leadership of Our Guide
Howbiet when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.
John 16:13.
Truth is like a vast cavern into which we desire to enter, but we are not able to traverse it alone. At the entrance it is clear and bright; but if we would go further and explore its innermost recesses, we must have a guide, or we shall lose ourselves. The Holy Spirit, who knows all truth perfectly, is the appointed guide of all true believers, and He conducts them as they are able to bear it, from one inner chamber to another, so that they behold the deep things of God, and His secret is made plain to them.
What a promise is this for the humbly inquiring mind! We desire to know the truth and to enter into it. We are conscious of our own aptness to err, and we feel the urgent need of a guide. We rejoice that the Holy Spirit is come and abides among us. He condescends to act as a guide to us, and we gladly accept His leadership. "All truth" we wish to learn, that we may not be one-sided and out of balance. We would not be willingly ignorant of any part of revelation lest thereby we should miss blessing or incur sin.
The Spirit of God has come that He may guide us into all truth:
let us with obedient hearts hearken to His words and follow His lead,

La recompensa es segura.
“Y cualquiera que dé a uno de estos pequeñitos un vaso de agua fría solamente, por cuanto es discípulo, de cierto les digo que no perderá su recompensa.”
Mateo 10:42.
Pues bien, yo podría hacer al menos eso. Podría realizar un acto de amabilidad para con el siervo de El Señor. El Señor sabe que amo a todos los discípulos, y consideraría un honor lavar sus pies. Por causa de El Señor amo a los discípulos. ¡Cuán agraciado de parte de El Señor es mencionar una acción tan insignificante: “dar un vaso de agua fría”! Por pobre que sea, yo puedo hacer eso: puedo hacer eso, por humilde que sea: y lo haré de buena gana. El Señor se da cuenta de eso aunque parezca tan pequeño: lo advierte cuando es hecho al más insignificante de Sus seguidores.
Evidentemente, no es el costo, ni la destreza, ni la cantidad, lo que Él mira, sino el motivo: eso que hacemos a un discípulo, por ser un discípulo, es visto y recompensado por El Señor. Él no nos recompensa por el mérito de lo que hacemos, sino de conformidad a las riquezas de Su gracia.
Yo doy un vaso de agua fría, y Él me da a beber del agua viva.
Yo doy a uno de Sus pequeñitos, y Él me trata como a uno de ellos.
Jesús encuentra una apología para Su liberalidad en aquello mismo que Su gracia me ha conducido a hacer, y dice:

Hombres como Hombres; Dios como Dios.
“Yo, yo soy vuestro consolador. ¿Quién eres tú para que tengas temor del hombre, que es mortal, y del hijo de hombre, que es como heno? El texto mismo ha de ser tomado como la porción para hoy. No hay necesidad de abundar sobre él. Tú que tiemblas, léelo, créelo, aliméntate de él, y arguméntalo delante del Señor.
La persona que temes es, después de todo, sólo un hombre; mientras que quien promete consolarte es Dios, tu Hacedor, y el Creador del cielo y de la tierra. El consuelo infinito protege con creces de un peligro muy limitado. “¿Dónde está el furor del que aflige?” Está en la mano del Señor.
Es únicamente la furia de una criatura moribunda; furia que llegará a un fin tan pronto como el aliento abandone las fosas nasales. ¿Por qué, entonces, deberíamos temer a alguien que es tan frágil como nosotros mismos?
No deshonremos a nuestro Dios convirtiendo en un dios al hombre insignificante. Podemos convertir en un ídolo a un hombre, teniéndole un miedo excesivo o rindiéndole un amor desordenado.

"Os daré las misericordias fieles de David." Hechos 13:34.
Nada que sea del hombre es seguro; pero todo lo que es de Dios sí lo es. En especial, las misericordias del pacto son misericordias seguras, tal como dijo David: "Pacto perpetuo, ordenado en todas las cosas, y será guardado."
Estamos seguros de que el Señor ofreció en serio Su misericordia. Él no habló meras palabras: hay sustancia y verdad en cada una de Sus promesas. Sus misericordias son en verdad misericordias. Incluso si una promesa pareciera que no se cumplirá por causa de la muerte, no dejará de cumplirse, pues el buen Señor cumplirá Su palabra.
Nosotros estamos seguros de que el Señor otorgará las misericordias prometidas a todos aquellos que están bajo el pacto. Esas misericordias llegarán a todos los elegidos del Señor, en el tiempo señalado. Serán cumplidas para toda la simiente, desde el más pequeño de ellos hasta el mayor de ellos.
Estamos seguros de que el Señor continuará Sus misericordias para con Su propio pueblo. Él no da y quita. Lo que ya nos ha dado es la señal de muchas cosas más. Lo que no hemos recibido es tan seguro como lo que ya nos ha sido otorgado; por tanto, hemos de esperar delante del Señor y quedarnos tranquilos. No hay ninguna razón justificable para la menor duda. El amor de Dios, y Su palabra, y Su fidelidad serán guardados. Muchas cosas son cuestionables, pero en cuanto al Señor cantamos:
"Pues Sus misericordias perdurarán
Siempre fieles, siempre seguras."
