It's difficult to deny that we are in the midst of a psychedelic renaissance. Ayahuasca and other plant medicines, DMT, LSD, magic mushrooms, and even purely synthetic drugs like ketamine and MDMA are gaining widespread acceptance. These compounds have been popular for decades, but in many places in the US, they are actually becoming LEGAL. The situation however, is complicated...and volatile. Form the oft exaggerated, but also very real, dangers that psychedelics can pose to a very small fraction of a percent of the people that use them, to the also real cultural appropriaton and exploitation of indigenous people and culture, there is a clear need to walk with knowledge wisely. But then, wisdom needs clarity, and we are severely deficient on both counts. Aside from the chaos of a severely divided populace, we have conflicting narratives, misguided and misinformed misinformation spreaders, out of date and out of touch beliefs from older generations, and last, but certainly not least, profit motive, all muddying the waters. Withut a unified sense of purpose, no movement can gain traction. There is much within, but also outside, of the scope of psychedelic medicine that must be brought into alignment if we are to have any real, meaningful, and lasting impact. The capuchin monkey's of Misahualli, Ecuador are truly extraordinary. Not only do they light lighters and use them to cook and eat their own fur....they are superstitious as well. As if monkeys using onion juice as bug repellent wasn't enough, these capuchins seem to believe that it only works if the onions are rubbed in the lap of a human. One afternoon a friend and attendee of one of our retreats tested this theory, and ended up with a writhing mass of 7 capuchins in his lap, rubbing onions all ever themselves, and peeing all over him. One of the funniest things that I have ever seen in my life.
