Cupping your hands around your ears can form a crude audio filter. That may help reception if your receiver is unselective. Try it and see what range of frequencies it works for you.

It's nice having a good case for the uBitx. But commercially available type may the wrong size and you might wish to try making one yourself. Here's an idea for a no-bend case using commonly available angle aluminium and chopping board.

Some kitchen aluminium foil, some book covering and some wire. That's all it takes to make your own capacitor. And it can be made variable as well. Ideal for bare-bones crystal sets where you wish to make all the parts.
The larger the area of overlapping foil and the tighter the pressure (consider a clothes peg to hold tight) the higher the capacitance. Values from a few pF up to 1nF should be readily possible.
