On the outskirts of Rotorua lies an amazing, active thermal area that you can explore for free called Rainbow Mountain. The nice walking track gives you easy access to views of a beautiful blue lake along with red ochre cliffs that give Rainbow Mountain its name. If you like mountain biking, there's also a great trail for that, which ends at the famous Kerosene Creek natural hot springs.
