# ***Pavement Biography***
***Pavement*** is an American indie rock band that formed in *[Stockton, California](https://cutt.ly/kAcQ2T5)*, in 1989. For most of their career, the group consisted of ***[Stephen Malkmus](https://cutt.ly/wAcWVDV)*** (vocals and guitar), ***[Scott Kannberg](https://cutt.ly/NAcW1zU)*** (guitar and vocals), ***[Mark Ibold](https://cutt.ly/RAcW0al)*** (bass), ***[Steve West](https://cutt.ly/rAcW2Jk)*** (drums), and ***[Bob Nastanovich](https://cutt.ly/bAcW3NZ)*** (percussion and vocals).
With their fractured songs, unexpected blasts of feedback, laconic vocals, cryptic literate lyrics, and defiant low-fidelity, ***Pavement***, along with ***[Sebadoh](https://cutt.ly/bAcW7TL)***, were the leaders of the *lo-fi* movement that dominated the U.S. *indie rock* in the early '90s.
> The band's fifth studio album, ***"Terror Twilight"***, is reflective, with the occasional flight of fancy that fits neatly into the laid-back flow. It's also the tightest record ***Pavement*** ever made, largely due to producer ***[Nigel Godrich](https://cutt.ly/MAbrKCo)***, who helped reign in excessive tendencies in ***[Radiohead](https://cutt.ly/2AbhZB1)*** and ***[Beck](https://cutt.ly/2AbhZB1)*** and does the same here.
>
> He hoped to create a "straighter" album and bring the band to a wider audience. but after finishing the tour for the album,***Pavement*** disbanded.
>
> Though it's hard not to miss the gloriously messy sprawl of ***Pavement*** at their peak, this carefully crafted, languid recasting of their signature sound is effective and winds up as a fitting, bittersweet farewell for the best band of the '90s.

***"Stereolab"*** are an English-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990.
Led by the songwriting team of ***[Tim Gane](https://cutt.ly/BmFnRwl)*** (guitar and keyboards) and ***[Lætitia Sadie](https://cutt.ly/dmFnYuG)r***(vocals, keyboards and guitar), the group's music combines influences from *krautrock*, *lounge* and *1960s pop music*, often incorporating a repetitive motorik beat with heavy use of vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French.
Their lyrics have political and philosophical themes influenced by the ***[Surrealist](https://cutt.ly/imFnOlx)*** and ***[Situationist](https://cutt.ly/ymFnAt5)*** movements.
Although ***"Stereolab"*** found success in the underground music scene and were influential enough to spark a renewed interest in older analogue instruments, they have never had a significant commercial impact. Meaby the key is lost in the interview where ***Gane*** and ***Sadier*** have discussed their musical philosophy - *"to be unique for us was more important than to be good"*.
While the two years between ***"[Dots and Loops](https://cutt.ly/Mm9iHCw)"*** and ***"[Cobra](https://cutt.ly/bm9i2Wp)"*** resulted in stagnation, the two years separating ***"Cobra"*** and the band’s seventh album ***"Sound-Dust"*** find ***"Stereolab"*** deliberately recharging their creative juices, delving deeper into avant-garde composition and '60s swing pop in equal measures.
If it's taken on a pure sonic level, the album can often be quite pleasing and intriguing, especially the sophisticated horn and flute arrangements, which producer ***O'Rourke*** makes lushly alluring.
It's hard not to wish that the entire record was constructed simply of instrumentals of this sort, since that's when ***"Stereolab"*** sounds fully recharged and gorgeous. As it stands, the album is held back by their insistence on simple songs and simple vocals that keep the record earthbound and solely the province of the already converted.
***”Double Rocker”*** is the seventh song on the band's seventh studio album, ***"[Sound-Dust](https://cutt.ly/Bm9oray)"***, released on 28 August 2001 by ***"[Duophonic Records](https://cutt.ly/nmFZnnE)"*** and ***"[Elektra Records](https://cutt.ly/AmFZWIh)"***.
It was ***"Stereolab"*** last album to feature singer and guitarist ***[Mary Hansen](https://cutt.ly/bmBRfKp)***, who died in a biking accident the following year.

***"The Auteurs"*** were a British alternative rock band of the 1990s, and a vehicle for songwriter ***[Luke Haines](https://cutt.ly/JncuRe6)*** (guitar, piano and vocals).
Formerly a member of ***"[The Servants](https://cutt.ly/LncuIc1)"***, Haines created the Auteurs with his then-girlfriend ***[Alice Readman](https://cutt.ly/LncuIc1)*** on bass guitar, former classmate ***[Glenn Collins](https://cutt.ly/AnciuAS)*** on drums, and later added ***[James Banbury](https://cutt.ly/nncisTw)*** on cello.
At the start of their career, ***”The Auteurs”*** became associated with the Britpop movement, however this association was not liked by ***Haines***, who frequently made derogatory remarks about his peers.
Frontman and the group's guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, wrote highly melodic pop songs that combined the airy melodies of ***[George Harrison](https://cutt.ly/encihWZ)*** with the cutting social observations of ***[Ray Davies](https://cutt.ly/OncikOl)***; they were sharp, intelligent songs, full of humor and gorgeous melancholy, even when loudly rocking.
With its disciplined guitar, piano and strained vocals, the group’s 1993 debut, ***"New Wave"***, is the place to start. Its dozen tracks capture Haines’ view of the hollowness of modern British life: the arrestingly lethargic single ***“[Show Girl](https://cutt.ly/UnURq9x)”***, the hypnotic ***“[How Could I Be Wrong](https://cutt.ly/tnURe5R)”*** and the catchy class warfare anthem ***“[Valet Parking](https://cutt.ly/lnUE5bF)”***.
Guest cellist ***James Banbury’s*** lithe dips and swoops adorn the songs like costume jewelry, while the sympathetic rhythm section (bassist ***Alice Readman*** and drummer ***Glenn Collins***) never over-asserts itself.
As ***[Paul Graham](https://cutt.ly/UnQvk09)*** wrote: *If this is not a five-star album, I guess I am at a loss at what is”*.
***”Idiot Brother”*** is the tenth song on the band’s debut album ***”[New Wave](https://cutt.ly/AnUguFf)”*** released in 1993. under the british record label ***”[Hut Recordings](https://cutt.ly/onciBes)”***.The album was shortlisted for the 1993 ***”Mercury Prize”***, and included in the ***“[1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die](https://cutt.ly/onciBes)”*** list.

***"Garbage"*** is an American rock band formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. The band's lineup - consisting of Scottish singer and musician ***[Shirley Manson](https://cutt.ly/1bBcrip)*** (vocals) and American musicians ***[Duke Erikson](https://cutt.ly/gbBcyPD)*** (guitar, bass, keyboards), ***[Steve Marker](https://cutt.ly/FbBcoiN)*** (guitar, keyboards), and ***[Butch Vig](https://cutt.ly/NbBxPnj)*** (drums, production) - has remained unchanged since its inception. All four members are involved in songwriting and production.
A native of Viroqua, Wisconsin, Vig learned to play piano as a child and drums as a teenager. After leaving college, he met future bandmate Erikson in the band ***"[Spooner](https://cutt.ly/NbBxPnj)"***.
But the ***"Garbage"*** become ***"Garbage"*** when band's door opens for Manson, who kicked off her music career at a young age, joining rock band ***"[Goodbye Mr. MacKenzie](https://cutt.ly/YbBcc7E)"***, and alt-rock foursome ***"[Angelfish](https://cutt.ly/2bBcQTI)"***. After a couple auditions, she formally joined ***"Garbage"*** as their lead singer in August 1994.
More diverse than their first two studio albums, musically more melodic and lyrically more direct, the band’s third album, ***"Beautiful Garbage"*** featured electronica fused with contemporary hip hop, with influences coming from 1980s new wave to 1960s girl groups.
***"Garbage"*** slogged through the trenches of alt-rock in the '80s, and they came together at the precise moment in the '90s when they could fashion modern-sounding music consciously picking up anything sonically interesting in the underground, crafting them together with skill and a keen commercial eye.
On their third record it's all more evident because of a more shiny, more sugary, and unabashedly pop coating.
It's unlikely to storm the charts like their first two records, especially since there aren't standout singles like on the earlier albums, but overall the record works better, perhaps their best album.
***“Til The Day I Die”*** is the fourth song on Garbage third studio album ***”[Beautiful Garbage](https://cutt.ly/3b1klvj)”***, released on October 1, 2001, on ***“Mushroom Records”*** and ***“Interscope Records”***.

# ***The Blur Biography***
***Blur*** are an English rock band, formed in *[London](https://cutt.ly/lIPfkyL)* in 1988. The group consists of singer ***[Damon Albarn](https://cutt.ly/kIOpffK)***, guitarist ***[Graham Coxon](https://cutt.ly/MIOpgnF)***, bassist ***[Alex James](https://cutt.ly/oIOpkoU)*** and drummer ***[Dave Rowntree](https://cutt.ly/2IOpxaQ)***.
Following an image makeover in the mid-'90s, the group emerged as the most popular band in the U.K., establishing itself as heir to the English guitar pop tradition of ***[The Kinks](https://cutt.ly/fIPfT16)***, ***[The Small Faces](https://cutt.ly/KIPfOYh)***, ***[The Who](https://cutt.ly/FIPfJK5)***, ***[The Jam](https://cutt.ly/XIPglkh)***, ***[Madness](https://cutt.ly/CIPgCC3)***, and ***[The Smiths](https://cutt.ly/GIPg0k0)***. In the process, the group broke down the doors for a new generation of guitar bands that became labelled as *[britpop](https://cutt.ly/dIPg7M8)*.
Through some reinvention, ***Blur*** reclaimed their position as an art pop band in the late '90s by incorporating *indie rock* and *lo-fi* influences, which finally gave them their elusive American success in 1997.
But the band's legacy remained in Britain, where they helped revitalise *guitar pop* by skillfully updating the country's pop traditions.
> Under the suggestion of the band's guitarist, on the fifth self-titled studio album, the band underwent a stylistic change, becoming influenced by American *indie rock* bands such as ***[”Pavement”](https://cutt.ly/SID22HK)***.
> They may superficially appear to be a break from tradition, but it is a logical progression, highlighting the band's rich eclecticism and sense of songcraft.
> Certainly, they are trying for new sonic territory, bringing in shards of white noise, gurgling electronics, raw guitars, and druggy psychedelia, but these are just extensions of previously hidden elements of ***Blur's*** music.
>
> There might be dark overtones to the record, but the band sounds positively joyous, not only in making noise but wreaking havoc with the expectations of its audience and critics.
>
> ***Albarn*** stepped out with the *hip-hop/pop* cartoon group ***[“Gorillaz”](https://cutt.ly/MID9JzD)*** in 2000, a collaboration with artist ***[Jamie Hewlett](https://cutt.ly/bID9VV1)*** that soon eclipsed the popularity of ***Blur*** internationally.

The compilation ***"Oscillons from the Anti-Sun"*** is not part of ***”Stereolab”*** ongoing ***”[Switched On](https://cutt.ly/3m9ifx0)”*** series, which rounds up the stray singles, EPs, and B-sides, but it's easy to see how the casual observer might think it's the fourth installment in the series. Instead, this 35-track box set contains material previously released on British and European CD singles and EPs between 1993 and 2000.
Frustratingly, the EPs are neither presented in their original running order, nor is the music presented chronologically. Instead, the three discs jump around from EP to single, from year to year, without regard to the band's ever-shifting lineups.
Despite this, the sequencing of the music flows well, and it's an entertaining listen since this indeed covers the group's peak years.
