All Scripture is Vital If we were to continue to think of the Bible like going to grad school, we could see it as containing all the courses needed to graduate. Graduation from God’s grad school on Knowing Him would mean what 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) says. We need to start with a verse that we all know so well. But look together at the emphasis God gives to us. Please stand with me and from the screen follow along with the words from 2 Timothy 3:16-17: • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, • [All Scripture given] is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, • [All Scripture was given] that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. Today we are opening to the final and most important of all the courses needed for graduation, it is the last book of the sixty-six of God's Word. If the Bible is like a good graduate school, all of the courses would follow a curriculum with a scope and sequence that reflected careful planning and determinations of progression. That is exactly what we find. The last Book of the Bible, containing the last course God gave for us to know Him, maybe perhaps the most important of all. Why would such a difficult book of the Bible be most important? Because God sent it last, as the closing wrap-up to everything He ever said, that’s why. We Need to See Each Piece as a Part of the Whole The Bible was sent from God to us. But the Bible that we hold in our hands this morning is for many of us, much like a puzzle box that has 31,103 pieces. That is how many verses there are in the Bible, and that’s how many different little bits of the “big picture” are spread across the sixty-six books of the Bible. But God chose to end the course of His Bible with a summary, a wrap-up of everything in all the other 65 parts of the book. One of the biggest tools to getting a grasp on the Bible is to see that: • God summarizes His plan in the book of Revelation. • God ties together in the book of Revelation, everything He starts in all the other parts of the Bible. • God explains in the book of Revelation, how all of the other parts of the Bible fit together. It would be fair to say that Revelation contains the key to fitting all of the other pieces of the puzzle together, much like we turn to front of the puzzle box, and look at the complete picture. Then with the entire scope of how everything fits, we can grab any individual piece and see a section it belongs to. We can also sort pieces into groupings and know that even if they are not completely pieced together, we know for sure what they are a part of in the big picture. That metaphor of Revelation being the big picture on the front of the box is the key to meshing all those confusing 31,103 individual little verse pieces, that we read each time we open to any part of God's Word. Grab & Hold the Big Picture There is One Author, and One Plan presented in the Scriptures; and the Author Himself sends to us the key to fit it all together. He sent the cover for the box, the last course of study, the summary of all that He has said, written so that we could understand what His plans have been since Creation, what they are at this very moment, and what they will be when we enter eternity to dwell with Him forever. That is what a study through Revelation does: it ties together the whole Book, it makes every piece fit, and it shows us what God wants from us RIGHT NOW! That is why there is no book we could ever study that could more deeply impact our ability to Know God, that this book we are entering back into today. So here we go. To illustrate mere emotional faith that is also dead, James uses one of the most unbelievable comparisons. He explains to us one of the inner workings of the spirit world. Only here do we see applied, what the Gospels so clearly illustrated—the complete intellectual and emotional faith of demons that can never save them. James says— Demons Have Strong Faith It may shock you, but God's Word testifies that demons have faith! What do they believe? Demons have a clearly defined faith. 1. Demons completely believe in the reality of God. They have no doubts. They have seen the Lord, seen His Throne, know all about the spiritual world, and have met Jesus Christ personally. Demons could never be classified as either atheists or agnostics. They had an accurate faith in God intellectually, in their minds. You can believe all the correct facts and not be saved. 2. Demons completely believe in Deity of Christ. Demons trembled in Christ's presence while He walked the Earth. They have no doubts about who He really is. Often we hear the demons publicly stating to Jesus, “I know who You are” (Mark 5:7). Mark records Peter’s eyewitness report that whenever demons met Christ on earth, they fell down and affirmed He was God the Son (Mark 3:11–12). Demons had an emotional response to their faith, they feared, shuddered, and trembled. 3. Demons completely believe in the Supreme Power Christ held over their destiny. They even would plead for some leniency, or mercy from Jesus Christ as the ultimate Judge who held their eternal destiny in His Hands (Mark 5:1–13). Demons had a firm intellectual faith. 4. Demons completely believed in Hell and the horror of eternal punishment. They knew and testified to people that they believed in the existence of a place of punishment, and knew that they were headed towards torment (Mark 5:7), and said that they didn’t want to go there “before the time” (Matthew 8:39). Demons had a firm emotional faith. 5. Demons completely believe in submission to God's Word. They never expressed doubt that His Word was true, and they usually instantly obeyed, though a few did one final shake of their victim, or convulsion just to show their malignant hearts. As Jews testified daily in their Shema from Deuteronomy 6:4 That there was only one Living and True God “Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord!” (Deut. 6:4). So as James repeats, “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder” (James 2:19, NIV). Believing to the point of fear and trembling does not save. Only a life-changing faith, produced by God within, can save. Now we need to apply this sermon James has just preached to our lives today. • First, an intellectual agreement or assent doesn’t save us. That is James’ point; intellectual belief is present in demons. • Second, an emotional response, coupled with an intellectual response is also not sufficient. Demons had regular emotional responses to their faith in Christ as Creator, as Omnipotent Ruler, and as the Ultimate Judge. None of those intellectual and emotional responses prompted by their faith were sufficient. Saving Faith is faith that is real, faith that has power, faith that results in a changed life. So what is sufficient, real, saving faith? That is the point James makes. Saving faith goes beyond intellectual assent to facts, and a resulting emotional response to God’s Word—and continues into a life-transforming walk. God Sees ONLY 4 World Empires First, in Daniel 2, God gives an overview of Human History from a human perspective, with all of the outward beauty and accomplishments: • Gold = Babylonian Empire (627-539 BC); • Silver = Medo-Persian Empire (539-330 BC); • Bronze = Greek Empire (330-63 BC); • Iron = Roman Empire (63 BC – 476 AD – 1453 AD – present). Many pieces of the former Roman Empire have had their days: Byzantine, Holy Roman Empire, Spanish, English, etc. But God says the Empire that never was defeated just faded away, revives. Second, in Daniel 7:3-7 God shows the same four Empires and their character, but from His perspective; and when God describes them, each are seen as beasts that bite, devour, and crush. Finally, in Daniel 9:24-27 we have what may be the single most amazing Biblical End Times prophecy. In this prophecy we see clearly God giving us connection of the Roman Empire past and to the Roman Empire future. God’s Amazingly Clear Prophecy Read with me about that event back in the Old Testament prophet Daniel. Dan 9:24-27 (NKJV) “Seventy weeks are determined For your people and for your holy city, = Jews & Jerusalem To finish the transgression, To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity, = Christ's First Coming To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy. = Christ's Second Coming “Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; = 49 years + 434 years The street shall be built again, and the wall, Even in troublesome times. 49 years = 445 BC (Nehemiah 2:1-8) to 395 BC 26 “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; 434 years = 395 BC to 30 AD And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
