Rough River 2023: The Largest Gathering of Canard Aircraft in the World!
On the third weekend of September, canard aircraft from around the US (and the world!) fly into Rough River State Park airport in Kentucky (2I3) for a weekend-long festival of everything Canard. A very loosely organized event, there aren't seminars or vendors - it's lovers of canard aircraft meeting, talking about and flying their aircraft.
2023 was the 27th annual Rough River fly-in, and I...well, flew in! This video documents my trip, along with some of the things I saw while I was there.

I had a partial alternator failure on my trip back from Maine, so it was time to pull the airplane apart and replace the faulty alternator. While I had it apart, I also fixed a faulty EGT probe (which turned out not to be faulty after all!) and installed a new injector restrictor to address a fuel imbalance, along with some other electrical items.
Now that I have made all of these repairs and changes, it's time to go up for a test flight, to ensure that everything that has been changed is operating correctly. I re-run a new GAMI spread test, as well as test the descent rate of the airplane at idle, while holding best glide speed.
Finally, I do a couple of practice landings at a nearby airport, then a semi-darkness landing back home among tall trees - not my favorite thing to do.

In today's video, I head out to figure out what is going on with my landings. Every time I touch down, the airplane immediately pogos my nosewheel hard into the runway, no matter how much I try to hold the nose up. I'm sure it's the pilot and not the airplane, so I decide to go out and figure out what technique I need to use to properly (and gently!) land this airplane, consistently.

The Cozy MKIV is a Canard airplane, which is very different than most other airplanes. In this video I talk about the history of Canards, compare its aerodynamic function to a traditional airplane, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a Canard over a traditional airplane, which led me to decide to purchase this one!

Sandy is my airport next-door (hangar) neighbor, and has a nice little Grumman Cheetah. She had to fly it down to Middletown, OH for its annual inspection, and asked if I might fly her back home. I was glad to help out, and this flight is the result. This was Sandy's first time in an experimental airplane, she was very surprised at how fast we were flying!

"Don't Denver It!" The number of "John Denver" comments I have received since I bought this airplane is pretty surprising. Apparently, as soon as anyone sees a Canard of any kind, the first thought in their mind is "John Denver" - which is unfortunate. In this video, I go over what the real story was behind John Denver's unfortunate demise, demonstrate exactly what happened, and discuss how it applies to my airplane.

We head off from Cleveland to spend Labor Day weekend with friends on the Maine coast. Something completely impossible to do by car, we replace the 13-hour drive with a flight in the Cozy MKIV that takes only three hours and fifteen minutes of flight time. Join us on our trip to the coast, and see some of the beautiful sights!
The trip back, with less favorable winds, takes 3:45 - but still far better than driving!

This is the very first video of a brand new YouTube channel, all about Canard aircraft in general, and my Cozy MKIV in particular. I'll be posting videos about flying, maintenance, Canards and much more!

While taking off recently, my airplane did something very different: it unexpectedly rotated into the air before it was ready to fly, at too slow an airspeed - when heading directly towards 75 foot tall trees!
I show video of the incident, explain exactly what happened and what I did to prevent the crash, then use some hard data to identify exactly what happened - and what I need to do to ensure it never happens again.

I flew down to New Philadephia, Ohio to get my biannual pitot/static test performed. Everything went great...until the flight back: when I slowed down to enter the pattern at my home airport, I realized I had no elevator trim! This was very bad, as I had very heavy control stick forces at slow speed. In this video I show what went wrong, and then fix the problem!
