Disney Shake-Up Casts Marvel Comics' Autonomy Into Doubt. Marvel Entertainment being absorbed into Disney calls into question what the future of Marvel Comics will look like as part of the company.
Disney's firing of Marvel Entertainment Chairman Isaac "Ike" Perlmutter has received the lion's share of the attention of Disney's business moves today. However, somewhat lost in Permultter's firing was the fact that it was part of Disney absorbing Marvel Entertainment into Disney proper. This calls into question the future of Marvel Comics, which (along with Marvel Consumer Products) was essentially the only part of Marvel Entertainment left once Marvel's television and animation departments were removed. The two were merged into Marvel Studios in 2018 as part of some machinations to give Kevin Feige control over those divisions separately from Permultter; previously, the film division of Marvel Studios split off in 2015.
The official stance from Disney on Permultter's exit, as well as the company parting ways with Marvel Entertainment’s co-president Rob Steffens and chief counsel John Turitzin, is that it is part of a larger cost-cutting measure. According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, this will ultimately result in 7,000 Disney employees losing their jobs in an attempt to cut $5.5 billion in costs. With more layoffs looming, though, there is uncertainty around what will happen to Marvel Entertainment, as it is being absorbed into the larger Disney corporation. Marvel Comics will obviously continue publishing comics. The question is, what will the publishing look like without Marvel Entertainment existing as a separate entity.
One of the aspects of this move that could help Marvel Comics is the fact that Dan Buckley, who has been Marvel's Publisher since 2003, will maintain his role as Marvel Entertainment President. He will continue to report to Kevin Feige, which could mean some much-needed stability for Marvel Comics, as Buckley has been involved in the Comics division for 20 years. Having a veteran comic book connection could allow for the division to maintain its independence, as opposed to having someone outside the industry suddenly put in charge.

“Harry Had No F***ing Black Friends”, Marvel Star Slams ‘Harry Potter’ Casting
A Marvel star has thrown some serious shade at the Harry Potter casting.
Many fans expect that some characters will be portrayed by non-White actors in the reboot, especially following the West End play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (2016), in which Eswatini-born actress Noma Dumezweni played Hermione Granger, who was played by Emma Watson in the eight Harry Potter films.
These expectations also likely come as a result of other reboots featuring actors of color portraying main characters, such as Peter Pan and Wendy (2023) and The Little Mermaid (2023). Warner Bros. has also said its “making a concerted effort” to ensure the new Harry Potter casting is diverse, which suggests that they feel the films don’t have enough representation. And they aren’t alone, because African-American Hollywood star Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has now criticized the franchise.
In an interview with Inverse, while talking about his upcoming film Spark, which follows Claudette Colvin’s role in the Civil Rights Movement, the MCU star said that there were no opportunities for young Black actors in the Harry Potter films, while also criticizing The Lord of the Rings films for having the same problem. Here’s what he said:
“Harry Potter had no f***ing Black friends. Frodo walked across the entire universe and never met a Black dude. I want to see Frodo in the Hood, which if I ever do Saturday Night Live, is going to be a skit I’m going to do.”
While the Harry Potter casting is predominantly White, with JK Rowling on board as the upcoming reboot’s executive producer, who years ago suggested that Hermione could be a person of color in the books (upon which the upcoming series will be a “faithful adaptation”), it’s likely actors of color will portray some of the characters.
It’s also possible that the series will finally embrace Albus Dumbledore’s sexuality, although some efforts were made in the latest Fantastic Beasts film.
As for The Lord of the Rings, while the film series is entirely White, the Amazon Prime series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022) does feature a far more diverse cast.

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Trailer Has Fans Buzzing Over Ayo Edebiri's April O'Neil. Some people are criticizing April O'Neil's redesign for TMNT: Mutant Mayhem while others are loving her new look.
The Heroes in a Half-Shell are getting rebooted once again for the all-new animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. A new trailer has just been released for the film, revealing the unique animation style along with our first look at several of the main characters as they'll appear in the film. Along with the titular teenage turtles, the trailer also includes a peek at a new incarnation of April O'Neil, voiced by The Bear star Ayo Edebiri.
One character that has been given a redesign different from several of the previous adaptations is April, imagined in the CG-animated film as a Black woman. The subject of changing the skin color of fictional characters seems to always generate some kind of controversy online, and we've seen it as recently as the trailer for The Little Mermaid, and as expected, there have been some complaints posted to social media about presenting April O'Neil as Black in this new reboot.
As one tweet reads, "I know the attack on redheads is real, but come on! April O'Neil is white!"
Another tweet states, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem looks fun but did they just Jimmy Olsen/Wally West race swap April O’neil because she was a redhead/ginger? Who in Hollywood has a hate boner for gingers? lol Movie looks funny though!"
Meanwhile, others are criticizing the look of the character beyond her skin color. Some are saying she's been made to look "ugly," while others seem unhappy that the character is depicted as heavier than other versions of April O'Neil.
"As always people are pulling the racist card at any April O'Neil criticism (white 'activists' at that)," reads one tweet. "April is supposed to be beautiful, they could have given us a cute, black April. They made her ugly on purpose, race plays no role in that."
Directed by Jeff Rowe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem also features the voices of Nicolas Cantu (Leonardo), Micah Abbey (Donatello), Shamon Brown Jr. (Michaelangelo), Brady Noon (Raphael), Jackie Chan (Splinter), Seth Rogen (Bebop), John Cena (Rocksteady), Ice Cube (Superfly), Paul Rudd (Mondo Gecko), and Giancarlo Esposito (Baxter Stockman).
