Excerpts: Church Excesses and the rise of Reformist Preachers in the 14th Century
The Rise of Reformist Preachers during the 14th Century began as a direct result of ongoing war, famine, Church degeneracy and later, the Black Death sweeping through Europe in an apocalyptic experience that left many intellectuals despairing that it was the end of the world. Many viewed the abuse of power and privilege of the church (and the papal schism) as being directly responsible, so unsurprisingly, a number of academics and theologians began calling out the clergy for straying from their rightful path. Chief among these early reformist preachers was John Wycliffe and his Bohemian protégé, Jan Hus (John Huss). In this excerpt we look at some of the factors leading to religious reform protests of the time, and you can watch the full video on Jan Hus and the Perfect Medieval Storm here: https://youtu.be/qavGsly6y98 #janhus #johnhuss #johnwycliffe #medieval #blackdeath #reformation #pope If you enjoy my content, leave your suggestions and comments below, and please consider making a donation via PayPal or sign up as a Patreon supporter to help me continue making these unfunded educational videos:

In a previous video, we looked at the early history of the Falkland Islands; rival claims to its sovereignty and the status quo leading into the modern era. In this short extract from our full length video on Margaret Thatcher, we look at the emerging post colonial landscape and the political and economic triggers that led to the conflict between Argentina and the UK in 1982

The Suez Crisis of 1956 was triggered by the nationalization of the Suez Canal by Egypt's President Nasser, which angered the UK and France, as they relied heavily on the canal for their oil supplies- when Nasser finally acted to secure the canal, the UK and France, along with Israel, conspired to launch a military operation to regain control of Suez, without consulting the United States or informing the United Nations. On October 29, 1956, the Israeli army invaded the Sinai Peninsula, followed by British and French forces a few days later. The invasion was initially successful, and the forces quickly advanced towards the canal. However, the operation was met with international condemnation, and the United States, the Soviet Union, and other countries called for an immediate ceasefire. The Egyptians meanwhile decided that if they couldn’t have it, nobody would, so as the British and French troops came ashore the Egyptians scuttled dozens of huge tankers in the canal, rendering it impassable and useless till the following year – causing significant disruption to oil supplies and consequently crippling price hikes all across the globe. The Suez Crisis had a significant impact on the UK's international standing, and was seen by many as a turning point in the country's decline as a global power. The UK's involvement in the crisis was widely criticized, both domestically and internationally, and many saw it as evidence of the country's inability to adapt to the changing international landscape. Prime Minister Anthony Eden was criticised even from within his own party, and resigned as a result. The costs incurred in the failed campaign, the withdrawal of troops and compromised oil supply led to a serious economic impact on the British economy and a devaluation of the Pound sterling. It also accelerated the decolonisation process of British and French dominions around the globe, which several historians have criticised as being overly hurried and poorly managed, resulting in a succession of civil wars and humanitarian disasters throughout former dominions, particularly in Africa. The crisis also highlighted the growing divide between the UK and the United States, which had opposed the military intervention from the outset and openly sided with Egypt. Eisenhower’s government saw the crisis as an opportunity to assert its own leadership in the region, and played a key role in brokering a ceasefire and resolving the conflict, remaining the key regional player ever since.

St Catherine of Alexandria is, according to tradition, a Christian saint and virgin, who was martyred in the early fourth century at the hands of the emperor Maxentius. She was a noted scholar who became a Christian around the age of 14, converted hundreds of people to Christianity and was martyred around the age of eighteen. More than 1,100 years after Catherine's martyrdom, Joan of Arc identified her as one of the saints who appeared to and counselled her. When many people think of Africa, they visualise wide open spaces, incredible wildlife and colourful friendly people with vibrant cultures, costumes and music. We might also contemplate the tragedy of the African slave trade and the consequences of colonialism. But what if I told you there was one powerful African kingdom in particular, that, when they first came into contact with Europeans, voluntarily and enthusiastically transformed their entire civilisation almost overnight– adopting the language, religion, fashion and even feudal aristocratic customs of the Portuguese, establishing diplomatic embassies in Lisbon, Madrid and even the Vatican, training their own clergy and corresponding regularly with popes and monarchs across Europe as well as participating in the political machinations of a post-renaissance Europe at war with itself. Though their story ultimately was to come to a tragic end, it was full of political intrigue, amazon warrior queens, and a quest for power that was integral to the History of the West, particularly in the Americas, which was inexorably linked to the kingdom’s rise and fall. If you’re just a little bit curious about this powerful, deeply catholic kingdom in the darkest heart of Africa, then join us as we dive into the history of the Kingdom of Kongo; its troubled relationship with Portugal and its tragic role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade; whose incredible heroes would go on to inspire generations of their descendants, with stories of mighty Amazon warrior queens; and tales of the Brazilian Black Spartacus and his renegade kingdom of Palmares.

May 2021 marks the bicentenary of the death of French Emperor and ethnic Corsican, Napoleon Bonaparte. A military and political genius and champion of the French Revolution, he has been much maligned by history as a dictator, and precursor for Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini and other modern despots by victorious British, Bourbon and other European monarchies. Napoleon's achievements both on and off the battlefield changed the course of world history and ultimately, drove the reforms and changes that were to improve the quality of life and futures of countless nameless peasants and disenfranchised people across Europe and the New World. And yet, he is continuously described as "controversial", racist, misogynist and an evil megalomaniac by biased historians viewing his life from their own narrow perspectives and political agendas.

The Wesley brothers formed what was at first a club at Oxford University, where they and several colleagues systematically set about living a holy life through an organised set of practices. They received Communion every week, fasted regularly, abstained from alcohol, gambling and other addictive pleasures and made it a requirement to frequently visit the sick and the poor, as well as prisoners in gaol. The fellowship was branded "Methodist" by campus students because of the way the club used "rules" and "method" to go about their daily religious affairs. John took a liking to the initially derogatory taunt and eventually adopted it as the formal name of the movement. The Brothers eventually travelled to America, preaching and themselves coming under the influence of the Moravian Church and its strong spiritual heritage, which they conveyed back to England upon their return home. Wesley would go on to become a much loved preacher, advocating for women's rights as well as an end to slavery, becoming a fundamental source of inspiration to the abolitionist movement which would arise in his wake. Margaret Thatcher's father was a Wesleyan lay-preacher and the philosophy of this church made a huge impact on her personal and political thinking, such that it is impossible to understand her legacy properly, without knowing the fundamentals of the church she grew up in.

Most people are unaware that before his voyages of Pacific exploration, James Cook served as Master aboard a Naval vessel during the British assault on Quebec, and cut his teeth as a cartographer in the dangerous waters of Newfoundland. In this excerpt, we look at Cook's role in the assault on Quebec and the reputation he began to make for himself as a competent and invaluable commander in the Royal Navy. The Irish Potato famine of the 1840 is one of the most tragic chapters in its history, and much discussion has centred on British Culpability for the extent of the disaster. What most people don't know is that much of the prevailing philosophical ideology that influenced attitudes among the ruling classes was the direct result of Thomas Malthus demographic arguments about the nature of population growth. His work was so influential that both Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace studied him extensively such that the theory of Natural Selection drew inspiration from his work. History would ultimately prove him wrong, but the backlash came in the form of widespread reformist trade union activism, which Carl Marx, then travelling throughout London, used to crystallise his own socialist theories.
