US Greco-Roman National Team Leadership and Character Development show Episode #13
Rick and I discuss what it takes to be world class
To be the best in the world athletes need to do things differently.
Most people are mediocre at what they do for a reason. They are mediocre because they do the same things that others do. High performance means you have to have different expectations than everyone else.
If you want to become the best in the world you have to love what you are doing. You have to love what you are doing even when it’s hard and discouraging.
If you are doing what you love doing, follow your heart and the voice inside you encouraging faith and forward movement. Follow your bliss; you know that you are doing what you love if you would do it regardless of the outcome.
If this is your passion and you love what you are doing and you want to be the best there are some basic rules you must adhere to.
Get a coach, and follow the plan. World-class performers cannot follow the rules set by society they must do things differently. Listen to your coach and find out what its going to take. You must build a lifestyle around being true to yourself. If you're true to yourself, good things will follow, but there are no guarantees of results. The only guarantee is you will be happy, if you are doing what you love.
If what you're doing doesn't seem slightly crazy to you, and very crazy to other people, you're probably following the correct path. Being the best in the world is difficult: no practically impossible there will be struggle and sacrifice. It’s not going to be easy and don’t expect ease.
Obsession with a particular result may keep you from attaining your desired results. Your work will be forced rather than joy and love. I had to learn this lesson the hard way; I was on three teams and obsessed with getting the result. Soon as I stopped caring about the result and just focused on my training and the joy of being able to do what I love, I found success.
Everything meaningful in life is a marathon -- meant to test your commitment and will. Adam said the training for the worlds was grueling, but he expected it to be grueling anything worth while doing is not going to be easy. We have to learn to accept that we are not going to always be comfortable, and if we are comfortable then we are not growing. If you want it bad enough, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. Not one day but every day, consistently every day.
