PAST BOARD EXAM PROBLEMS
Structural Engineering & Construction
Situation 67
The flooring of a warehouse is made up of DT Joists as shown. The joists are simply supported on a span of 7.5m.
Give: A = 2x105 mm2
I = 1.88 x 109 mm4
The initial prestressed force is 745 kN located at 192 mm below the neutral axis. Loads: DL = 2.3 kPa, DL = 6.0 kPa
1. Determine the tensile stress due to the initial prestress force. (33.18)
2. Determine the maximum compressive stress at midspan of the beam due to the given loads and the prestress force based on the following conditions:
Loss of prestress = 18%
Beam unit weight is 24 kN/m3 (14.75)
3. Determine the additional superimposed load that the DT can carry such that the resulting tensile stress at the bottom fiber is zero. Consider 18% of stress. (14.77)
