Prince Albert Apple tree Blandford museum garden tour with the Knotman #nature #dorset
An excellent old culinary apple, discovered in 1841 and named for the Prince Consort, Malus domestica Lane's Prince Albert is a very ‘good do-er’, thriving on almost any soil, and a good choice for novice growers. The fruit is smaller than that of some cooking apples, slightly irregular in shape, and green with an orange-red flush; the juicy flesh has an excellent, sharp flavour, cooking down to a brisk, lemon-yellow purée. It is a compact tree, and a heavy and very reliable cropper. As a compact spur-bearer, it is easily trained; as an espalier, it looks lovely in flower and when fruiting. The pale pink blossom is good for bees and moths, the latter attracting bats into the garden.
