Ai Weiwei recreates Monet's water lilies out of 650,000 Lego bricks.
Claude Monet's iconic water lilies will be on display in the new Ai Weiwei exhibition opening in April at London's Design Museum. The massive replica, however, is not constructed from the Impressionist brushstrokes of the French artist, but rather from the studs of 650,000 Lego bricks in 22 distinct hues.
According to the museum, Ai's "Water Lilies #1" is about 50 feet wide, making it his largest Lego creation to date.
His depiction of Monet's Giverny lily ponds is serene, but a "black doorway" on the far right alludes to Ai's upbringing in China's Xinjiang province. The museum claims in a news release that the mysterious black Lego patch is the entrance to a secret underground lair where the artist and his father hid from the authorities in the 1960s.
Statement: "With 'Water Lilies #1,' I utilize a digital and pixelated language to merge Monet's Impressionist picture, which reminds me of Zenism in the East, with my father's and my own real-life experiences," Ai remarked. "The sturdy yet malleable nature of toy bricks reflects the features of language in our fast evolving era, when people's thoughts are constantly splitting apart," the designer writes.
Ai has employed everything from porcelain and film to found objects and pottery in his conceptual installations. Towards the decade's close, the artist and activist started constructing with Lego bricks.
Several of the subjects of Ai's vibrant, detailed 2014 show pieces are political prisoners or exiles. After Lego denied the artist's studio's request to purchase a large quantity of bricks for a new project, the artist received a great deal of publicity the following year. Censorship, he said (The Danish company later reversed its decision).
Members of the public and Ai's fanbase sent him Legos to console him throughout the uproar. At his next London exhibition, these blocks will form part of an installation titled "Untitled (Lego Incident)".
Other massive works at "Ai Weiwei: Making Sense" include 200,000 porcelain teapot spouts from the Song period and thousands of pieces of Ai's own sculptures that were damaged in 2018 when the city of Beijing tore down his studio.
The museum's head curator, Justin McGuirk, has commented that the scale of Ai's installations is "unsettling and affecting." "And while the visitor attempts to decipher the significance of these pieces, he or she is compelled to consider what it is that we cherish and what it is that we destroy."
We are proud to be the first museum to show this enormous, complex, and potent piece of art, as described by "Water Lillies #1" curator Sean McGuirk: "On the one hand, (Ai Weiwei) has made it personal by putting in the door of the desert home he grew up in, and on the other, he has made it impersonal by using a language of modular Lego blocks."

What made you approach art and become an artist? (events, feelings, experiences...)?
Art has always been a part of our family - my sisters and I drew, my grandfather's brothers painted pictures. When I was child, I came to the village for the summer to my grandparents and visited my grandfather's brother, there he hid a huge painting of a naked woman behind a closet. I liked to look behind the closet and tried to see the painting. I think that they hid painting for the arrival of the grandchildren.
But my older sister Irina Bogdanova discovered in me a real love for art and a desire to become an artist. Irina has been drawing since childhood and I drew with her. And once she showed me paintings by Boris Vallejo and I fell in love. Since then, I dreamed of learning to paint like Boris Vallejo and entering the history of art.
What is your artistic journey, techniques and subjects you have experimented with to date?
I've been drawing for as long as I can remember and it's the only thing I really liked. I started with graphics and my favorite tool became a blue ballpoint pen. During my school years, I gradually started experimenting with gouache and watercolor, and only at the university did I discover oil paints and sculpture.
After graduating from the university, I moved to Kyiv and immersed myself in the study of computer graphics. I became a 3D sculptor and took part in the creation of games, cartoon series and the full-length Ukrainian cartoon "Gulliver Returns" from "95 Animation Studio" - this is my pride.
But I always wanted to paint and tell my own stories in painting. That's why I started painting again. The central theme of all my paintings has always been women.
What are 3 aspects that differentiate you from other artists, making your work unique?
Not all art appeals to me because of gloomy colors and often ugly images. I try to give people positive emotions with my paintings, so I use positive colors for my paintings, for example, the blue color that I often use as a background for portraits is the blue sky.
I like to convey the emotions of the heroines of my paintings, and a smile is my favorite emotion, because it has a huge range of shades - happiness, laughter and even sadness.

The sealed windows, the ceiling that becomes a source of light, and the white walls create a space that is closed off from the outside world. This is because the art, which takes shape and life within it, needs to be free to express itself, without the distractions of the outside world. This is something that only the hermetic container, called a "white cube," can do, allowing masterpieces to be kept in a pristine environment. This is the story of some of the effects modernism had on exhibitions, which were turned into minimalist white boxes where works of the same color could easily be confused with the walls, even though Vasily Kandisky's words show how white, in its "muteness," can "strike us as a great silence that seems absolute." In fact, there are a number of masterpieces that help us understand the evocative, symbolic, etc. power of the color in question, which can stand out strongly from a wall of the same color, both because of what it means on its own and because it has a lot of little-known shades. As proof of these last points, I'd like to call attention to the white works by Kazimir Severinovi Malevi, Piero Manzoni, Alberto Burri, and Lucio Fontana. I'd also like to point out that while white was mostly used in the robes of gods in early Christian art and in small tonal patches in Impressionism, it was tried out on large canvases in Abstract, Conceptual, and Minimalist art to create media content. Starting with Malevi, his Suprematist Composition gives us an example of what is meant by the above statement: White on White is an oil on canvas painting from 1918 in which a white square floats lightly in a white field. The painting shows "an impersonal" and unreal geometric abstraction, but it also shows the hand of the artist in the subtle changes in color and the non-symmetrical geometric figure. This way of thinking about the color of purity and peace makes it clear that the master was interested in technology and the airplane. In fact, the use of white takes us back to the sky that the airplanes crossed, inviting the viewer to lose himself in a transcendental and infinite dimension that is the home of higher feelings and the birthplace of a utopian world of pure form. A year later, the artist wrote a statement that summed up these feelings. In it, he said that he had "overcome the covering of the colored sky" and was now swimming "in the white and free abyss," where he could see infinity.

What pushed you to approach art and to become an artist? (events, feelings, experiences...)
During Lock-Down, I felt the need to find an outlet and as this creativity had been dormant within me for some time, I was given the chance to express myself.
What is your artistic background, the techniques and subjects you have experimented with so far?
I have always been a collector of contemporary art and toys and this opportunity allowed me to combine these two worlds. To date, I mainly make sculptures in epoxy resin, but also canvas, dibond+acrylic and many other things.
What are the three aspects that differentiate you from other artists and make your work unique?
I am a chemical engineer who worked as a cocoa broker for 20 years and can finally express my creativity. I think the combination of these three aspects can characterize something special.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I am very curious, I observe a lot and I think a lot. In my work, I have always had to find "solutions" to the problems of my clients and the fact of being able to seek "artistic solutions" to the world around me fascinates and stimulates me.
What is the intention of your art? What visions, sensations or feelings do you want to evoke in the viewer?
Like many people, I have been in love with bricks since childhood and noticed that they are one of the few immortal toys. I also wanted to try and make many other toys from the 70s and 80s immortal by including them in this form. I would like to trigger memories and lightness in my peers and curiosity in new generations. The ultimate goal is to give additional tools for both generations to interact and play with art using it as a bridge to express positive feelings.
What is the process of creating your works? Spontaneous or with a long preparatory process (technical, inspiration from art classics or other)?
I am strongly inspired by the classics but also by more contemporary art. Today we are immersed in social media and are therefore constantly challenged and inspired. The joy I feel creating is really the combination of all these influences. I like to combine the classic with the world of contemporary art toys....

Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson will create his first ever outdoor permanent installation in the UK. Seawater will fill a steel basin that will be placed on the coast of West Cumbria in northwest England. The collaboration between Eliasson and novelist Robert Macfarlane resulted in a project now titled Your Dawn Destination.
Deep Time: Commissions for the Lake District Coast, an ambitious new public art project incorporating a new piece by Eliasson, will launch this summer. The Deep Time initiative is being led by Copeland Borough Council and funded by the Coastal Communities Fund, Arts Council England, and the "Six: Social Impact, Multiplied" program at nuclear waste management business Sellafield, a government-sponsored fund for rehabilitation totaling £2.2 million.
Eliasson faced competition from the likes of Turner Prize winner Rachel Whiteread, collaborator Tom Emerson architect Roger Hiorns, and Dutch designer Piet Oudolf. One of the judges was Clare Lilley, director of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
As the tide flows in twice a day, Eliasson plans to fill an elliptical steel basin with sea water. An official project description states, "The location planned for the plan is in southern Copeland, close to the town of Silecroft. It's a massive piece of art that takes advantage of the beach, the tides, the sea water, and the light."
Guests can observe the steel pool, which extends into the mud flats, from a platform constructed from a series of rings mounted on supports. The Cumbrian rock art inspiration rings form a complete circle around the pool. The statement claims that the resulting pool operates "like a mirror," reflecting the sun, moon, and sky. To paraphrase: "That's a stolen sky over the desert."
According to a statement released by the artist, "The piece is a simple reflection of what is already there—the beach, the water, the sky, the plants and animals—reframed within a space that allows self-discovery in a deep-time perspective."
In addition to these large-scale installations, the Deep Time project will also have seaside exhibitions of smaller-scale pieces by artists such as Marcus Coates, Susan Philipsz, Martin Boyce, Atelier Van Lieshout, Yelena Popova, and Ryan Gander. Whitehaven Harbour, home to one of the country's oldest surviving coal wharves, will soon get a brand new addition thanks to Philipsz. Boyce plans to create a landmark sculpture for Silecroft Beach. Five new writers have been commissioned for the show, and Himali Singh Soin is one of them.

New York's Whitney Museum will no longer be led by Adam Weinberg. After 20 years, Scott Rothkopf was picked as his successor.
New York's Whitney Museum released a statement on Wednesday saying that Adam Weinberg, the museum's director for the past 20 years, will be stepping down.
According to the press announcement, Weinberg will leave the museum on October 31st, when his contract is over. Currently serving as senior deputy director and head curator, Scott Rothkopf will succeed Weinberg.
The Whitney Museum of American Art has named Weinberg its new director emeritus. What he planned to do after that was not specified in the museum's announcement.
Since joining the Whitney in 1989, when he was hired to head up its Equitable Center location in Midtown Manhattan, he has spent his whole professional life working for the museum. With the exception of his time as director of the American Center in Paris and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts, he has remained primarily at the museum.
The Whitney Museum, under Weinberg's direction, relocated in 2015 from its previous Madison Avenue location (built by Marcel Breuer) to its current Meatpacking District location. The new $422 million Renzo Piano-designed museum building has won widespread acclaim.
Weinberg's completion of that shiny new structure was likely a primary consideration when the board first recruited him. Maxwell Anderson, who held the position before him, resigned in 2003 when the board scrapped an expansion plan designed by architect Rem Koolhaas that would have cost $200 million and would have added space to the museum's iconic Breuer building on Madison Avenue.
The programming at the museum has received a lot of attention since it reopened, as it is widely credited with revitalizing the institution. Important exhibitions on topics such as immersive video installations, Puerto Rican art following Hurricane Maria, and figurative painting have been shown at the museum since 2015.
Recently, the Whitney Museum has renovated Roy Lichtenstein's former studio, where the Independent Study Program is housed, and installed a permanent installation by David Hammons.
The Whitney Museum reported that during Weinberg's tenure as director, the number of annual visitors tripled from 400,000 to 1.2 million in the years prior to the pandemic, and the endowment increased from $40 million to $400 million.
The museum hosted almost 300 shows and 9 biennials between 2003 and 2023, some of which were controversial.
Rothkopf joined the Whitney as a curator in 2009, and she soon rose to prominence thanks to her groundbreaking exhibitions of works by artists such as Glenn Ligon, Wade Guyton, Jeff Koons, Mary Heilmann, and Laura Owens. In addition, he worked on the team that organized "America Is Hard to See," the Whitney Museum's inaugural exhibition at its new Meatpacking District home. Back in 2015, this show first debuted.
As of the same year, Rothkopf had replaced Donna De Salvo as the museum's main curator. In 2018, Rothkopf was promoted to the position of senior deputy director. When Rothkopf was chief curator, he employed key personnel like Rujeko Hockley, Marcela Guerrero, and Adrienne Edwards.
Before joining the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, Rothkopf worked as a senior editor at Artforum and a curator at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Ovid, a Roman poet who lived from about 43 B.C. to 17 A.D. and was one of the best writers in Latin, tells the story of Narcissus's "love" meeting in his famous Metamorphoses, an epic-mythological poem that aims to pass on to future generations many mythological stories and stories from Greek and Roman classicism. In fact, between verses 413 and 467 of the play, a 16-year-old boy who was used to rejecting every suitor with pride falls hopelessly in love with a handsome boy who, in a "emulative" way, returned his passionate gaze. Narcissus soon realized that he was attracted to his own reflection in a puddle. It was the first time he had seen himself, and it was the last time he would ever see it again. It is impossible to make more than one of us to find our sweet half, even though many people would like to. It is an oil on canvas that shows a young man who is enraptured by his own beauty and what happens to him shortly after, which is bad because he loves himself too much. In fact, the Italian master chose to show the moment when the young man, who is dressed in clothes from the seventeenth century, sees his reflection in a dark place.
