Pamela Gross, a former CNN producer and a close confidante of the late Barbara Walters, fondly recalls a memorable evening when Barbara extended an invitation to Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. Gathered in her elegant living room, a splendid piano provided the centerpiece for an enchanting post-dinner musical interlude. Barbara, along with Sarah and Matthew, harmoniously serenaded their fortunate guests with timeless melodies. It was an extraordinary and unforgettable night, a testament to Barbara's exceptional way of living.

The celebrated journalist, who passed away in December 2022 at the age of 93, cultivated a circle of friends that included luminaries like Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller, Hugh Jackman, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. They regularly convened at her Upper East Side residence for intimate dinners and stylish soirées. Now, the focus of the estate auction titled "Barbara Walters: American Icon," organized by Bonhams in partnership with Walters' daughter, Jacqueline Danforth, encompasses not only the meticulously curated interior decor of her home, masterfully overseen by the renowned designer Mario Buatta but also includes treasured jewelry and personal items cherished by Walters. The online auction is slated to run from October 29 to November 7, with a live auction event taking place on November 6 at Bonhams' New York showroom. Proceeds from the auction will be allocated to Walters' preferred charitable causes, although specific charities were not disclosed by the auction house.

The auction comprises over 300 items that offer a glimpse into Barbara Walters' aspiration for a life characterized by grace and refinement. Her diverse collection includes artworks by renowned painters such as John Singer Sargent, John Whorf, and William Merritt Chase. Morgan Martin, the head of American art at Bonhams, aptly describes the collection as a "constellation of stars," with Sargent's masterpiece shining the brightest. Barbara's connection with these artworks extended beyond appreciation; they held deeply personal significance. For instance, the John Whorf painting, which portrayed the Boston Public Gardens and graced the wall above her bed, evoked memories of her upbringing in Boston, a touching connection to her mother. Sargent's "Egyptian Woman (Coin Necklace)," painted in 1891, is estimated to command a price between $1.2 million and $1.8 million, while Whorf's "Swan Boat, Boston Public Gardens" from the 1950s carries an estimated value of $10,000 to $15,000.
