Bitcoin was designed for self-custody. If you are relying on a 3rd party (custodian) to hold your keys, you are taking on counter-party risk (custodian, custodian's insurance, etc). When Bitcoiners don't hold their own private keys, it leads to unnecessary centralization, which is a threat to the ecosystem. Both government attacks and hacker attacks on Bitcoin are made easier when most of it is being held in giant centralized honey pots. MakerDAO and DAI began as a clever idea for an algorithmic stablecoin, but they have become increasingly captured both by insiders, as well as by regulated institutions like Circle and Coinbase. As more and more of the collateral behind DAI is regulated, centralized stablecoins like USDC, it becomes increasingly easy to freeze the underlying collateral and cause liquidations across DeFi Land.
