Here is another short clip of my MTH Premier 4-8-4 "Santa Fe" 2900 class Northern and a Premier "BNSF" AC4400CW . As mentioned before often on modern railfan trips with steam power, there is usually a Diesel-electric Loco lashed up as a helper and to supply electrical power for the coaches. I thought of a "what if" Fan trip of a Santa Fe "2900" Steam loco and a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Diesel from 2010. You'll have to wait a minute for the train to come around. The 4-8-4 is a Protosound 2 upgrade I installed myself! Those are 2 Lionel Burlington Route GP-30s with TMCC in the siding.

At 5pm on 3/27/2013, the Iowa Interstate #710 & 717 derailed heading into a local industry in Henry, Illinois. There was no damage, and no injuries to the train or crew. The cause was determined to be Industry Owned defective tract. It was NOT IAIS track.

Illinois Valley's Midwest NMRA meet was in Springfield, Illinois 2012. While touring the layouts around town, I stopped by to see Mr. Gene Heflin's G-scale layout. I have to say that Gene and His wife are the nicest people- and very hospitable! The Layout was fantastic, full of dioramas which brought it all to life! A small N-scale train, filling in for a circus miniuature riding train, a rising hot air balloon, and even a tram going up into a picture of mountains- just a really cool play ground for train lovers of all scales! So sit back and enjoy Mr. Heflin's G-scale layout from the Midwest NMRA convention in Springfield, Illinois!

Wednesday, 3-28-12, was an early morning call from my friend who works for IAIS. The 513 had come through Bureau Junction, Illinois on the nights of 25th and 26th, but those were bad photo ops as it was at night. So this call today was great! I met my friend at the Hennepin Crossing (who was engineering the 513 on a NS coal run). He brought me over to the 513 so I could get some cool stills up close. I then waited for them to pull out- We also pass the area near Tiskilwa were the October derailment occurred. Note the lack of foliage, gone from the fire and the new Ballast laid down. I tried something different: I photographed through the "Fish eye" lens to try a different effect- Its subtle but noticeable- I also included the stills in with the video: Please tell me what y'all think! I was able to ride along side Iowa Interstate's ES44AC #513 in Rock Island colors. Sunday, March 13th 2011, I followed alongside for about 5 or 6 miles. The speed was 40. My camera man had to hold the camera inside the car because sticking the camera out the window caused too much wind-roar. So sorry for the car's Window frame. At about 1:50 into the video the Horn and bell sounds awesome!!
This was a rare occasion for 513 because it was in Peoria, IL, for a coal run to Ceder Rapids, IA. 513 usually runs the Council Bluffs-Blue Island route. So it was nice to see the Rock Island colors on the old Peoria Rocket! My trip started in Bureau Junction, Illinois. and ends in Annawan, IL. I'm slowed by having to stop at a stop sign just before the crossing- so I missed the train at the crossing.
This day seemed to be a popular one for the 513 as I was constantly negotiating around the "paparazzi" of the rail-fan world. These folks were standing on the tracks and on IAIS's property, blocking the intersections, passing in no passing zones and speeding. When I photograph trains (or anything for that matter) I like to be secluded, out of the way, and in a natural setting. I was able to get good shots though and despite the poor lighting conditions from the mostly cloudy sky I think it came out pretty well!

Having just recently received my new BNSF AC4400CW I was both pleased and annoyed. First off let me say that MTH has out done themselves again. This is a beautiful loco that has all the bells and whistles. Runs like a charm and has great up-to-standard detailing one would expect from a "Premier" product. However, the factory-installed sound file came with the all too known "annoying" horn that is of the "new GEVOs"... This is an AC4400cw? Also- like the PS2 upgrades I have performed, I wanted the most out of my lighting. There are two areas of model train lighting that are pet-peeves with me. 1) head and ditch lights are not bright enough and so are not prototypical, 2) the number boards also act as cab interior lights (or in some cases totally flood out cab lights if installed). So, after having performed several PS2 upgrades I felt I was experienced enough to try a little light modification.
First the Cab lights vs. number boards. I prefer to have a dark cab but illuminated number boards- to keep the number boards from flooding the cab with light, I built, with heavy paper card, shrouds around each light bulb inside for each number board. I had to vent the area so I punched little pin-sized holes for cooling. This allowed a little light to escape to the cab but it was totally manageable.
As for the Head and ditch lights, I basically popped the plastic lenses out of the body and ditch light shrouds. This allowed the actual light bulb themselves to be exposed, thus making for brighter lights. A little hot-glue secured them in place. I also built a shroud, around the head light to keep it from flooding the cab- thus keeping the cab dark.
As all of us train fans know, the head and ditch lights of a real train are so bright they blind us up close, and can illuminate terrain for up to a mile away. Now, in a 100 percent totally dark room, my model trains can do the same- having measured a "scale mile" on my floor layout the bulbs produce scale prototypical illumination on my room walls up to a scale-mile away. And they look proto- typically bright up close. Pretty cool!
