Copping their name from ***[William S. Burroughs](https://cutt.ly/knKjvcv)*** euphemism for ejaculation, ***"Thin White Rope"*** was founded in Davis, California in 1984. Although the time and place of their formation aligned them with both the Paisley Underground and roots rock movements, the group quickly staked out its own musical territory, divining their own unique brand of dark, surreal, desert rock.
***"Thin White Rope"*** was led by singer/guitarist ***[Guy Kyser](https://cutt.ly/UnHksbT)***, whose harsh, tightly coiled vocals and unsettling lyrics combined to give the band its edge; in the group's first incarnation, Kyser was joined by guitarist ***[Roger Kunkel](https://cutt.ly/ynHkhgk)***, bassist ***Kevin Staydohar*** (soon replaced by ***Steven Tesluk***), and drummer ***Jozef Becker***.
***"The Ruby Sea"*** is the band's fifth full-length album, released under the ***"Frontier Records"*** in 1991.
The album was recorded at ***”Fidelity Studios”***, Studio City, CA which is near ***”Universal Studios”***, east end of ***”Ventura Blvd”***.
Originally, ***[Butch Vig](https://cutt.ly/4mqnciz)*** wanted to produce the record, just before he was hired to produce ***”[Nirvana’s](https://cutt.ly/Ymqnm0t)”*** ***”Nevermind”***. He wanted the band to come to his studio in **Madison**, but they weren’t keen on spending a few weeks in Wisconsin, and decided to do it in LA where they knew people and could have a good time while being there.
***"The Ruby Sea"*** follows in the progression that most of ***”Thin White Rope's”*** albums followed, slowly shedding their more blatantly psychedelic influences and polishing their sound as a surreal and chilling rock band. It’s a cold and dramatic slice of desert rock that manages to be gripping more often than it is simply campy.
The album takes the listener on a tense, turmoil-filled journey, feels like the equivalent of driving all day, looking for accommodations in a tiny two-horse town and then hitting the local roadhouse for a cold beer. What ***”Thin White Rope”*** accomplished on this album was to create an aural roadmap of their world. And they certainly did it.
***”Midwest Flower”*** is the fifth song on ***”Thin White Rope”*** fourth album, ***"***"[The Ruby Sea](https://cutt.ly/RmurPu0)"***, released under the ***"Frontier Records"*** in 1991.

***"The Cranberries"*** were an Irish rock band formed in Limerick, Ireland. Originally named the ***"Cranberry Saw Us"***, the band formed in 1989 by lead singer Niall Quinn, guitarist ***[Noel Hogan](https://cutt.ly/mvPT5VJ)***, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. Quinn was replaced as lead singer by ***[Dolores O'Riordan](https://cutt.ly/nvPYv31)*** in 1990, and they changed their name to the ***"Cranberries"***.
Then, they performed their first UK tour opening for the British band ***”Moose”*** throughout a series of three weeks. “***The Cranberries***” received more letters expressing interest from ***Virgin***, ***EMI***, ***Imago***, ***CBS***, and ***Warner***, which led Hogan brothers to quit their jobs.
***”The Cranberries”*** headed back into the studio in Dublin in March 1992 to restart working on their first LP with ***[Stephen Street](https://cutt.ly/8vSpqEg)***, who had previously worked with the ***Smiths***.
***"To the Faithful Departed"*** is the ***"Cranberries"*** third studio album, released on 30 April 1996. The album was made in memory of ***Denny Cordell*** and ***Joe O'Riordan*** (vocalist ***Dolores O'Riordan's*** grandfather), who had both died that year.
The album is a dark and honest take on mortality, violence, loss, and love as the redeeming power for the broken humanity. But, it seems that critics of the time could not handle the sonic diversity the band articulated in this dense project. Musically it is brave, experimental, raw and very well crafted. O'Riordan's vocals mutate through the album, adapting to each piece to unite both grave and cradle, alongside impressive epic arrangements and intimate quiet moments.
Not an album for "background" sonic decoration, rather a work to come to and contemplate, consider, question and redeem.
***”Forever Yellow Skies”*** is the sixth song on the Cranberries third album ***”[To the Faithful Departed](https://cutt.ly/Gbh2nW3)”***.

# ***The Stone Roses Biography***
***The Stone Roses*** were an English rock band formed in **[Manchester](https://cutt.ly/pEJ1ytv)** in 1983. One of the pioneering groups of the ***[Madchester movement](https://cutt.ly/CEJ1skE)*** in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band's classic and most prominent lineup consisted of vocalist ***[Ian Brown](https://cutt.ly/VEJ1fkt)***, guitarist ***[John Squire](https://cutt.ly/uEJ1jrj)***, bassist ***[Mani](https://cutt.ly/EEJ1lyI)*** and drummer ***[Reni](https://cutt.ly/AEJ1xN4)***.
Meshing '60s-styled guitar pop with an understated '80s *dance beat*, the ***Stone Roses*** defined the *British guitar pop* scene of the late '80s and early '90s.
***The Stone Roses*** emerged from the remains of ***English Rose***, a Manchester-based band formed by schoolmates ***Squire*** and ***Brown***.
The group began playing warehouses around *Manchester*, cultivating a dedicated following rather quickly. Around this time, the group was a cross between classic British '60s *guitar pop* and *heavy metal*, with touches of *goth rock*.
In December 1986 they recorded their first demo as a four-piece, including the first studio recordings of “***[Sugar Spun Sister](https://cutt.ly/oEIrEVR)***” and “***[Elephant Stone](https://cutt.ly/REIrbPq)***”. By the time the group's sound had changed considerably, with chiming guitar hooks and a strong melody, alienating some of their old fans, but attracting many new ones.
> Again, in 1994. ***The Stone Roses*** create a dense tapestry of interweaving guitars and pulsing bass grooves, but there's no denying that ***"Second Coming"*** is a bit of a letdown. None of the songs are quite as strong as the best on their debut, but there is plenty of good music on the band's much-delayed second record.
> While the songs occasionally take a back seat to the grooves, several tracks - ***"[Ten Storey Love Song](https://cutt.ly/hEIu943)"***, ***"[Begging You](https://cutt.ly/UEIiqZP)"***, ***"[Tightrope](https://cutt.ly/sEIieCk)"***, ***"[How Do You Sleep](https://cutt.ly/1EIiiCg)"*** and ***"[Love Spreads](https://cutt.ly/BEIipyr)"*** rank as true classics.
>
> It might not be the long-awaited masterpiece it was rumored to be, but ***“Second Coming”*** is a fine sophomore effort.

# ***"Lush" Biography***
One of the first bands to have been described with the *"shoegazing"* label, were an English alternative band formed in ***[London](https://cutt.ly/GQCIBch)*** in 1987. The original ***“Lush”*** line-up consisted of ***[Miki Berenyi](https://cutt.ly/4QCI0hj)*** (vocals, guitar), ***[Emma Anderson](https://cutt.ly/pQCI94G)*** (vocals, guitar), ***[Steve Rippon](https://cutt.ly/5QCObEV)*** (bass) and ***[Chris Acland](https://cutt.ly/aQCI4A2)*** (drums).
***[Phil King](https://cutt.ly/gQCOh1X)*** replaced ***Rippon*** in 1991. ***Meriel Barham***, the original lead vocalist left almost immediately, eventually joining ***“[Pale Saints](https://cutt.ly/NQC1jGo)”***. When a replacement could not be found, guitarist ***Miki*** stepped up to the mic.
The band, initially named the ***"Baby Machines"***, were inspired by the garage rock scene of the ***"[Nuggets](https://cutt.ly/hQC0sUW)”*** series", ***"[Cocteau Twins](https://cutt.ly/bQC0hPF)"***, ***"[Siouxsie and the Banshees](https://cutt.ly/cQC0c8G)"***, the ***"[Beach Boys](https://cutt.ly/bQC0S95)"*** and the ***''[Byrds](https://cutt.ly/hQC0G0V)``***.
> On their fourth album ***“Lovelife”***, the band moved away from their earlier *dream pop* and *shoegazing* style and embraced a more *Britpop*-oriented sound.
> From the circular melody of the opening "[Ladykillers](https://cutt.ly/MQBVC6t)" it's clear that “Lush” had been influenced by the direct, jagged pop of “[Elastica](https://cutt.ly/EQBV2wF)”, but the band also has reached back into '60s pop. All of the ballads on ***“Lovelife”*** are rooted in the hazy dream pop of the early '90s, but they are given stylish, mod arrangements complete with muted brass.
>
> ***“Lush”*** had completed touring for the year and was on break when ***Chris Acland***, suffering from depression, had unexpectedly hung himself in his parent's home on October 17, 1996. Devastated by the loss, the remaining members of ***“Lush”*** dropped out of the public eye.
> With the chemistry that made up the band shattered, the remaining members made it official, with the announcement in 1998 that the band was no more.

***"R.E.M."*** was an American rock band from ***[Athens, Georgia](https://cutt.ly/NmRkghQ)***, formed in 1980 by drummer ***[Bill Berry](https://cutt.ly/AmRklXQ)***, guitarist ***[Peter Buck](https://cutt.ly/ymRkcq5)***, bassist ***[Mike Mills](https://cutt.ly/CmRknrO)***, and lead vocalist ***[Michael Stipe](https://cutt.ly/lmRkQn5)***, who were students at the University of Georgia.
Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern.
While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, ***"R.E.M."*** brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. The band marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock, and inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom.
A dark, moody rumination on American folk, R.E.M.’s ***”Fables of the Reconstruction”*** is creepy, rustic psychedelic folk, filled with eerie sonic textures. Some light breaks through occasionally, such as the ridiculous collegiate blue-eyed soul of ***"[Can't Get There From Here](https://cutt.ly/RmPYGP0)", but the group's trademark ringing guitars and cryptic lyrics have grown sinister, giving even sing-alongs like ***"[Driver 8](https://cutt.ly/LmAKIlK)"*** an ominous edge.
Album is more inconsistent than its two predecessors, but the group does demonstrate considerable musical growth, particularly in how perfectly it evokes the strange rural legends of the South.
***Peter Buck***, in the liner notes of the remaster, says it best. *“It’s a doomy, psycho record, dense and atmospheric. It creates its own little world, illogical but compelling”.*
***”Life And How To Live It”*** is the fourth song on the band’s third studio album ***"[Fables Of The Reconstruction](https://cutt.ly/FmPYvgi)"***, released on ***”[I.R.S. Records](https://cutt.ly/rmRk1BH)”*** on June 10, 1985. Album producer was the ***[Joe Boyd](https://cutt.ly/SmOhHt1)***, and it's a concept album with ***"[Southern Gothic](https://cutt.ly/YmOhZkR)"*** themes and characters.
