Donbass-refugees-find-shelter-in-a-Russian-church
Russia accepted 1,5 million refugees from Donbass and Southeastern Ukraine in 2022. Russia built refugee camps, but they can’t accommodate all people. So, the church decided to help, offering a shelter. Father Aleksandr invited a Donbass family to live in his church residence. He offered them all the help he is capable of to forget the horrors they lived through. Today father Aleksandr provides aid for three women and their kids. ‘You look at the children’s faces, their smiles, their laughter and you realise you are fulfilling the most important mission,’ tells the priest.

“I had a ladle and a loaf of bread for the borsch. I had to feed them! I came and said, ‘Hey, guys, dinner’s ready!’ They said, ‘Go away, you idiot! They’re shooting at us!’” Tatyana was almost killed when she brought dinner to the Donbass militia.
Like many other people of Donbass, Tatyana didn’t leave her home in 2014. Shelling by the Ukrainian troops put her life in constant danger, but she refused to become a refugee. Instead, Tatyana continued her routine, speaking about shrapnel and bullets as ordinary stuff.

'You know the War Crimes Court, the Hague War Crimes Tribunal. Many NATO officials, military officials from the United States will see their day in court, the Judgement day', says Zak Novak, a Donbass volunteer fighter from Serbia. In the 90s, Zak Novak witnessed NATO’s involvement in the Kosovo war. He was born in New York, but his Serbian roots manifested themselves. He is convinced the alliance played a significant role in destroying his country.
In 2015 he arrived in Donetsk as a military journalist. Zak insists NATO and the USA are responsible for the destruction of the Donbass too. He says the West is recreating the same scenario in Ukraine it had tested in Yugoslavia. This is why Zak enlisted in the Donbass militia. He knows all too well what it feels like to witness your people die and your home destroyed.

At the Nedoslov Theatre for the Deaf in Moscow, partially and completely deaf actors put on sign language interpretations of classic stories for a mixed audience of the hearing impaired and unimpaired. The performers are graduates of the Russian State Special Institute of Arts who want to stay in the arts even though they have to work mundane jobs.

RTD meets hearing impaired actors and those who help them find ways of expressing their pent-up creativity through gestures and dance. The confidence this gives them leads them to branch out into “popping” breakdancing or even to become pop sensations like the deaf twin heartthrobs. These deaf performers are proof that words are very unnecessary when everything you ever wanted is right here, in your arms.
