Now, applying the insights of our Almighty and Returning King, look at a quick survey of what that means in the 17 verses of Revelation 6. The Horsemen of the Apocalypse Seal # 1: The White Horse & Rider is that global deception, false peace, and prosperity, and the rise of that superman called the Antichrist. The Bible does not say how long this period lasts but it could last up to 42 months since the Antichrist is only allowed to do his evil for 42 months. What all happens during this first seal? The Antichrist rises as a superman in the world scene. He solves the Aran-Israeli problem (Dan. 9:27) by making a peace agreement/covenant. Then he allows Israel to build a Temple (Rev. 11:1). That may take up to 42 months. Seal # 2: The Red Horse & Rider is the rapid spread of the Revived Roman Emperor’s widening conquest of humanity through bloodshed and war, in which God tells us that he “takes peace” (v. 4). The "great sword" is the same word that is used for a Roman Legionnaire’s smaller, battle sword used for close-in warfare. So this is killing, warfare, and death from fighting. Seal # 3: The Black Horse & Rider is the spread of famine and scarcity. Upheaval, unrest, and warfare disrupt global food supply chains and there is widespread starvation. Seal # 4: The Pale Horse & Rider is the horrific duo of Death and Hades. Death takes the body and the Grave or Hades takes the soul. The means of such death across the world will be all of the warfare and famine of the second and third seals, plus the addition of most likely pestilences and plagues called “beasts”. All told the first half of the Tribulation’s seven-year (Daniel’s last week of the 70) is a net loss of one in four humans. Seal # 5: The Prayers of the Martyrs are unleashed. Just as our prayers for God’s Kingdom to come are going to be reflected in His wrath during the Tribulation, here we see those who have been slain for their witness for Christ. They are in heaven, so they are perfected, so nothing they do is wrong or sinful. It is righteous in Heaven to ask God to judge the evildoers of this Earth. The martyrs pray, and God powerfully responds. Those prayers break forth in the next seal. As if a global dictator, global wars, famines, pestilences, and death were not enough, now we see God’s Wrath in action. All of the troubles of the Tribulation so far were generated by humans. Now comes a little taste of the Wrath of God. Seal # 6: The Wrath of God is unleashed and the whole earth shakes. What an awful time that will be. God unleashed six forms of wrath and touches every level of humanity. Look at the exact wording John uses. WHAT DOES GOD SAY SPECIFICALLY? Look with me at this incredible summary of all specifics God has revealed about His Chosen People of Destiny, the Jews. Now, feel the impact of God's Words to a man standing out in the sands of the Middle East, in a Land called Canaan. God spoke in Genesis 15 and said, I am giving this Land to your children forever as a testimony to all the World, that I AM GOD! This may be one of the most important studies we have ever undertaken, so feel free to trace these points and verses in your Bibles as we go along! 1. God stakes His reputation on people He identified as His chosen people of destiny, the Jews, the descendants of Abraham, and He named them Israel. God picked one man in Ur of the Chaldees and asked him to walk hundreds of miles through the desert to a land filled with powerful kingdom states (Genesis 11-12); and there in a series of revelations, the Almighty God of the Universe solemnly swore to this man a nation would descend from him that would be the Chosen People of Destiny (Genesis 13, 15). Those people are the Jewish People, the Israelites, or as I like to call them God’s Chosen People of Destiny (Deuteronomy 7:6-7). Deuteronomy 7:6-7 “For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth. 7 The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; 2. God promised to give land to His chosen people of destiny the Jews with clearly defined boundaries (Genesis 12:1; 13:15; 15:7, 18-21) to Abraham. He renewed that promise to Abraham's son Isaac (Genesis 26:3-5), to his grandson Jacob (Genesis 28:13), and to their descendants after them forever (Leviticus 25:46; Joshua 14:9; etc.). Genesis 15:7 He also said to him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.” Genesis 15:18-21 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants, I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates— 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.” 3. God promised to bring His chosen people of destiny to the Promised Land. It is a historical fact that God brought these "chosen people" into the "Promised Land," an amazing story of miracles in itself. Exodus 6:7-8 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD. Unseen on the shore, Jesus waited for them to realize how empty and fruitless it is to step away from following Jesus. It is very hard to follow Jesus. Paul called it agonizing, and so it was. But hard as it is to follow Jesus, it is far worse to not do so! The first lesson of obedience that prompted love that morning was— 1. Jesus wanted them to know they couldn’t do anything on their own (vv. 1-3). “… and that night they caught nothing.” All night long the disciples had cast the net, waited, drew the net back, pulled it in soaking their clothes, and finding each time—nothing. Nothing. That is how it can be in our jobs, our homes, our careers and our hearts when we take our lives back from Christ’s hands and take the reins into our hands. Our work is empty, our relationships are empty, our accomplishments don’t cheer us, and our past track record no longer encourages us. We dip the nets of life as we always have and each time they come up empty. That leads to the second lesson of obedience prompted love that morning was— 2. Jesus wanted them to know He won’t bless anything done apart from Him. John 21:4-5 Have you caught any fish? Looking up in the dim light and through the mists of the lake, they could see a lone figure on the shore. The answer was obvious, but it was also a reminder of the emptiness of their nets and of their lives at that moment. Ministry that is self-prompted, self-directed, self-energized, and self-satisfied will always come up empty of eternal value and lead to the emptiness of the soul. “No” [nothing has come of all our efforts all night long]—that was the answer Christ wanted to hear. So, He initiates the third lesson of obedience prompted love that morning was— 3. Jesus wanted them to learn to follow His directions for their lives. John 21:6 Peter was the greatest fisherman he had ever known; and inside began to boil with indignation at a landlubber’s impudence giving him directions. But what else was there to do since nothing else mattered anyway. So Peter the leader, Peter the pendular, went from anger to resignation and the men followed throwing the net where they were commanded to throw it. The sharp tug on the rope in his hand, the weight of an entire shoal of fish summoned by the Master of Creation—jerked Peter out of resignation and apathy to full alert. The key is not why Jesus said, “Cast on the right side”, because if Jesus had said the left side, that is where the fish would have gone. It is not where we serve or how we serve but whether we serve at Christ’s command! The key was listening to Jesus, doing what He said, and not operating on our own initiative and in our own wisdom. But the sight before Peter’s eyes of 153 of the largest, strongest, fighting and splashing fish ever surrounded by his nets instantly made Peter’s head jerk up, eyes squinting and riveted on that lone figure on the shore. That was the start of the fourth lesson of obedience prompted love that morning was— 4. Jesus wanted them to know that He ONLY blesses obedience. John 21:7-11 As his heart told him the same, Peter heard John’s voice behind him; and filled with awe and worship for the miracle they were experiencing again. “It is the Lord!” Peter needed one thing always and only, and that was to be back as close as he could be to Jesus. The pendulum had swung wildly these past days. But nothing drew him, and caught him like the thought of Christ’s presence. In a flash he was overboard and swimming with all his might through those cold dark waters that had separated him from Jesus for even a moment. If you are listening to this story of Christ’s dealing with Peter and likewise feel empty and frustrated and aimless—maybe you need to follow Peter’s lead. Stop anything else you are doing and lift your eyes to Jesus, gaze at Him and listen to what He commands you to do, and obey. Jesus has a work for each of us to do and a way for us to do it—only when we are willing to stop, listen, and obey—can He do it. That is a lesson for all of us this morning.
