Paul Murphy - Vault Release : the extended, rewritten 'Whiskey In The Jar' , acoustic , Take 2
Hi, this is a Vault video, the unseen footage of Take 2 of my re-written and extended version of 'Whiskey In The Jar'. This was never used, as both the length, and the strength, of the words made the vocal veer off-course at junctures. Take 3, plus an electric take, are available elsewhere on my channel in 'we got there' versions, but this has an underlying emotion that those more polished ones do not.
As noted before, on my acoustic takes, I have lengthened the root tale, at the same time introducing a back-story to the narrator, whilst making it a family parable. My family.
Trying to reduce the playing time to under 18 minutes to fit on the camera file [this footage is from the safety camera], I omit the refrain after each verse, bringing it in at the end of a block of 3 verses. It still rolled over the time limit, though, so this is the only complete version of this take.
There is also a video of the prose-only, recited version, which is titled 'Pray For My Family' . This omits the refrain completely, and also has the words, and the narrative, altered further.

Lost in 1999, found in December 2022. I have no idea why I never used this, due to the datings on the other lyrics found in the box with it, it did not go into the loft until, at least, 2009. Maybe I was too close to it, or possibly, since its immediate follower in the notebook it was written in is the first 6 verses of 'Lady Helen', which is similar in content if not construction, it might be that I thought two 20-minute+ ballads about a 3-sided relationship might be a bit much. I am glad to have found it, either way, and due to its length, and the other lyrics and poems found with it, it did give me the opportunity to compile another anothology book, "Lost And Found". Due to the prevarication at the start, this is only 2/3rds of it, if I can get back to it and make a full reading, I promise I will.
Speaking of 'Lady Helen', in answer to a question I get asked a lot, yes, I did play it live, once only. It was on a multi-act bill (20 minutes each) and, due to lengthening the harmonica solos, I overran, and never got to the end of the song. I mention this because, although it never happened, I ALWAYS wanted the scenario to go like this:
Scene: Irate Irish singer-songwriter gets "Time up!" signal from stage manager, does a quick harmonica outro, and exits stage in a huff.
IIS-S: "I never got to finish 'Lady Helen' off!'
SM: "Try extending the foreplay."

Hello, thank you for viewing this video. This is a song I only rediscovered yesterday, after almost 39 years, in one of the "Lost Lyrics" box files. I have made a recital version of it (it is in "Lost Lyrics - Part 25"), but it was such a strong lyric, I really wanted to make it a full song.
So, here, some 3 decades on, I have put music to it. It's quite a dodgy performance, but, it is what you see - trying to do my best, as my illness (see my F-MND videos) has now spread - too far....
This is the first of 3 takes, or to be slightly pedantic/specific, 3 versions, since I adjusted the music and metre slightly on all 3. I wasn't really happy with this one when I cut it - as you can tell at the end - but that was because I was continually missing an accentuated 7th on the E-minor, watching the playback, it doesn't seem too bad.
I kind of like the song, it is interesting, in that it starts during the story, like when you walk into a room and there is something going down in there, an arguement, a frisson, and you're not sure what it is, who and how it started.
There is 1 more video featuring this take of song (1644b), which is from an alternate camera, that has me composing the music and playing both the first take and this one (with a different sound mix).

A new song, a eulogy to my amazing children, although it works for all children from any parent (one hopes). Unusually for me, this came over 2 days, and music first - normally the first few lines of lyric appears, and as I start writing, the tune composes itself. The initial arrival point can be viewed in video 1008, where I was playing guitar over facetime to my children as they played their computer game, and the tune came out of nowhere in that jam.
This is the first of 7 takes cut at this session, and has all the hallmark ropiness of first run-throughs! Mic set too low, riff coming and going, fresh lyrics not locked in the brain (I wrote them just 9 minutes beforehand). Nonetheless, the emotion is all there, from the off.
A real battle, incidentally, to keep it brief and sweet (long-time viewers will know that 10 minutes is short for one of my songs), but I wanted a make-the-message-hit-n-stick number. Haven't written too many of these since 1980!
Over the course of the session I changed the song around to see how it worked other ways - adding a chorus on Take 3, slowing it rignt down on Take 4, swapping the top-strings riff to a bottom-strings riff, and more; if you wish to follow the evolution, the video numbers run 1009 to 1016.
If you'll take my word for it, the tune works slightly better on piano, that central A-D-A/D riff, but in the absence of one, this is how I had to do it.

Second track on a recently-found CD titled 'The Devil & Anne _ _ _'. A 7-track album, made in 2001, and then lost at some point. Not only the CD - none of the song titles appear in my copyright files, and none of the lyrics are in my lyric files. Why that should be, I have no idea. There are also no session tapes or outtake CDs, so it may be I did not record it at my home studio.
This song, as if it is not long enough as it is, has a follow-up song later on the CD, titled 'Acceptance', same music but different words. My suspicion would be that this one was meant to open the CD, the other to close it, but for reasons unknown they became tracks 2 and 4.
