Once upon a time in a very darker and less developed world, it was the 1960s. It wasn't a horrible time, but this was a time before we had pcs and game consoles and other technology we take for granted in our own homes. When video games first did start to pop up the big titles that everyone knows were coming out, games like space invaders or asteroids then in a couple more years games like pac man and donkey kong. While the arcade market would mostly crash due to many reasons, the appearance of video game consoles had a major impact on them. People went from having to pay every time they wanted to play a game of pac man into buying it for a game console and being able to play it in your own home. Now in the 2020s we are watching the fall of physical game media along with many others. In this video essay I talk about a topic that means more to me than I think it probably means to other people and that's the rise and fall of physical video game media. Evolving from arcade cabinets, to physical game cases to digital games and consoles, I discuss what I believe we lose or miss out on compared to years ago. The magic of reading a video game manual or reading and studying the cover as well as the back of the video game case before playing and having it in your physical collection. I don’t knock anyone for buying digital only, I buy plenty of digital games and even indie games that are digital only with enough support have received physical game copies which is a huge smiley face from me. It’s the same story with books, movies and other media just in different ways but i wanted to talk about it relating to video games as it’s what i have the most experience in.
