Paul Murphy - 'Avenues Of Fate' . Remake version of the "What if you and I...?" song. Acoustic, Tk 2
This is the second of a 4-Take session trying to get 'Avenues Of Fate' down. If you sit thru' the intro, you'll see that there are some impacting finger and arm conditions [see below] but hopefully the song survives that. The intro can be skipped by clicking 03:09 .

This remake sticks to the new chord sequence, and also includes the 2 additional verses [5 and 6] that were written after the initial composition, for its inclusion in the "Lost And Found" lyric anthology. The song is about looking back on someone and thinking, 'What if yu and I...?' ; "What if we had...?" ; "What if we never...?" ; "What if I had said 'xxxx' that night instead of 'yyyy'....?" We've all been there.

One final version of this song. I recalled only today, that when I returned to the stage, in 1998, this was the first song I played. It was a multi-artist charity show, at Yeovil 93 Club. No one in the crowd knew who the hell I was, and man did I feel old, looking out on a sea of college students. "15 minutes each" all the acts were told, as there were so many of us. I ambled out, the only acoustic act on the bill, started playing before the sound man had balanced my levels, and played this 12-minute-long song of unrequited love and heartbreak. A few people clapped at the end, and I put my finger to my lips and said, "Shhh. I don't need it." Never give the audience what they want, let alone what they expect. An 'encore' to this morning's session on 'My Children', technically this is Take 14, but is more of a rough-hewn version after I had played a dry-run of it to my son. By now, my fingers were shot, closely followed by my voice, but I think the emotion comes through nonetheless - after all, you sing that from the heart, not the larynx. Incidentally, over the course of the 2 sessions, I changed the song around to see how it worked other ways - first-verse repeat in Take 1, adding a chorus on Take 3, slowing it right down on Take 4, swapping the top-strings riff to a bottom-strings riff, finger-picking on Take 11, and more; if you wish to follow the evolution of the song, the video numbers run 1009 to 1019. An unmarked CD found in a box of sessions 'safety copy' discs. It is a compilation of tracks from assorted albums, and at first ear-glance would appear to be a gig-disc, to flog at shows. I once played a show at an S&M club and flogged everything I could... er, yeah. Anyway, the only empty carriage on that train of thought is the closing track, 'Wasted Years', which is not a particulrily good recording of a 20-minute-long song that was never played live. Nor was it a seller song, meaning it was unlikely to be a disc to offer out to local bands. So, who knows. It must have been put together around 2002, and I can't remember what I did at 20.02 last night. Hope you enjoy it anhow - that's what music is about. Thus, all that exists is the CD itself, and the only extra material to that album are these 3 alternate versions, added to it as bonus tracks. On 11 December 1994, I sat on my sofa around 10a.m., and over the next 12 hours I wrote (the lyrics) to 17 songs, one after the other. Those lyrics, along with almost 200 others, were lost at some point, probably around 1997, and only rediscovered a week ago. As there is no way to turn virtually any of this material into songs, I am trying to place them into the open in two other formats: an anthology, entitled "Shadows Behind Soft Words Of Love"; and recitals. Both projects are hampered by time, as explained in the video, but, I will do what I can. Due to the length of some of the material, coupled with my neurone disease, it is not possible to capture all 17 works in one video (in musical format, it would make what used to be known as a double album), but here is the first half of that day's compositions.
