Terry Rogers is a retired community health nurse in New York who has long been active in solidarity with Palestine.
Phil Weiss spoke to her last month about the political and moral challenges involved when privileged American activists engage in these movements.
Though it is essential that more Americans learn about Palestine — and educate other Americans about what they’ve seen – the goal of the movement is for Palestinians to speak for themselves about their persecution and not rely on American spokespeople.

This May Day, Palestinian workers call for US solidarity
The Israeli occupation of Palestine is dehumanizing in thousands of ways. The military steals dignity, individuality, basic freedoms, and often people’s lives.
One site of this dehumanization is the massive military terminals that tens of thousands of Palestinian workers must pass through every day. This film gives a glimpse of one stage of the demeaning, repetitive, unrelenting process. After passing through the initial gates, Palestinians must pass through several more (understaffed, crowded and cruel) steps, taking up to three hours to pass through.

This episode is all about elections. On March 23rd Israel held its fourth national election in two years. And starting in May Palestinians in the occupied territory will be holding their first elections in 15 years. Both elections will serve as a referendum on the current leaders, and both will give us insight into what the future may hold, both for Palestinians living under Israeli occupation and, perhaps, Palestinians world-wide.
First, Mondoweiss founder and senior editor Phil Weiss talks with the Israeli human rights activist and writer Yossi Gurvitz to unpack the results of the Israeli election and talk about what comes next. Later, Al-Shabaka Senior Analyst Dr. Yara Hawari and Mondoweiss contributing writer Dr. Haidar Eid speak to our Palestine correspondent, Yumna Patel, about Palestinian politics and whether democratic elections are even possible under Israeli occupation.

Israel is bombing Gaza again. Israel launched "Operation Shield and Arrow" on Tuesday May 9, assassinating three leaders of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement. Israel targeted the PIJ commanders while they were at home with their families, resulting in the killing of children. As of May 10, at the time of publication, the death toll in Gaza had reached 21 people, and 64 injuries.

On August 18th of this year, the Israeli military raided the offices of seven Palestinian civil society organizations. They ransacked the offices, stole files and other property, and sealed the doors in an attempt to prevent them from operating.
Twenty-five United Nations’ “Independent Experts” issued a declaration on August 24th condemning “Israel’s escalating attacks against Palestinian civil society.” The declaration continued, “These actions amount to severe suppression of human rights defenders and are illegal and unacceptable.”
These Independent Experts are calling on UN member states “to take effective measures afforded by international law to put an end to these abuses.”
David Kattenberg spoke with two of the authors of the August 24th declaration. Francesca Albanese is the “Special UN Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967.” Mary Lawlor is “Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.”

The impact of the Israeli occupation of Palestine extends far beyond the disputed borders of the region.
Israeli companies – many with close ties to the government and military – export weapons and surveillance technology across the globe.
Palestinians and their communities serve as test subjects, where potential clients can witness the impact of Israeli technology in an urban warfare setting.
Award-winning journalist Antony Loewenstein details this dynamic in his book "The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World". It was published by Verso earlier this year.
Mondoweiss U.S. correspondent Michael Arria recently spoke to Lowenstein about his reporting.

“We are being treated as if we were criminals”, said Ayed Al Azzeh, shaking his head. A schoolteacher from Bethlehem, Ayed is one of thousands of public-sector teachers across the West Bank who have been striking since February 10th.
The strike comes after teachers claim the Palestinian Authority (PA) failed to follow through with wage increases, promised after strikes in 2013. Teachers’ salaries have been frozen for the past few years, despite rising living costs.
Approximately 20,000 protestors demonstrated in Ramallah upon the launch of the strike in the largest gathering since Arafat’s death in 2004, initiating a government crackdown on any further attempts of mass mobilization.
Despite the efforts of the Palestinian police and army, an estimated 15,000 protestors gathered in Ramallah for a second time on Tuesday, demanding the government meets their demands.
In an exclusive video for Mondoweiss, teachers at Tuesday’s protest reveal the obstacles they had to overcome merely to be present, and why they are resolute to continue the strike until the government concedes.

In the city of Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, Christmas is the biggest day of the year. The holiday typically draws thousands of Palestinians and foreigners alike to the city, which adorns its streets and churches in beautiful lights and decorations for the season. But this year, COVID-19 has changed all of that. Manger Square and the Church of Nativity have been emptied of their usual visitors, and Palestinian Christian families have been forced to spend their most precious day of the year under lockdown.
