The Berlin subway in painting

When discussing the urban landscape as a subject in art, a genre that originated in the 18th century to capture the essence of cityscapes, we instinctively recall renowned examples like Canaletto's portrayal of Venice, Gustave Caillebotte's interpretation of Paris, and the cityscapes of L. S. Lowry and Kirchner depicting Berlin. These artists primarily focused on depicting the urban environment, mainly because during their time, subway systems were either not fully operational or still in their conceptual stages. However, these master artists didn't overlook the inclusion of contemporary modes of transportation in their compositions. Consider Monet's famous series depicting La Gare Saint-Lazare in 1877 or L. S. Lowry's "The Railway Platform," both of which highlighted the significance of railways during their eras.

Fast forward to 2023, we might encourage contemporary painters to explore subway systems more frequently as a subject matter for their work, carrying forward the narrative initiated by the renowned figures in art history. To address this notion, several artists associated with Artmajeur have focused on Berlin, centering their artistic expression exclusively on its U-Bahn, a public transportation system that not only serves as a practical means of travel but also possesses profound historical significance. This system deserves recognition and further exploration through the medium of painting.
