Born in Egypt, Mary became a public woman in Alexandria at the age of 12 and continued for 17 years before being moved by a force preventing her from entering the church during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. She realized her impure life prevented her from seeing the life-giving cross and begged the Virgin Mary to obtain forgiveness for her sins, promising to renounce the world and live in chastity. With a renewed sense of hope, Mary crossed the Jordan and lived in the desert for 47 years, enduring extreme deprivation and temptations until her complete victory over them by the grace of God. A chance meeting with St. Zosimus led to her first reception of Holy Communion, which she had not received since her conversion. She asked him to bury her body in the sand when she passed away, which he did, and an inscription in the sand was found by her head. St. Mary of Egypt is a remarkable example of how no one is beyond redemption, and how true contrition and penance can lead to sainthood. St. Mary of Egypt, Pray for us. Who although he is God and Man; yet he is not two, but one Christ. One; not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh; but by assumption of the Manhood into God. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man; so God and Man is one Christ; Who suffered for our salvation; descended into hell; rose again the third day from the dead.
