After the Peninsula Wars and Napoleon's army was defeated, Spain was now ruled by Ferdinand VII and under his rule most of our colonies on the American mainland after bloody independence wars.His brother Infantre Carlos was supposed to succeed him according to the old Salic Laws, but instead, with the birth of his daughter Isabella II he passed the "Pragmatic Sanction".
After Ferdinand died, Isabella and her liberal supporters (the Christianos) fought the conservative supporters of Infantre Carlos (the Carlists).Isabella was overthrown by her allies, replaced by her Italian son Alfonso XII in 1868. Alfonso was forced into exile in 1873 and the first Spanish republic was created. The republic was overthrown in 1874, replaced by the Kingdom Of Spain, the Bourbon restoration under Alfonso XII and later Alfonso XIII, who lost the Philippines and the Caribbean colonies.
In 1923, a military dictatorship was established and subsequently, in 1931, calls for elections forced the creation of the Second Spanish Republic.The Second Republic became once again characterised by conflict between the left and right wings and now, with the 1936 elections looming, it seems like a civil war is inevitable.
