Today Leo is talking about Taiwan. We've all heard of the place - but Leo takes us through some history, and how that might affect the global semiconductor market in the years to come.
00:00 Start
00:15 A little history lesson from Leo
04:15 Why should we, the public in Europe care?
05:45 TSMC will spend $100B USD in 3 years, $30B this year
06:32 SMIC investing $2.35B
07:14 TSMC building a fab in Arizona
07:53 Europeans decide making chips is a good idea
09:03 Intelligence reported - some details and American intervention ?
11:15 What will happen in the next 2 years?
LEO'S NOTES FOR VIDEO:
UK Government has announced a Green list of 12 destinations
Portugal
Israel
Singapore
Australia
New Zealand
Brunei
Iceland
Gibraltar
Falkland Islands
Faroe Islands
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
St Helena, Tristan de Cunha, Ascension Island
You will note that Taiwan is missing from the list, despite its stellar virus containment, and most likely that is because Taiwan does not officially exist.
We can turn to a video produced by the Economist that explains the fascinating history of Taiwan over the past 80 years
The Economist ‘Is Taiwan part of China?’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ7hGoUEGCM
TSMC will spend US$100 billion in the next three years with US$30 billion ‘this year’
(Not certain whether that is 2021 or Q1 2021 to Q1 2022)
Intel is building two new fabs at its Ocotillo campus in Arizona
Intel Capex budget for 2021 is USS19-20 billion
(in 2020 they spent US$14.3 billion and in 2019 US$16.2 billion)
SMIC will invest US$2.35 billion in Shenzen and should come online in 2022
TSMC is building a fab in Arizona, although surely not at the cutting edge
Samsung will expand their fab in Austin, TX
In December 2020 the EU announced they would deliver a 2nm fab somewhere in the EU by 2030 with a proposed budget of Euros 145 billion

Leo was over at IFA 2019 this week and he got some time to look at what ASUS had on show.
LEOS NOTES:
Asus at IFA 2019
ROG Phone II broken down to show the components and development
Vivobook S14 with ScreenPad (secondary display in the touchpad), Core i7 and MX250 graphics
ProArt PA329C 32-inch, 600 nits peak brightness, Display HDR600
ProArt StudioBook One with Core i9-9900HK 8-core/16-thread and Quadro RTX 6000 housed in the lid of the laptop and a 4K display - will it cost £10,000?
This has been confirmed by nvidia to be a standard chip and not Max-Q. we are awaiting confirmation of the TDP.
The base under the keyboard is a hefty chunk of metal to balance the laptop and prevent it from tipping over.
Titanium cooling system, rather than copper, can handle a total TDP of 300W.
The Quadro RTX 5000 Max-Q is 80W and RTX 5000 (standard) is up to 150W.
Quadro RTX 6000 is special because it is only available through our reference design which is being productized by Asus. It's 300W total system power and with Optimus and other CPU/GPU power steering technologies it can dynamically shift between CPU or GPU power depending on the application.
ProArt StudioBook Pro 17, 17-inch screen, Intel Xeon E-2276M, Quadro RTX 3000 Max-Q graphics and Thunderbolt 3
ProArt PA32UCG display, 32-inch, HDR1600, 120Hz variable refresh rate. Peak brightness 1,600 nits, sustained brightness 1,000 nits.
ProArt PA27UCX with Mini LED backlights
ProArt StudioBook Pro X, Quadro RTX 5000 graphics

We have already reviewed plenty of expensive RTX partner cards, some costing several hundred pounds more than Nvidia's MSRP. This MSI RTX 2070 Armor 8G, however, is just £459 - so it could be appealing to those looking for good value.
