Ways to Improve Focus and Attention Without Medication
Many children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD are on medication to help improve their focus. Neurofeedback therapy can be used as an alternative to medication or be used in conjunction with it. When used in conjunction, neurofeedback therapy actually makes medication work better. Taking medication for attention deficit disorders seems like the logical route, but if you dive into the research, taking medication to improve focus and attention might be inadvertently having the opposite effect. Furthermore, psychotropic medications (the kinds used to treat ADD and ADHD) aren’t generally tested on kids under the age of 18, so parents and caregivers need to be aware of what exactly these medications are, what the side effects are, and what their other options are. The good news is neurofeedback therapy is one of the safest ways to improve attention and focus.
In this episode, we’re continuing our series on collaborative health and talking about how healthcare professionals need to come together for truly patient-centred care. There are many different therapies that can benefit a patient and it’s a beautiful thing when patients are treated under a collaborative healthcare model. At Brain and Body Rehabilitation Specialists, this is what we do! Today we’re hearing from kinesiologist Jennifer Novak. In our conversation, Jennifer shared how she approaches patient care with a three-tier model and also shared some incredible stories of how patients have overcome injuries and seen amazing changes in their bodies and their brains.

Dyslexia is one of those terms that we don’t think much about. We just accept it. If your child is diagnosed with dyslexia you might feel relieved to finally have an official diagnosis so that you can move forward with the proper supports. However, I believe it’s essential for parents to understand how this term came to be, what a diagnosis means for their child, and that there might be some other pieces to the puzzle that need to be included; I believe there are other issues with why a child might have trouble with reading, writing, and spelling.
However, before we get into those reasons, we are going to take a close look at the history of the dyslexia diagnosis. The term dyslexia was first introduced in 1883 by a researcher who was studying five adult patients who had problems with reading as the result of some kind of brain injury. This should already raise some questions due to the fact that the researcher wasn’t studying children and due to the fact that in this case, dyslexia was only used to describe incidents where a brain injury impeded reading ability. In the years to come, dyslexia was known by many different terms but was typically only used for individuals who had suffered from brain injuries.

Today I’m so fortunate to have James Roguski with me, who is a researcher and author for a natural health proponent, and an activist for getting old systems out and new systems in.
James Roguski uses his research of the World Health Organization (WHO) to educate the public on what really happens behind WHOs closed doors. He shares with us the dangers of The Zero Treaty, and of the proposed amendments to existing International Health Regulations (IHR). We discuss the concerning effects these changes can have on our governments, personal freedoms, and our own personal health decisions. We uncover the global decisions that affect our personal health care and talk about how to take action to make your voice heard.

In this episode, I share about a 10-year-old boy who came into my office struggling with anxiety, ODD, trouble paying attention, and impulsive behaviour. I see combinations of these behaviours and others in the kids I work with and the good news is there are ways I learn about out what’s going on in their bodies and brains. At Connect My Brain, I believe in resolution! I want to help you connect the pieces and in turn, help your child move forward.

Today I have a very special guest on my show, Debbie Spicer. 22 years ago, after 8 years of infertility, Debbie and her husband were living in Africa and had the chance to adopt an amazing little girl whom they named Kgakgamatso or KG for short. KG’s name means miracle and as you hear her story you will realize what a miracle her life really is. At just ten days old, KG was in a car accident in a remote area. The adults with her were killed on the scene and KG wasn’t found until the next morning. KG sustained serious brain injuries from the accident but it took years to understand the full extent of her injuries. Each time KG and her family travelled back and forth between Africa and the states, it got more and more difficult for KG to get on the plane to the point where she couldn’t fly anymore. This is when I met KG and started working with her and she really made incredible progress. KG’s story is truly a miracle and a message of hope that many families so desperately need.

This week I had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Cedrick Noel, one of my colleagues at Brain and Body Rehabilitation Specialists (BBRS). Dr. Noel is a chiropractic neurologist who specializes in spine care. In our conversation, Dr. Noel explained the importance of collaboration in healthcare not just for the patient’s benefit, but also for the benefit of the healthcare providers themselves. He also talked about what he does as a chiropractic neurologist and how he address both brain and body in order to help his patients achieve optimal results. While Dr. Noel’s main focus and passion is spine care, he sees a wide variety of patients for a variety of other issues including brain injuries, diziness, and balance issues.

Today I’m going to be sharing another case study with you, this time of an 8-year old boy who struggled with anxiety, a suspected attention deficit disorder, and all kinds of other health issues such as asthma, eczema, and poor balance. As we explore his story together, I’ll talk you through everything from his mom’s pregnancy to his infancy and toddler years to now. It’s remarkable how a child’s circumstances and environment have such an impact on development. My hope is that these case studies will help bring awareness and hope to some of the struggles you might face with your own children. When I first met this boy, he had all kinds of struggles, but his story of change, healing, and health will definitely give you hope!

Today is one of our final episodes on collaborative health and today I’m interviewing another colleague of mine at Brain and Body Rehabilitation Specialists (BBRS), Dr. Jose Adorno. Dr. Jose is a chiropractic neurologist who just graduated a few months ago. What I love about Dr. Jose is that he didn’t try to make it on his own first, as many new chiropractors do, but that he jumped right into working in a collaborative environment. Dr. Jose has such a passion for working with the brain and helping his patients. In our conversation, he shares why joining the collaborative work at BBRS was a no-brainer for him, how he was inspired to become a chiropractor, and how he actually helped me with some eye troubles I was having!

Every part of your body – your reflexes, gut, nutrition, brain – is impacted when you’re in a state of stress. If we want to really understand stress then we need to look at the whole body.
Stress is a physiological event. When our brains perceive a threat or stressful situation, there is a cascade of events that occur in our bodies sometimes even before we are conscious of the threat at hand. Of course, stress is an important survival instinct, but what happens when we live in a state of chronic stress? A prolonged state of stress can dysregulate your autonomic nervous system and cause a lot of concerning symptoms, which, if left unchecked, will just continue to cause more and more problems. This episode is just a starting point, but it’s important to start thinking about stress and figuring out how to recognize and then break that cycle of chronic stress.
