Satan is ALIVE and BUSY today all around us. Peter reminds us that BELIEVERS can be DEVOURED by the Devil. What is that?
Before we return to Revelation 9, which would be opening to one of the darkest chapters of the Bible, we should ask ourselves why would we even want to study through this chapter?
Why do we need to study what God says about Satan, demons, and the bottomless pit? Is that something that believers in the 21st century really need to know?
The answer to all those questions is the same. A resounding YES. The truth is that God has warned us about our Adversary Satan (that, by the way, is the meaning of the name Satan, “adversary”), and commanded us to guard against him. To a historic, evangelical, Bible-believing, Bible-teaching Christian: Most of us know far too little about the tactics, strategies, and methods of Satan.
Beware of Satan’s Plans for Believers: The bottom line is that if we are going to be on guard against our adversary, we need to know how to recognize his presence, face his onslaughts, and overcome his attacks against us, in the ways that God through His Word instructs us. In Revelation 9 we will be taught an immense amount about the unseen and horrifically powerful kingdom of darkness that is shaping everything around us, more each day, against the God we love, serve, and belong to. But, before we dive into all that, we need to see why we even need to know all this.
Join me in 1 Peter 5 this morning, as we enter into the cosmic conflict; and understand what we are going to face more of each day, as we live in these times God calls the “last days”. 1 Peter 5:8-9 (NKJV) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
Each of us faces a very dangerous, clever, and powerful foe. He is the smartest, most powerful, and highest of all the angelic creatures God ever made. He is fallen and wants only to damage anything that is attached to God. Peter here warns us that Satan can devour us. Like a lion, he pounces and swallows us up. Peter knew that from personal experience.
Jesus had warned Peter to watch (be vigilant) and pray in the Garden of Gethsemane using this very same word (gregoreo, “vigilant”) three times (Matthew 26:38, 40, 41). Peter heard, did not obey, and ended up denying Christ three times.
Peter got devoured. If Satan can’t devour us, he also tries to attack us like he did Eve when she listened to the serpent whispering lies, which Paul describes in 2 Cor. 11:3, 13-14 as the “angel of light”.

God's Word teaches us a doctrine called “believer’s baptism” which means that: God has only designed baptism to be applied to believers.
Believer’s Baptism started when Jesus Christ said that the way that people were to declare God’s ownership of their lives after they were saved, was when they were baptized in His Name.
Jesus included this baptism of believers in the plan for the church.
CHRIST JESUS LEFT THE PLAN FOR HIS CHURCH
When Jesus left the disciples with the plan they were to follow, it was simple:
Go, evangelize, baptize & train.
That is the Great Commission. That is God’s plan for Christ's Church. As stated twice (Matthew 28:18-20 and Mark 16:16); and illustrated in Acts nine times, it is what God expects us in Christ's Church to be doing.
Our job is to make disciples; and our motivation is to do that (and everything else), for the glory of God. A simple reading of the commission of Christ and the record of the response of His disciples, and the early church, would lead us to conclude that:
BAPTISM WAS PART OF THE PLAN
Baptism for the New Testament Church had its origin in the command of Christ to make disciples and baptize them (Matt. 28:19). There was a particular order established in what Christ said: first people became disciples, then those disciples were baptized, and then they were taught.
Please stand with me, and listen to the clear and simple plan God the Son, our Savior Jesus Christ left for each of us:
Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV) And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

He knows every detail, every fear, every weakness and can help us!
The Arbel Cliff: Just think of Jesus in prayer, going out on the mountain to pray all night (Matthew 14), then think of the disciples sent on ahead to cross in their boat, getting stuck in the storm. That very spot you read about in Matthew 14 is where you will also sit and pray!
SUMMARY: Jesus has felt the loss of John the Baptist (14:1-13); so He heads out to a quiet place with His disciples. Multitudes follow and Jesus is again moved with compassion v. 14; feeds the 5,000 and sends the disciples home in their boat v. 22. He sends away the multitudes and goes up the mountain (Arbel) to pray alone at 6 PM. The timing of the watches is—v. 15 is between 3-6pm; v. 23 is 6pm; v. 25 is the 4th watch from 3-6am. If they got into the boat at 6pm and it is now 3am, how long were they rowing and fearing for their lives? 9+ hours!
LESSONS:
1. The disciples are tormented by a storm that throws them around for 9-12 hours v.25; Jesus waited all that time, praying for them and watching them from the mountain too.
2. Jesus knows just where they are in the dark and walks across the storm directly to them.
3. After they scream at the sight of something on the water, He says stop fearing but the storm still rages; Peter walks and sinks in the storm but Jesus rescues him.
-We can’t make it through the storm alone.
-God allows us to go for long periods through storms.
-God allows us to sink at times to show our needs.
-When He calmed the storm and rescued them, they worshipped Him.
APPLICATION: Lord, I will trust you with my storms, and through my storms and worship when you come to calm my storms. I want to TRUST You more because You allow & plan my trials. I want to LOVE You more because You watch & intercede for me. I want to LOOK for You more because You always come across the waves of my storms in life. Lord, You knew right where they were v. 23. You prayed for them and watched them, and came at exactly the right time v. 31-32. You waited for their response of wonder and worship v. 33.

The Closing Hours of Life on Planet Earth
This chapter opens the Tribulation, the first step in Christ’s taking back the earth, which is rightfully His. One by one Christ unrolls the seals. As each seal is broken, He takes further possession and control of His inheritance. Finally, “the seventh angel sounded; and there arose loud voices in heaven, saying, ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever’” (11:15). When He unrolls the seventh seal and the seventh trumpet blows, the earth is His.
Walk with me through the pages of Revelation chapters six, eight, nine, and sixteen. Briefly, may I describe the living hell you can avoid if you are a part of the Rapture. Here are only a few of the dreadful disasters that take place during the Tribulation:
1. One out of every four people will die (see Rev. 6:8), some through the ravages of war, others by starvation, and amazingly many others by the ‘beasts of the earth’. So, whether by death that comes instantly and thus less dreaded or a slow and painful death that is lingering and agonizing-25 percent of all people will die. The world's population was just over 8 billion in 2023, so that means at least 2 billion will die. That amounts to just about seven times the current population of the United States-can you imagine that? And remember that the population of the world is doubling every 39.5 years. So every day the number of people who will die becomes larger and larger.
2. One-third of all vegetation will be burned up. All grass, every tree, everything green will be destroyed (see Rev. 8:7).
3. The sun and the moon will be darkened as nature goes into revolt (see Rev. 8:12).
4. The gates of hell will open and hordes of locusts, the size of horses, will come upon the earth. Those locusts will be allowed to sting men like scorpions and the pain will last for five months. The Bible says men will beg God to let them die but they will not die (see Rev. 9:3-6).
5. There will be worldwide famine, unlike anything the world has ever seen (see Rev. 18:8).
6. There will be a world war so bloody that the blood of those killed in battle will flow for two hundred miles up to the bridle of a horse in the valley of Jezreel. This will be the Battle of Armageddon (see Rev. 14:20).
7. All told, during the Great Tribulation, as many as half of all the people on the earth will be killed. Now, do you see why God refers to the Rapture as a ‘blessed hope’? Because the Tribulation to come is so horrible!
But that means we are gone and will escape everything, right? Yes, exactly, we will miss every part of the TRIBULATION, but we will probably go through some of the worst days we have ever seen before it starts.

Revelation Gives us the Elements of True Biblical Worship
All that the Bible has taught about worship is applied in Revelation 1-3, as Jesus, who is God the Son, comes down and walks among His servants, the saints of His Church: and watches their worship. Here are the four elements of True Biblical Worship that are emphasized in these three chapters.
1. True Biblical Worship: Starts with and Flows from the Words that God Gave to Us (Revelation 1:1)
The right way to worship God is found only in His Word.
God's Word is vital to us, and the pathway God left for us to approach Him in our worship. All three elements of worship must be Right according to God's Word. The Right God, the Right offering, in the Spirit-prompted way of Truth.
In John 4:24 Jesus has already said that we are to worship God in Spirit and in truth: “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”Here in Revelation 1:1 we see that the One we worship wants us to approach Him with our worship in truth, that is: based upon the revealed Word of God. Worship that is to be accepted by God must be Word-guided, and Word-based. So first, True Biblical Worship: starts with and flows from the Word that God gave to us (Revelation 1:1).
Do you stop to eat from God's Word so that you can live each day in step with God? We were created to worship or glorify God. He wants our worship. If we desire to please Him, we will hunger and thirst for Him in His Word: our way of knowing how to properly worship Him.
2. True Biblical Worship: Is Only available for
Those who are “in the Spirit” (Revelation 1:10)
John was able to see God in His Glory, and worship Him as King, all because of the power of the regenerating, indwelling Holy Spirit.
Paul says in Philippians 3:3 that those who are saved worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no hope of salvation by fleshly efforts.
The Spirit quickens the flesh profits nothing John 6:63, only spiritual worship prompted by the Spirit can please God.
Principle 2: True Biblical Worship: is only available for those who are “in the Spirit” (Revelation 1:10).
Do you know that you have the Spirit of God dwelling within, the seal of every true born-again believer? The only worship God accepts comes from the power of His Spirit within us. Our connection to God is only powered by His Spirit. To worship in an acceptable way we must not quench the power of the Holy Spirit. Anything that diminishes His power we must avoid at all costs.
3. True Biblical Worship: Involves Seeing Christ's Beauty &
Falling in Reverence Before Him (Revelation 1:17)
When John turns and sees Jesus as the Risen King of Kings, he falls before Him.
John falls before Christ just like Peter. When the huge school of fish was caught, in Luke 5:8-9, Peter fell on his face like John.
John falls before Christ just like the disciples in the boat, when the sleeping Christ was awakened and stilled the storm. Mk. 4:41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
Principle 3: True Biblical Worship: involves seeing Christ's beauty & falling in reverence before Him (Revelation 1:17).
We were created to glorify God. We must glorify Him through our adoring worship. Worship flows from reverence. Do you come in reverence, bowing before Him? Are you seeking with all your heart to find Christ in His Word? He said we only find Him in worship when we “seek Him with all our hearts”.
4. True Biblical Worship: Is Always Being
Watched and Tested by Christ (Revelation 2:1)
Jesus reminds us that He walks about the Church as we gather (Rev. 2:1), to see if we are offering to Him the worship He desires, in the way He desires.

Why He Came: Jesus is the Door to Life Abundant Today
Have you experienced this wonderful new life that Jesus came to offer you?
Jesus came for one very simple reason, He said it so clearly:
John 10:9-10 (NKJV) I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
Jesus lives—The Tomb is empty.
Death is defeated—The Grave is opened.
God is in control—His Word is true.
The Devil’s power is destroyed—God won.
Historic Faith can say Christ Lives—but Saving Faith always says Christ Lives in me today!
Everything we marvel at in the Gospels, Jesus still does today
He sees, He knows, He cares, He comes, He prays, He provides, He cleanses.
But most of all, He saves and gives life that is: guilt-free, anxiety-free, hope-filled, love-filled, abundantly joy-filled, and overflowing with peace no matter what is happening.
Saving Faith says Christ Lives in Me Today
On this Easter Sunday as we celebrate Christ's resurrection, is that the checklist of what you are experiencing in life today? Ask yourself:
Am I at peace, with fears and turmoil banished by Christ's presence in me?
Are you filled with hope, joy, kindness, and love?
Are you guilt-free, knowing that every one of your many sins are all forgiven, paid for, and forever erased from God’s record?
Each of those qualities is the result of saving faith that results from Christ living in me today.
Have you cried out “God be merciful to me” through Christ and confessed that you have broken God’s Law and are “the sinner” that Jesus died and rose to save?
If not, you can this morning. Jesus is here, alive and with His arms open wide to you!
Today we celebrate Christ's Resurrection.
But what does Christ's rising from the dead imply to us today? It means that Christ now is free to be everywhere anyone could be, all the time. During His earthly ministry Jesus could only be in one place at a time, but now He stands beside each of us here today.

This morning Revelation 3 introduces us to the church that pleased Jesus Christ, and thus had a His blessings poured upon all that they did for Him.
Of all the seven churches, Philadelphia, the sixth church can be described as the Faithful Church, and stands out as the model. This morning my prayer would be that we as a church here at Calvary would be seen by our Lord as a church filled with Philadelphia-like saints, who gather and live out Christ in this faithful way.
The promises Christ gave them, the insights He shares with them, and the lessons He offers to us who listen: are unparalleled in any of the other letters. First we can call:
Philadelphia:
The Faithful Church
If you don’t yet have a favorite Epistle that Jesus Christ wrote, this one may be a good candidate. Their example as faithful, obedient, serving, and worshipping saints is so powerful. They were not perfect, just forgiven. They were not superior in any way, just responsive to God’s desires for them individually and as a church.
Each of these seven letters is a model, example, and symbol of the types of churches and believers that will exist, side-by-side, throughout all the generations of Christ's Church: from Pentecost to the Rapture.
In a world that is so needy Christ has left His Church as a light; but some are distracted like Ephesus; and some are deeply persecuted and barely holding on like Smyrna; and others are compromised like Pergamos; and others are harboring secret sins like Thyatira, or dead like Sardis. But one church is vibrant, alive, faithful, evangelizing, worshipping, and doing just what Jesus Christ left them to do. May we all ask the Lord to enable us to choose to live as they lived. Next remember that:

materialistic-christians-can-make-jesus
For the past six weeks, we have looked at how Christ's words about the dangers of living for the temporal treasures of materialism stayed with Peter to the end of his life, even to the point of his last chapter of life, 2 Peter 3. We saw these as:
Peter’s Lessons on the End of the World, Materialism, Contentment & the Un-Cluttered Life
But, the lessons of Peter’s last chapter are dwarfed by the even more clear and direct words of Christ's last letter.
As we each open our Bibles to Revelation 3:14-21, we find Christ's Last Words to His Church, written down in this letter to the last church. The theme of this final letter is very pointedly about Materialism.
Peter alluded to what Jesus taught him about materialism in 2 Peter 3; but in Revelation 3, Jesus point-blank condemns materialism in any form. In fact, we could entitle Christ's letter with these words:
Materialism in Believers Makes Jesus Nauseous
Listen again with me to Christ's shocking words to all of us in His church delivered to us in Revelation 3:14-21:
And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
In Matthew 23 religious hypocrisy made Jesus so angry that He spoke His harshest words recorded in the Gospels to the Pharisees & Sadducees.
In John 2 defiled worship made Jesus so angry He acted in the most violent way ever recorded in the Gospels.
But here in Revelation 3, something happens that we have never before seen in Christ's life. We have seen Him moved with compassion, weary in ministry, angry at the white-washed hypocrisy of religious leaders, and violently driving out money changers and livestock sellers in the Temple. But we never saw Jesus sick before.
When Christ Gets the Flu Bug
In the 89 chapters of the Gospels we see Jesus tired, sorrowful, quiet, dynamic, reflective, kind, tender, engaging, receptive, prayerful, and troubled: but never anywhere in His earthly ministry was Jesus ever seen nauseated by anything.
Jesus was face-to-face with demons, face-to-face with Satan, touching the rotted flesh of lepers, placing His fingers into the ears of deaf people, plastering mud onto the sightless eyes of a blind man, touching the feverish brow of a dying woman, and even grasping the cold, lifeless hand of the corpse of a dead child; but none of that sin, suffering, and defilement is ever seen making Him sick.
As far as we know only one thing can make the Holy, Harmless, Undefiled Savior of the World, Creator of the Universe, and Risen & Good Shepherd: nauseous. That one thing is in Revelation 3:16-17.
