[Success Story] A Mom’s Perspective on Connect My Brain
Kelly Collins brought her son to Connect My Brain when she didn’t know where else to turn. Kelly shares why she brought her son in, her expectations, and some of the hurdles they faced. Hearing Kelly’s story perspective is extremely powerful. Her son used to exhibit all kinds of difficult behaviours and as Kelly says herself, every day was rough. Now, the rough days come much less frequently and the root causes of her son’s behaviours have been identified, allowing Kelly to really work with her son based on his needs. Kelly also shares her own honest review of Connect My Brain. She warns parents not to come in expecting a magic fix or expecting things to be easy, but she does offer a message of hope and encouragement for others in her shoes. Here at Connect My Brain, we want to learn about your child, understand what’s going on in their brains and bodies, and help you and your child change the patterns their brains have gotten stuck in.
Food is probably the biggest struggle for people, especially parents with children that have struggles, and nutrition can become incredibly complicated and overwhelming. Here in my practice I have a 3-tiered approach of Mechanical, Chemical, Brain. So when we talk about nutrition, it’s going to be about the chemical piece – the part that runs you and I as human beings. In today’s Nutrition 101 episode, we explore three questions on nutrition: Why should I focus on Nutrition? Why is it so difficult? And why does it demand such an aggressive approach in order to make a change? I discuss where your food comes from, oral health, gut health, and how to start your journey to a healthier lifestyle through your nutrition.

Why do kids have meltdowns? Before we look at the kids, we actually need to look at the parents and the caregivers. Even during pregnancy, major stress or grief in the mom’s life can dramatically impact the development and wiring of her baby. Understanding our role as parents is the most important part of raising a balanced child. If we as parents are not regulated and not balanced, we cannot teach our kids to be. In this episode I’ll share how the experiences of a parent can have a lasting impact on their children, why it is so important for adults to be regulated, some tips for helping your child navigate their emotions, and how we can help you with this at Connect My Brain.

Today we’re going to talk specifically about the tonic labyrinthine reflex, or TLR. The TLR is extremely far-reaching and is connected to our center of gravity. When it’s not integrated properly, it causes balance issues, proprioceptive issues, and more.
As we talk about TLR, we will also talk about the importance of addressing the root cause of the struggles your children might be having. For example, if a child is having trouble with reading or math we might first try to find them a tutor. If the problem is purely academic, this might help. However, if the problem is related to something deeper (such as a reflex not integrating properly and causing problems in the ocular system), then this will only be a short-term fix and as soon as the tutoring term ends, the child will be back to square one. We cannot try to work on our children’s higher brain function without fixing the lower brain function or they will always be tripped up. We need to get to the root cause and focus on resolution instead of adaptation.

We use the word stress so lightly, but it is a physiological event that can affect every part of our bodies, and especially our brains. We are not meant to be in stress all the time. I think we often think about stress as it applies to adults, but forget that children can also experience stress and chronic stress. In this episode I talk about how stress relates to development and physiology, how it triggers our fight or flight response, and what to do if you or your child are caught in a cycle of chronic stress.

This week I had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Cedrick Noel, one of my colleagues at Brain and Body Rehabilitation Specialists (BBRS). Dr. Noel is a chiropractic neurologist who specializes in spine care. In our conversation, Dr. Noel explained the importance of collaboration in healthcare not just for the patient’s benefit, but also for the benefit of the healthcare providers themselves. He also talked about what he does as a chiropractic neurologist and how he address both brain and body in order to help his patients achieve optimal results. While Dr. Noel’s main focus and passion is spine care, he sees a wide variety of patients for a variety of other issues including brain injuries, diziness, and balance issues.

Today’s episode will set the foundation for the rest of our conversation surrounding stress, anxiety, and PTSD. Before we can really dive into this topic, we need to understand the developmental background of these conditions. We are going to go all the way back to the beginning of a child’s life – conception – and take a look at how our bodies are wired to handle stressful situations right from nine weeks of pregnancy. In this episode, I’ll share how our nervous systems should respond to stress, how a parent’s state of mental and physical health impacts their children, what happens in our brains when we experience trauma, and how you can turn things around if you or your child are struggling with chronic stress or anxiety. I truly believe that these problems can be solved rather than just labelled.

In this episode, we’re continuing our series on collaborative health and talking about how healthcare professionals need to come together for truly patient-centred care. There are many different therapies that can benefit a patient and it’s a beautiful thing when patients are treated under a collaborative healthcare model. At Brain and Body Rehabilitation Specialists, this is what we do! Today we’re hearing from kinesiologist Jennifer Novak. In our conversation, Jennifer shared how she approaches patient care with a three-tier model and also shared some incredible stories of how patients have overcome injuries and seen amazing changes in their bodies and their brains.

If your child is struggling with something such as reading or handwriting, it’s important to step back and look at the big picture. What are the skills and milestones that a child needs to attain in order to successfully read or write? What would happen if those skills or milestones were interrupted?
In this episode we’re going to look at a handwriting sample done by one of my patients, a 7 year old boy and I’m going to tell you what his handwriting tells me about his development.

I talk about learning challenges in a more general sense and focus on cognitive flexibility, motivation, and how the lockdowns of 2020 are still affecting our kids today, much more than you might think. Although I’m sure many of us would rather forget the events of 2020 and the years following, we need to realize that these events changed our kids. Sure, the labels and diagnoses that we talked about in the past few episodes existed before the pandemic started, but these diagnoses are continuing to climb and we would be naive to think that the effects of the lockdowns on our kids are all in the past. This episode will have a strong focus on the far-reaching influence of the 2020 lockdowns, but I also talk about how motivation develops, how technologys is deeply influencing our children’s brains and behaviours, and where to start if you see your child struggling in school.
