Resilient Discipleship | By Pastor Bong Baylon | RLCC
Date: Nov 2, 2022
Text: Luke 17:1-10
As followers of Christ, we will face the problems of sin, relational difficulties, fears and doubts, and obedience issues in our daily lives. They are inevitable. But if we are resilient, we can overcome them all by the grace of God.

Having the correct view of God and success are foundational matters. They prepare you to be a dreamer and a doer. But you cannot be an ordinary dreamer. You cannot just dream about anything and then do it yourself. You need to see God's dream for you and pursue it by faith.

Right Attitudes Toward Wealth | By Pastor Bong Baylon | RLCC
Date: Oct 27, 2022
Text: Psalm 49:1-20
We all have the tendency to admire wealthy people. Deep inside our hearts, we wonder if we can be like them. Social media tend to glamorize these people making them really attractive and admirable. Sometimes, as ordinary people, we tend to envy them. But what does God's word say about wealth?

What should we remember about wealthy people?
Two Wise Reminders
1. Wealthy people, who trust in their wealth, will die just like beasts (vv.1-12).
2. Wealthy people, who have no understanding, will die just like beasts (vv.13-20).
Central Idea: “Only God's wisdom can give us the right attitudes toward wealth.” (“Tanging ang karunungan ng Diyos ang makapagbibigay sa atin ng tamang saloobin patungkol sa kayamanan.”)

1 Paul, an apostle — sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead — 2 and all the brothers and sisters with me, to the churches in Galatia: 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel — 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse! (Galatians 1:1-9)
We live in a pluralistic world where people believe all kinds of things. To live peacefully with others, we need to practice acceptance and tolerance. But this should not mean compromise. Just because we can accept and tolerate someone who believes differently from us does not mean that all truth statements are equally true. A truth statement is simply a claim that something is true. But that does not mean it is true. We must learn to guard against false beliefs.

Fulfilling Our God-given Responsibility | By Pastor Bong Baylon | RLCC
14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” 16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. 18 But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” 19 Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, “I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.” 20 And Isaiah boldly says, “I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.” 21 But concerning Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.” (Romans 10:14-21)
So many people today have yet to experience true salvation. They remain separated from God and in danger of eternal damnation. But sometimes they are not to be blamed since no one has yet told them the Gospel or has helped them to understand it. This is our responsibility as believers in Christ or as the church. We are called to proclaim the Gospel and help people understand it. Once we have done that, people are now responsible for their responses to it.

Today, we begin our study of the Book of Acts. Continuing on from the Gospel of Luke, where we learned about what Jesus began to do and teach, let us now learn about what He continued to do and teach by the power of the Holy Spirit through His people, the church.

Detrimental Relationships | By Pastor Bong Baylon | RLCC
God creates us for relationships. But not all relationships are good for us. Some of them are detrimental to our spiritual lives and can harm us or make us ineffective and unproductive. Ironically, the detrimental relationships that the Bible warns us about are not with regard to unbelievers or the people in the world. The apostle Paul says in 1 Cor 5:9-10, "I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case, you would have to leave this world." The Bible warns us to watch out against certain types of believers within the church that can negatively influence us.

1 Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race. 2 Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts. 3 May the Lord silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue—4 those who say, “By our tongues we will prevail; our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?” 5 “Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the Lord. “I will protect them from those who malign them.” 6 And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. 7 You, Lord, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked, 8 who freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human race. (Psalm 12:1-8)
When we are hurt physically, we know sooner or later we will be healed by God's grace. But when words hurt us, it seems to be a totally different experience. It's hard to recover from hurtful words. It affects us deeply in our hearts and we can't seem to get back to being normal again. The cruel words stay in our minds and they keep on repeating like a "last song syndrome."

Main Idea: “Guard your heart when you're hurt by words.” (“Bantayan mo ang iyong puso kapag ikaw ay nasaktan ng mga salita.”)
How should we respond when we are hurt by words?
Guard your heart in four areas
1. Guard your heart against overreaction (vv.1-2).
2. Guard your heart against revenge (vv.3-4).
3. Guard your heart against narrow focus (vv.5-6).
4. Guard your heart against unbelief (vv.7-8).
