***"Cocteau Twins"*** was a Scottish band active from 1979 to 1997. They were formed in Grangemouth by ***[Robin Guthrie](https://cutt.ly/tvKpRaT)*** (guitars, drum machine) and ***[Will Heggie](https://cutt.ly/nvKpOu1)*** (bass), adding ***[Elizabeth Fraser](https://cutt.ly/AvKpDfq)*** (vocals) in 1981 and replacing Heggie with multi-instrumentalist ***[Simon Raymonde](https://cutt.ly/CvKpJR8)*** in 1983.
The group earned critical praise for their ethereal, effects-laden sound and the vocals of Fraser, whose lyrics often abandon recognisable language, than on the subjective sounds and textures of verbalized emotions. They pioneered the 1980s alternative rock subgenre of dream pop.
***"Head over Heels"*** is the second studio album by ***"Cocteau Twins"***, released in October 1983 by **[4AD](https://cutt.ly/KvKaGFi)**.
Fraser's singing was more direct in the mix than it had been on the band's first album, ***"Garlands"***, and although her lyrics were still often understandable, she began to shift away from conventional vocabulary towards enigmatic, emotional sound.
Perhaps the two strongest numbers of all are: ***"Sugar Hiccup"*** mixing the mock choir effect the band would use elsewhere with both a lovely guitar line and singing, and ***"Musette and Drums"***, a massive, powerful collision of Guthrie's guitar at its loudest and most powerful and Fraser's singing at its most intense.
The album introduces a variety of different shadings and approaches to the incipient Cocteau's sound, pointing the band towards the exultant, elegant beauty of later releases.
***"Glass Candle Grenades”*** is the fifth song on ***”Cocteau Twins”*** second album ***[”Head Over Heels”](https://cutt.ly/WvLHsmg)***.

***Blur*** are an English rock band, formed in *[London](https://cutt.ly/lIPfkyL)* in 1988. Following an image makeover in the mid-'90s, the group emerged as the most popular band in the U.K., establishing itself as heir to the English guitar pop tradition of ***[The Kinks](https://cutt.ly/fIPfT16)***, ***[The Small Faces](https://cutt.ly/KIPfOYh)***, ***[The Who](https://cutt.ly/FIPfJK5)***, ***[The Jam](https://cutt.ly/XIPglkh)***, ***[Madness](https://cutt.ly/CIPgCC3)***, and ***[The Smiths](https://cutt.ly/GIPg0k0)***. In the process, the group broke down the doors for a new generation of guitar bands that became labelled as *[britpop](https://cutt.ly/dIPg7M8)*.
Through some reinvention, ***Blur*** reclaimed their position as an art pop band in the late '90s by incorporating *indie rock* and *lo-fi* influences, which finally gave them their elusive American success in 1997.
But the band's legacy remained in Britain, where they helped revitalise *guitar pop* by skillfully updating the country's pop traditions.
> The songs on Blur’s third studio album, ***”Parklife”***, span many genres, such as the *synthpop*-influenced hit single ***["Girls & Boys"](https://cutt.ly/0IOcMjJ)***, the instrumental waltz interlude of ***["The Debt Collector"](https://cutt.ly/IIOvfhM)***, the punk rock-influenced ***["Bank Holiday"](https://cutt.ly/XIOc7zJ)***, the spacey, Syd Barrett-esque ***["Far Out"](https://cutt.ly/CIOvhyY)***, and the fairly new wave-influenced ***["Trouble in the Message Centre"](https://cutt.ly/kIOvcWw)***.
>
> The legions of jangly, melodic bands that followed in the wake of ***”Parklife”*** revealed how much more complex Blur's vision was. Not only was their music precisely detailed - sound effects and brilliant guitar lines pop up all over the record - but the melodies elegantly interweaved with the chords, as in the graceful, heartbreaking ["Badhead”](https://cutt.ly/BIOc6YE).

***"R.E.M."*** was an American rock band from ***[Athens, Georgia](https://cutt.ly/NmRkghQ)***, formed in 1980 by drummer ***[Bill Berry](https://cutt.ly/AmRklXQ)***, guitarist ***[Peter Buck](https://cutt.ly/ymRkcq5)***, bassist ***[Mike Mills](https://cutt.ly/CmRknrO)***, and lead vocalist ***[Michael Stipe](https://cutt.ly/lmRkQn5)***, who were students at the University of Georgia.
Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern.
While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, ***"R.E.M."*** brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. The band marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock, and inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom.
***”R.E.M.’s”*** fifth studio record, ***"Document"***was the first album by the band to be produced by ***[Scott Litt](https://cutt.ly/3mOnY5R)***. His producer’s touch gives the group a clean sound without sacrificing their enigmatic tendencies, which helped to move the band toward mainstream success.
Where ***”[Lifes Rich Pageant](https://cutt.ly/WmPIXWX)”*** sounded a bit like a party record, ***”Document”*** is a fiery statement, and its memorable melodies and riffs are made all the more indelible by its righteous anger.
In other words, it's not only a commercial breakthrough, but a creative breakthrough as well, offering evidence of ***”R.E.M.'s”*** growing depth and maturity, and helping usher in the P.C. era in the process.
***”Exhuming McCarthy”*** is the third song on the band’s fifth studio album ***"[Document](https://cutt.ly/zmPICOI)"***, released on August 31, 1987, last by ***”[I.R.S. Records](https://cutt.ly/rmRk1BH)”***.

***"The Auteurs"*** were a British alternative rock band of the 1990s, and a vehicle for songwriter ***[Luke Haines](https://cutt.ly/JncuRe6)*** (guitar, piano and vocals).
Formerly a member of ***"[The Servants](https://cutt.ly/LncuIc1)"***, Haines created the Auteurs with his then-girlfriend ***[Alice Readman](https://cutt.ly/LncuIc1)*** on bass guitar, former classmate ***[Glenn Collins](https://cutt.ly/AnciuAS)*** on drums, and later added ***[James Banbury](https://cutt.ly/nncisTw)*** on cello.
At the start of their career, ***”The Auteurs”*** became associated with the Britpop movement, however this association was not liked by ***Haines***, who frequently made derogatory remarks about his peers.
Frontman and the group's guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, wrote highly melodic pop songs that combined the airy melodies of ***[George Harrison](https://cutt.ly/encihWZ)*** with the cutting social observations of ***[Ray Davies](https://cutt.ly/OncikOl)***; they were sharp, intelligent songs, full of humor and gorgeous melancholy, even when loudly rocking.
With its disciplined guitar, piano and strained vocals, the group’s 1993 debut, ***"New Wave"***, is the place to start. Its dozen tracks capture Haines’ view of the hollowness of modern British life: the arrestingly lethargic single ***“Show Girl”***, the hypnotic ***“[How Could I Be Wrong](https://cutt.ly/tnURe5R)”*** and the catchy class warfare anthem ***“[Valet Parking](https://cutt.ly/lnUE5bF)”***.
Guest cellist ***James Banbury’s*** lithe dips and swoops adorn the songs like costume jewelry, while the sympathetic rhythm section (bassist ***Alice Readman*** and drummer ***Glenn Collins***) never over-asserts itself.
As ***[Paul Graham](https://cutt.ly/UnQvk09)*** wrote: *If this is not a five-star album, I guess I am at a loss at what is”*.

***"Stereolab"*** are an English-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990.
Led by the songwriting team of ***[Tim Gane](https://cutt.ly/BmFnRwl)*** (guitar and keyboards) and ***[Lætitia Sadie](https://cutt.ly/dmFnYuG)r***(vocals, keyboards and guitar), the group's music combines influences from *krautrock*, *lounge* and *1960s pop music*, often incorporating a repetitive motorik beat with heavy use of vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French.
Their lyrics have political and philosophical themes influenced by the ***[Surrealist](https://cutt.ly/imFnOlx)*** and ***[Situationist](https://cutt.ly/ymFnAt5)*** movements.
Although ***"Stereolab"*** found success in the underground music scene and were influential enough to spark a renewed interest in older analogue instruments, they have never had a significant commercial impact. Meaby the key is lost in the interview where ***Gane*** and ***Sadier*** have discussed their musical philosophy - *"to be unique for us was more important than to be good"*.
While the two years between ***"[Dots and Loops](https://cutt.ly/Mm9iHCw)"*** and ***"[Cobra](https://cutt.ly/bm9i2Wp)"*** resulted in stagnation, the two years separating ***"Cobra"*** and the band’s seventh album ***"Sound-Dust"*** find ***"Stereolab"*** deliberately recharging their creative juices, delving deeper into avant-garde composition and '60s swing pop in equal measures.
If it's taken on a pure sonic level, the album can often be quite pleasing and intriguing, especially the sophisticated horn and flute arrangements, which producer ***O'Rourke*** makes lushly alluring.
It's hard not to wish that the entire record was constructed simply of instrumentals of this sort, since that's when ***"Stereolab"*** sounds fully recharged and gorgeous. As it stands, the album is held back by their insistence on simple songs and simple vocals that keep the record earthbound and solely the province of the already converted.
***”Nothing to Do with Me”*** is the tenth song on the band's seventh studio album, ***"[Sound-Dust](https://cutt.ly/Bm9oray)"***, released on 28 August 2001 by ***"[Duophonic Records](https://cutt.ly/nmFZnnE)"*** and ***"[Elektra Records](https://cutt.ly/AmFZWIh)"***.
It was ***"Stereolab"*** last album to feature singer and guitarist ***[Mary Hansen](https://cutt.ly/bmBRfKp)***, who died in a biking accident the following year.
