“These days, Stoicism is very fashionable, and popular books on this subject are easy to find. Ludwig von Mises drew from a different tradition of Greek ethics, Epicureanism.”

“Sociology is in constant danger of thinking something is a law that is not a law. And economists frequently think that something is a hypothesis for the viable regularity when it is, in fact, a logically necessary truth. And Mises is a person who can set us right in all of this. and help us avoid these confusions that have invaded most of the social sciences.”

Jeff is traveling this weekend, but in light of Thursday night's shooting of police officers in Dallas, we decided to run a talk he gave two years ago entitled, "Whatever happened to Peace Officers?"
The growth of the state, the militarization of police forces, and the increase in violence both by and against officers are interrelated—but, as libertarians we should avoid the easy emotional cliches and sound-bite answers. We should be better than the left and right, who hijack every tragedy in service of their narrative.
Rodney King famously asked, "Why can't we all just get along?" It starts with dialing back state power.

Ryan McMaken joins the show for a lengthy discussion of Rothbard's brief but devastating essay Anatomy of the State. This book demands that readers understand the stark nature of government, without fairy tales or niceties. It applies the same lens to public and private criminality. It challenges every myth surrounding politics and statecraft, ranging from "the government is us" to judicial review. It explains how the state maintains legitimacy, how it expands, how it deals with other states, and ultimately how it works to prevent domestic threats to its power. And it still serves as the baseline analysis for understanding state power, nearly 50 years after Rothbard helped create a burgeoning anarcho-capitalist movement. Anatomy of the State is a book that everyone, from anarchist to statist, needs to read and consider.

This episode features a talk Chris Calton gave to Auburn’s Young Americans for Liberty on April 20, as part of the "Reclamation of Liberties" event (see Mises.org/YAL2019). In the talk, Chris offers an overview of the history of the governmental efforts to stigmatize marijuana in order to justify criminalization and draconian enforcement policies. He traces the changing narrative and strategies for propaganda to illustrate the evolution of propaganda over time, providing insight into how the government and media work together to shape public perception.

As the fear of spies and traitors spread through the North, political arrests became commonplace, even in states as far north as Maine. Anybody expressing any anti-war sentiment would be assumed to be a traitor and a secessionist, and arrests were carried out according to a guilty-until-proven-innocent policy. Martial Law was not confined to the slave states.
Chris Calton recounts the controversial history of the Civil War. This is the 23rd episode in the third season of Historical Controversies. You may support this podcast financially at Mises.org/SupportHC.
