In John 13 our Lord says, I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. God commends service. Our Lord sets us an example… of a good servant.
Service and serving occurs over 1600 times in the Bible. As soon as God made man he gave him a job to do: Genesis 2:15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
If you are a good servant you will…
1. TAKE NOTICE
The Lord saw a need. It may have been just a little thing. But He saw it. It was something that needed doing. Do we see what needs doing?
Are we thoughtful about the interests of others – or just our own? Philippians 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Are you ready to serve? We are exhorted, “…to be ready to every good work” (Titus 3:1).
Matthew 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Please the master
Honour the master
Obey the master
Follow the master
…Even in the little things, the insignificant things of life…
Let us also
2. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
The Lord not only saw a need…
• He did something about it.
• He did not call another to do the task.
• He took the responsibility upon Himself.
Are we like Him? Do we have His mind?
• That we would not consider reputation or esteem of men?
• That we would shun our pride and position and take a humble place?
How is your attitude towards service? Do you serve as unto the Lord? Do we serve as Christ did, out of love and humility… He took it upon Himself…
Will you take responsibility?
One of the big things, I think, as a servant of God - is that we represent the master. We act on behalf of our master. We speak in His stead, in His place. We stand for Him, for His sake, on behalf of Him, as His ambassador.
It can be easy to get distracted by splinter issues. They are still issues. But it’s how we address them that matters. I try to have a Christ-like bias in what I do and say. I try to address things as he would do, as a shepherd would guide sheep, not harshly but gently.

3. TAKE ACTION
Our Lord took action - personally. He did not look around Him to find the servant of the home that had failed in his duty…
He laid aside His garments. He washed the disciples' feet. He served.
Some people remind us of blisters - they don’t show up until the work is done.
Work is honourable. Do you serve Him with quality and faithfulness; with your whole heart? Ephesians 6:7 With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
Notice with our Lord, the humility of service. Let us not shy away from humble work - whether it be even doing the dishes, cleaning toilets, whatever... God commends Humility. True servants are those willing to undertake work which means menial duties: humble, lowly tasks.
Some people say I’m willing to be a servant, just don’t treat me like one. Yet, here is true greatness; as Christ, washing the disciples' feet. Be faithful. Don’t expect thanks. Just serve willingly. Romans 12:11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.
A good servant is ready to serve, to obey. They are there for the will and work of their master. They do not live for their own wants - or according to their own timetable. What is important is what the master wants.
Do we follow the Master’s orders, and do His will? As God’s servants we are to serve willingly.
God calls the ordinary to serve Him… The Lord just wants a willing heart. He is at work in us… and through us…
Our master deserves our service. So - be a servant.
A Servant is one who dedicates himself to the service of another by his own choice. It is a repeated theme in the Bible:
• Joshua - Servant of Moses
• Elisha - Servant of Elijah
• Gehazi - Servant of Elishah
• Apostles - Servants of Christ
Our Lord served with the absolute commitment - of giving his very life… Are we committed to serving Him? Who we serve shows Who our master is. Our service to God is like an act of worship. It is due Him.
“Half the trouble with the church today was that the members thought that they were merely passengers on the Gospel ship instead of understanding that they constituted the crew”.
Be willing to serve. William Booth: The greatness of a man’s power is his measure of surrender.
Take action. Opportunity is now. “It is a solemn thing to say ‘Tomorrow’ when God says ‘Today’, because man’s tomorrow and God’s today never meet.”
Do what you can, where you are, with what you have. Serve now.

Philippians 3:8-11

(10) That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; (11) If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
Paul tells of the excellency of the knowledge of Jesus Christ my Lord… To know Him is great cause for rejoicing. We can personally know Him.
God is incomprehensible - and yet He is knowable.
To know God is to know eternal life.
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
We are invited into His fellowship. It’s called the fellowship of His sufferings.
To Know Him and the the fellowship of his sufferings
• Consider His sufferings
• The pathway to Calvary
• Share in His pain
Believers can count it a privilege to be reproached and reviled as Christ was.
As believers we have the privilege to be made just like him, not only in glory, but in trial.
It may mean bearing a cross that is laid upon us…
• Walking in His steps
• Taking sufferings for His sake
• Giving way to Him and taking a difficult path
• Denying self.
2 Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
2. HIS DEATH
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
In a spiritual sense we are… To conform…
• To calvary
• To the crucified life
• To surrender
• To sacrifice
• To put to death the old sin nature
• To live a life dedicated to go to the furthest extent of love and compassion and purpose.
We’ve seen our sweet communion with His suffering… a fellowship with Him, our blessed redeemer.
Our conforming to His death and our living a life dead to sin…
And also, on a brighter note, to KNOW HIM means… to experience…
…the power of his resurrection…
The women with sorrowful tred make their way to the tomb… When - Suddenly - an angel interrupts and announces…
Matthew 28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
He is alive! Raised to life!
It’s Glory! It’s Victory…
• over sin
• over death
New life has begun!
We have sure hope. Glad hope.
A certain assurance.
It says, 2 Timothy 1:10 …our Saviour Jesus Christ… hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
1 Corinthians 15:55-57 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? (56) The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
He helps us…
• To walk in newness of Life
• To be raised up spiritually with Him
• To be identified with Him.
God’s Spirit’s power raises believers from spiritual death now.

When he shall appear, we shall be LIKE HIM. His life was a life of love, truth and grace. His teaching was lived out, in real life. And He is our model.
1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he WALKED. He was sensitive to needs. He served. He was full of forgiveness and love. To be Christ-like means that we are to live like stars in a dark world. Live your life to the glory of God. Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. From man’s creation in Genesis 1… man was created in the likeness of God. It's God’s plan.
Place your feet into His footprints… As He met with people, the lepers, the prostitutes, the rejects, the outcasts… He showed grace and love - touching the lives of so many. He gave compassion and care. He was filled with compassion as He stood by the grieving.
What would Jesus do, if He visited our world? Who would He reach out to? The battered and torn. The abused. The rejects. The hurting. He would hear them. He would stoop down and care. Touch the hurting ones. Be like Him.
HE IS PURE. (V. 3) And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is PURE.
God wants to clean up His church. You’re going to want to be ready. A Christian is going to purify himself. James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
HE IS SINLESS (V. 5) …in him is no sin. He was manifested to take away our sins. Be filled with Jesus and there will be no place left for sin… Instead of being filled with sin… We can be filled with Jesus… We can know a Christ centredness. To live IS Christ… Avoid sin. Run from it. Like Joseph. Be true, like Daniel. Honour your Lord. Don’t let sin reign – or rule – in your bodies. INSTEAD let Christ rule. Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
A Christian is to let God deal with his sin problem. (V. 6) Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not. Abide in Christ... stay put. 1 John 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth (abideth) in him, and he in God. If you are a Christian, Christ sets up home in your heart… The previous occupant, Mr or Ms Sin has moved out. Let Christ rule and reign - as the new king over your life.

I present a fishing lesson. The Lord Jesus calls us to be fishers of men.
For us to go fishing we have to leave the shore. Be willing to step off the beach. Get out there. Put yourself out. Leave the shore hugging Christianity.
The Lord urges: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. Steer for the deep waters. The fish are out there.
Your mission field starts at the doorstep of your home. Are we willing to leave the comfortable place? And make some sacrifice.
“Some want to live within the sound of church or chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell.” Can we reach the lost ones of this city of Adelaide?
"The only thing the majority of Christians in the West know of Sacrifice is how to spell it."
Get out as a fisher of men – into the deep waters. The challenging waters.
Also, let us get the net out and get in the fish. Obey - and expect God to work, as you witness. Trust Him to work.
Peter was dog tired. He had been up all night, working without any results. He said, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
Be a witness. Open your mouth and be used of God to give the Gospel.
Leave the comforts of land – into the deep.
And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. Missions is a team effort.
The Bible urges us: Philippians 1:27 “...that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.”
Peter forsook all and followed the Lord. Let’s set on a course into the deep waters, trusting God to steer as the pilot and captain of our vessel.
As a church, as churches, let us get out there. Let us leave the comfort zone. Be obedient to the Master’s call. Go out and fish.
I urge you to check your hearing, spiritually… Do we hear the Word of the Lord? The call?
Acts 16:9-10 …a vision appeared to Paul in the night; there stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.
Their cries are ringing still. “Come over… and help us”. The need was urgent, pressing. It’s easy to say, let someone else answer the call…
Paul had to put himself out. It meant travel, and trials; prison and privation, for Christ. What about us? Will we put ourselves out? Launch out, into the deep? Are we willing to be a living sacrifice? To put our lives on the line?
To put our own desires aside? To give up our own wants and comforts, that another can be reached? To give and keep on giving? How much are we willing to help? Be big hearted.
Immediately we endeavoured to go… gathering that the Lord had called us.
Paul could see it was God calling them, through the voice of the crying one… God was speaking to them and they sensed the very call of God Himself.
Will we step up to serve in the place of need, or will we be a Jonah? Will we pick and choose what need we will respond to? Or will we just step forward, and get the job done? Will we be a servant, or will we choose to please ourselves?
Will it be that we will wait? Maybe till it is perhaps more convenient? More comfortable? How long will we wait? Maybe we will wait so long that it is, sadly, too late… Or will we act immediately? Promptly? Instantly?
Come over and help us. Can’t you hear them? Their desperate cry… Paul heard the cry, and responded, immediately.
Can you hear the Macedonians today? Will we reach to the people “beyond”…Outside of our comfort zone… Outside of our circle… Will we step outside and reach out…? Dare to venture out, to launch out, into the deep…
There’s some Macedonians calling out across the way, even across our own city. Crying out for help… Can’t you see them? …Hear their urging, their desperation.
Will you heed their call? Will you hear God’s voice, that still, small voice? His call. He’s sending you. As He urges you to Go… Will you obey His commission, as He sends and sends and sends… Yet more are needed.
The harvest is great… Pray ye therefore the Lord of the Harvest… He is the Lord of the Harvest still. And labourers are needed, still…
One thing about God’s call to mission… Notice what He says: Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Notice – it says: Start in Jerusalem. Start now, right where you are. Start preparing. Your mission training starts right here, right now. In your Jerusalem. The mission starts at the church doorstep.

Society is more and more fatherless. Fatherlessness is behind many of the woes of our world.
The Bible tells of God as Our Father… The heart of Christianity is “knowing God as Father.”
God is our Father by choice. Not everyone knows God as Father. We can enter His family by “adoption” – He grants us all the rights and privileges of being His child.
Christ, in addressing God the Father, used the Aramaic word, “Abba” – a term of security and intimacy. It’s literally, daddy or papa.
We are chosen – adopted – into a wonderful relationship – we can have intimacy and closeness.
Our Father cares for us. Matthew 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
When a newborn baby is born into the world, he is totally dependent and helpless.
We see God’s gracious tenderness and His warmth towards us. He is tender, and caring. He deserves our love, and trust.
He guides and provides.
God our Father is the source of every blessing. James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights…
The blessing of salvation comes to us from the Father, the one whose plan was carried out at the cross.
Our Father is generous in His supply.
God gives us His protection. Psalms 68:5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.
Psalms 34:7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. You can depend on Him and His care. He’s always got time to be with you.
God, as Father, provides us with His direction. Some families are like rudderless ships.
Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. It’s the ones who the Lord loves that He chastens…
Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The Father corrects and trains His children.
God loves you. You are worth something to Him. It is wonderful to know that God is our Father, now and forever.
He is a Father who loves us and delights in us! Psalm 103:13 says, Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
God has compassion on those who fear Him, as a father has compassion on his children.
God is full of compassion for us.
1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God…
How great is God's love!
How did God demonstrate that love? At the cross. In Romans 8:32 we read, He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
This is love - immeasurable - and beyond all comprehension.
God is a loving and forgiving Father. He is gentle and patient.
Luke 15:20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
He is rich in His mercy and His great kindness toward us.
He sets His affection upon us.
Prayer is talking to daddy. It is talking and listening to God, our Heavenly Father, our Daddy in Heaven. Our Father wants to keep contact with us. He shows His love as He protects and comforts us.
God’s love is unconditional, undeserved. As an extra blessing, we are a family of brothers and sisters. We are called to show brotherly love to each other – to accept and support each other.
It takes God to make a home. We can trust Him.
Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.
The Father wants fellowship with you. He wants you to be with Him. It’s a close relationship.
He wants to communicate with you, by His Word, and for you to communicate with Him, by prayer.
We are meant to honour our father… Malachi 1:6 A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts…
As the saying goes, “Like father, like (what?)” The Bible says we should clothe ourselves with Christ. We should have a striking family resemblance to our Father.
Do we make our “Dad” proud? Are we acting like we’re a son or daughter of God?
Our Lord said, Luke 2:49 “…I must be about my Father's business…” What is the Father’s business today? It could include helping the helpless, being peacemakers, soul-winning, keeping unspotted from the world. Are you about the Father’s business? How can we live in alignment to His will?
