The Nibelungenlied is a medieval heroic epic and was often referred to as the “national epic of the Germans”. It was created at the beginning of the 13th century and was written in the then popular language of Middle High German. The epic tells of the love between the dragon slayer Siegfried and the Burgundian princess Kriemhild, of the Burgundian King Gunther's courtship of the Icelandic Queen Brunhild, of the Burgundians' betrayal of Siegfried and his murder by Hagen. Later, the setting of the action is the land of the Huns under King Etzel, whom Kriemhild married for the second time. Kriemhild uses her new position to avenge Siegfried's death on Hagen and all Burgundians with the help of the Huns. Karl Joseph Simrock's translation is one of the best-known translations of the old text into the New High German language.
