Excerpts: St. Elmo's Fire
This short excerpt from our Magellan-Elcano world circumnavigation video discusses a commonly observed natural phenomenon called St. Elmo’s Fire, that has been recorded by sailors since ancient times. It relates to the build up of an electrical charge around the tops of masts during storms, in which a bluish purple glow – called a coronal discharge is emitted from the object, much as popular plasma balls do today. Robert FitzRoy was the Captain of the Beagle, due to set out on an important voyage to test the latest Navy Chronometer and accurately locate the longitude of important ports around the globe. Prone to chronic depression, he put out a request for a suitably qualified gentleman to come along and keep him company during the long and arduous voyage. A restless young Charles Darwin was invited to join him and the rest is history. The collection of bio-geological specimens was a welcome intellectual distraction for both crew and passengers, and was quite the team effort. Darwin's later failure to acknowledge the contribution of FitzRoy and his crew in both the tasks of collecting as well as formulating his theories sewed the seeds for later animosity towards him. Pemulwuy was a member of the Bidgigal Clan, of the Eora nation that inhabit the Sydney Basin on the East Coast of Australia. When Arthur Phillip arrived in Kamay (Botany Bay) with the First Fleet in 1788, to establish a convict settlement, tensions soon arose between the British and the Aboriginal clans that inhabited the area. Under pressure from expanding settlers, the Aboriginal people found a champion in Pemulwuy, a Carradhy (Cleverman), whose hit-and-run tactics unified a number of independent tribes in the region and put serious pressure on colonial food reserves and security. His relentless campaign lasted 12 years, and during that time he gained legendary status among his people, and the respect of his enemies, such that today he has become a worthy hero to Australians of all backgrounds.

St. Margaret of Antioch (aka. St. Marina), was a 4th Century virgin martyr, venerated throughout the Christian world as an ideal of womanly virtue, personal sacrifice and faith. She was said to have been swallowed by a demon monster who regurgitated her out, being unable to bear her holiness. In later centuries her image and veneration became intertwined with that of St. Margaret of Scotland, an English princess who became the mother of four kings of Scotland. St Margaret, along with St Catherine and St. Michael were the three saints whose visions drove Joan of Arc to restore the rightful French King to the throne and expel the English from France. May 2021 marks the bicentenary of the death of French Emperor and ethnic Corsican, Napoleon Bonaparte. A military and political genius and champion of the French Revolution, he has been much maligned by history as a dictator, and precursor for Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini and other modern despots by victorious British, Bourbon and other European monarchies. Napoleon's achievements both on and off the battlefield changed the course of world history and ultimately, drove the reforms and changes that were to improve the quality of life and futures of countless nameless peasants and disenfranchised people across Europe and the New World. And yet, he is continuously described as "controversial", racist, misogynist and an evil megalomaniac by biased historians viewing his life from their own narrow perspectives and political agendas.

It was to have a profound effect on the young man, and influence the course of his psychology for the rest of his life.
