A short excerpt from our two-part video on Jose de San Martin: “Libertador”, which looks at the revolutionary war of independence in Post Napoleonic colonial Latin America. San Martin was born in modern Argentina, then part of a large region called the “United Provinces”, which at first pushed for greater autonomy for its people, but with the installation of hard line autocratic government back in Spain, a revolution broke out that spread all across the continent of South America. San Martin was a highly decorated general whose creative tactics and humane treatment of soldiers earned him the respect of both friends and enemies. His singular greatest achievement was crossing the Andean Alps with his army, to liberate Chile and Peru – a feat thought to be impossible, and for which he is revered in his homeland.
